This study compared attitudes of elementary school teachers and secondary school teachers on cursive handwriting. The investigation included secondary and elementary teacher requirements of cursive handwriting and special education students’ requirement of cursive handwriting. The subjects were educators from a middle sized urban school district in Niagara County in upstate New York. The results of the study came from a researcher prepared questionnaire. The research found secondary and elementary school teachers to have similar attitudes regarding cursive handwriting being a necessity for the upcoming century. The purpose of this study was to compare the entering and exiting self-perceptions as readers of students participating in a Reading Recovery program. The subjects, eight first graders, attended school in Ontario or Batavia, New York. The students were referred to the Reading Recovery program by their classroom teachers and were considered to be in the lowest twenty percent of their class.

In this study, twenty parents of children with learning disabilities were surveyed to discover their attitudes toward education. The subjects were selected from those eligible and those attending a voluntary support group for parents of children with learning disabilities. It was discovered that parents react differently to the initial diagnosis of a learning disability. The data showed parents felt comfortable discussing their children's progress with school officials and were willing to advocate for their children whenever necessary. The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of children’s literature on moral growth in 3rd grade students. Twenty-eight 3rd graders from a suburban western New York school were examined, including 11 boys and 17 girls ages 8-9. The researcher uses a student survey to gauge initial student opinions/attitudes about honesty and respect. Students then undergo an 11 day classroom program in which they focus on those values through children’s literature. The purpose of this study was to discover the attitudes, behaviors and interests of fifth grade students concerning leisure time reading.

The subjects consisted of nine focus groups of five students each (n=45) selected from fifth grade classes within Monroe County school districts. The schools were stratified by location including urban, suburban, and rural environments. Student selection was made by classroom teachers based on a variety of reading abilities and gender. Focus groups were interviewed regarding their leisure time reading habits, interests and behaviors. Group responses were then analyzed qualitatively and grouped into various categories.
