A Global Mind Is A Nurtured Mind: The Demand To Consider And Cure The Deprivation Of Multicultural Education, Amber D'Ambrosia Dec 2017

A Global Mind Is A Nurtured Mind: The Demand To Consider And Cure The Deprivation Of Multicultural Education, Amber D'Ambrosia

Education and Human Development Master's Theses

The leaders of tomorrow are the bright and knowledgeable students of today. The problem with how these students are being prepared for their role as future leaders stems from the lack of diversity in literature, and the overall lack of multicultural education in American public schools. The dominant narratives being published, circulated, and studied in schools do not appropriately reflect, nor appropriately engage the multifaceted population of students accessing the discourse. The United States must no longer be notorious for its belief in its own cultural and historical superiority, but instead should begin making strides toward evolving the educational experiences ...

A Curriculum Project On Exponential Growth Aligned With Common Core Standards, Alyssa D. Ruscio Jan 2015

A Curriculum Project On Exponential Growth Aligned With Common Core Standards, Alyssa D. Ruscio

Education and Human Development Master's Theses

In the world of education, teacher expectations and educational policies are continually changing at the state and national levels. For this reason, it is essential that teachers have access to appropriate materials which help them adapt their teaching practices so that students can have meaningful learning opportunities based on the current mandates.

This curriculum project includes a Common Core based unit focusing on Exponential Growth. This curriculum is designed to address mathematical practices one through six, as well as the high school – modeling and high school – algebra standards for mathematical content. The emphasis of this unit is designed to allow ...

A Mathematics Curriculum Study In Trigonometric Graphs To Align With The Common Core Standards, Julie M. Howell Apr 2014

A Mathematics Curriculum Study In Trigonometric Graphs To Align With The Common Core Standards, Julie M. Howell

Education and Human Development Master's Theses

The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) were written by The National Governors Association (NGA), in collaboration with the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) in 2010, and was adopted by 45 states in an attempt to nationalize the United States curriculum in English and mathematics. Now it is up to the states to implement new curriculum to align to these standards. In the third year of high school mathematics, students are introduced to radian measures and trigonometric functions, and these abstract mathematical topics can be difficult for them to learn. The lesson plans contained within this curriculum project are ...

A Curriculum Project On Connecting Patterns And Equations In Algebra 1 Aligned With The New York State Common Core Standards, Kristina R. Graziadei Dec 2013

A Curriculum Project On Connecting Patterns And Equations In Algebra 1 Aligned With The New York State Common Core Standards, Kristina R. Graziadei

Education and Human Development Master's Theses

Introduction

Change is constant in the world of education. Teacher requirements and education policies are constantly evolving at a statewide and nationwide level, and it is critical that teachers adapt to these changes for successful classroom learning experiences. Through implementing new technologies in the classroom teachers may elevate students understanding, provide deeper meaning in content, and make connections to real life applications. Recent studies show that implementing technology and modeling strategies in the classroom have the potential to evoke a higher level of understanding among all students (NYSED, 2012).

This curriculum project aligned the Algebra 1: Unit 1- Connecting Patterns ...

A Curriculum Project On Quadratics Aligned To The Common Core State Standards, Donovan J. Daily Oct 2012

A Curriculum Project On Quadratics Aligned To The Common Core State Standards, Donovan J. Daily

Education and Human Development Master's Theses

This project illustrates a process of designing curriculum for the study of quadratics in Algebra 1, in alignment with the Common Core State Standards in mathematics. The process incorporates the body of research on student conceptions of quadratics and available techniques and technologies for the enhancement of student conceptions. The Algebra 1 course trajectory recommended by the Common Core is analyzed in light of the existing research, unpacked into learning objectives, and restructured to address key conceptual roadblocks synthesized from the research. The resulting curriculum capitalizes on technology, rich problem contexts, and students’ prior knowledge of linear relationships in order ...

A Holistic Comparison Of The Writing Abilities Of First-Grade Students Who Attended Either Full-Day Or Half-Day Kindergarten, Kirsten Carey Aug 1996

A Holistic Comparison Of The Writing Abilities Of First-Grade Students Who Attended Either Full-Day Or Half-Day Kindergarten, Kirsten Carey

Education and Human Development Master's Theses

Limited research has been conducted to compare full-day and half-day kindergarten programs. Most studies examined reading and math achievement. Standardized tests were generally used to measure achievement. Virtually no studies have been conducted to assess and compare writing proficiency of full-day and half-day students.

The purpose of this study was to determine the difference in the writing scores of first grade students who attended either a full-day or half-day kindergarten program the previous year. Holistic scoring was used in keeping with the need for authentic assessment.

The writings of 65 first-grade students from two rural school districts were examined and ...
