The purpose of this study was to determine if there is a statistically significant correlation between sixth grade students' attitudes toward reading and their standardized test scores. More specifically, the area in question was whether a significant relationship existed between how well students scored on an exam and how much they enjoyed reading. The subjects consisted of 75 sixth graders who had not repeated the grade nor were in Special Education. The purpose of this study was to examine the evaluated elements of an adequate early intervention reading program for bilingual (Spanish/English-speaking) and monolingual (English-speaking) students, as viewed by their first or second grade, bilingual or monolingual teacher. Fifteen bilingual and fifteen monolingual, first and second grade teachers (N=30) from three area urban school districts constituted the subjects of this study. How does Reading Recovery program effect the ability and attitudes of the participating students? In this explanatory study, eight students, participating in an intervention program modeled after Reading Recovery, were examined based on skills and attitudes. All but one student showed marked improvement in attitude toward reading and writing by the end of the study. The purpose of this study was three fold. First examined was how reading abilities are identified in typical third grade classrooms. Secondly, approaches, strategies, and instruments classroom teachers, remedial reading specialist, and special education teachers (reading facilitators) use to support growth were investigated. Finally, school districts were compared with each other. Forty-six third grade reading facilitators were surveyed with a researcher-made instrument that included eighty-five items and four open-ended questions. This study attempted to determine whether there was a significant correlation between the letter recognition ability of kindergarten students and their risk-taking characteristics in the classroom. To achieve this purpose, letter recognition scores from November report cards were used, along with teacher input regarding risk-taking behaviors. The purpose of this study was to identify the principles and practices currently implemented in providing reading instruction in kindergarten through grade five in the Fairport Central School District. The subjects in this study included 149 elementary classroom teachers and 11 elementary reading teachers from the four elementary school buildings in the Fairport Central School District. During the 1995-1997 school years, 35 students were identified at Holmes Road School (in Greece, NY) as being in the lowest 20% of their peer group in reading and related skills during first or second grade. These students received 12-16 weeks of individualized, one-on-one, reading instruction in a program similar to Reading Recovery called the Reading Intervention Program (RIP).
