The purpose of this study was to examine the ability of first grade children to generate verbal associations to both neutral and emotional stimuli and to determine if this ability is significantly related to reading achievement.

Word associations are one element of oral expressive language which has been studied in its relationship to reading. Studies to date have only begun to examine the many different aspects of word associations and the relationship that they have to such things as beginning reading, reading comprehension, sight vocabulary acquisition and reading rate.

The purpose of this study was to determine if the creative thinking skills of third and fourth grade students could be enhanced by the use of selected teaching strategies designed to stimulate fluency, flexibility, originality and elaboration. This study investigated the effectiveness of instructing poor readers using the cloze procedure. The primary purpose was to determine whether significant differences in reading comprehension grade equivalent scores occurred between the treatment and control groups on a standardized reading achievement test. Five subskills of comprehension measured by this test were identified and analyzed to determine which subskill areas were affected by the use of cloze. A secondary purpose was to determine whether poor readers increased in ability to comprehend cloze material at their instructional level.

A randomized, two treatment, control group posttest design was used for the study. This study was unique in that simple line drawings were designated picture types and the Bormuth standard cloze procedure was used to measure comprehension.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of specific study strategy training as a method of improving self-study spelling strategies of average fourth graders.

Forty-four fourth graders comprised the treatment and control groups. Two fifteen word banks were constructed to serve as pre and posttests. The purpose of this study was to determine if bibliotherapy is an effective means of improving the reading attitudes of learning disabled children. The sample consisted of nineteen children, ages nine to thirteen years old, designated as learning disabled according to federal guidelines. The primary purpose of this research was to investigate the differential effects of visual (graphic) and auditory (phonetic) information in accessing meanings of derived words which are variant at the surface phonetic level, but retain in their orthography a relationship to the deeper lexical level. These effects were examined developmentally at the third and fifth grade levels using a researcher-designed multiple-choice test. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship of four socio-educational factors (sex of teachers, race of teachers, geographic location of schools, and degree of mobility during schooling) and the current attitudes toward reading of fifty young, urban Black adults. This research was designed to assess the effectiveness of a school screening program for scoliosis among 294 sixth grade students in the Rochester City School District during the 1978-1979 school year. Data was collected regarding sex, ethnicity, age, follow up status, diagnosis, and treatment of the referred.

More females (172) were referred than males (122). Whites comprised half of the study (135), with Blacks (128) next, followed by Spanish (25), and Orientals (6), respectively.
