Rethinking Metacognitive Intervention: A Scaffolded Exam Wrapper Strategy, Aaron Ridall Dec 2018

Rethinking Metacognitive Intervention: A Scaffolded Exam Wrapper Strategy, Aaron Ridall

Education and Human Development Master's Theses

Students lack the behaviors and strategies that support success in postsecondary environments, which has led one-third of all college students to enroll in remedial courses (Bowen, Chingos, & McPherson, 2009). One particular executive function that low-achieving students are often without is metacognition, or thinking about thinking. Traditional models of education in the United States do not teach students how to analyze their performance even though metacognition is linked to improved academic performance (Young & Fry, 2008). This work presents a scaffolded metacognitive strategy to help low-achieving students improve their metacognitive skillfulness and examination performance.

Through two data sets, this study uses a convenience sampling of 22 middle school teachers to analyze their perceptions on the ways in which they believe ...

Direct mathematical modelling and application can support students comprehension of the relationship between financial literacy and algebra. This curriculum highlights the ideology of the need to know drives learning and aligns real world financial literacy problems to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) algebra standards.

Ethnocentrism And Off Reservation Indian Boarding Schools, Nicholas C. Davidson Aug 2014

Ethnocentrism And Off Reservation Indian Boarding Schools, Nicholas C. Davidson

Education and Human Development Master's Theses

Ethnocentrism is a force to be reckoned with. The idea that one’s culture is morally and intellectually superior to another is a concept that has followed expanding civilizations for ages. The saga of the United States is no different. A society in a stage of expansion may think from a place of grandeur, and apply their cultural values to conquered people. This research will focus on three categories that will illustrate a holistic mindset of ethnocentrism from the point of view of the expanding United States to the original inhabitants of the continent. First, an exploration of federal government ...

The Effectiveness Of A Comprehensive Anti-Bullying Program In Reducing Reported Bullying Behaviors, Lindsay Wold Lazenby

Education and Human Development Master's Theses

Adolescence is characterized as a time of great personal upheaval wherein children experience significant physical, emotional, and social changes. As they begin to seek peer approval or try to resist peer rejection, many adolescents will do almost anything to fit in with a group, even if that means remaining silent as their peers are bullied. This research project discusses the ongoing battle to reclaim the academic landscape of American schools from various types of bullying behaviors by the use of school-wide, comprehensive anti-bullying initiatives. It highlights the impact a national anti-bullying program can have on the school environment and student ...
