The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of a social skills training program designed to improve the social status of isolated and rejected children. Subjects were fourth and fifth grade students from two different elementary schools. One school served as the control group and the other one was the experimental group.;The sample consisted of 91 identified students from both schools. A nonequivalent control group research design was used. Pre- and posttest information was gathered using the Piers-Harris Self-Perception Questionnaire, Achenbach's Teacher's Report Form, and Sociogram. The purpose of this study was to determine if there are differences in the regulation of sad affect between depressed and nondepressed adolescents and between younger (12 years to 15 years, 6 months) and older adolescents (15 years, 7 months to 18 years). Using an information processing perspective, this study focused on several steps involved in emotion regulation including the generation, evaluation, and reported use of coping strategies.;Participants included 38 male students, 12 to 18 years of age, attending public middle and high schools in Chesapeake, Virginia. The purpose of this historical study was to evaluate the consequences that the politically-determined conventions of academic freedom in Germany and in the United States had on the careers of four elite scientists before and after their emigration resulting from the threats of Nazism. This problem consisted of three distinct conceptual parts: (1) academic freedom, as a concept, (2) the political conventions of academic freedom within pre-World War II Germany and within pre- and World War II America, and (3) the effect that these definitions had on the careers of Albert Einstein, James Franck, Otto Meyerhof, and Otto Stern. Old Dominion University's Peninsula Center, in Hampton, Virginia, was the location for an ethnographic case study about the urban "distributed university" centers that provided instruction via video teleconference (VTC). Graduate engineers attended VTC classes at the Peninsula Center originating from five Virginia universities as part of the Commonwealth Graduate Engineering Program.;The purpose of this study was to describe VTC instruction and identify aspects that impacted on student learning, faculty teaching, and the socio-cultural environment. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship among prolonged teacher stress (or burnout), teachers' perceptions of leadership style adaptability, and teacher irrational belief systems.;The York County School Division was chosen because of the relative availability of subjects. Three surveys measuring teachers' perceptions of leadership style and style adaptability, teachers' irrational belief systems, and prolonged teacher stress, were disseminated among elementary classroom teachers in the county. Out of 100 elementary school teachers surveyed, there were 71 responses.;Three dimensions of burnout were measured: Emotional Exhaustion, Depersonalization, and Personal Accomplishment. The major purposes of this study were to describe the recruitment practices of the public school divisions in Virginia and to examine the relationship between recruitment sources used in Chesapeake Public Schools and four measures of personnel effectiveness (retention rates, job performance, job satisfaction, and attendance of teachers). Data were collected using three questionnaires designed for the study, the Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire, and archival records maintained by Chesapeake Public Schools. The number of students with disruptive behaviors in the public school classroom has become an area of increasing concern for educators. Using period newspapers and books, mercantile correspondence, Spanish imperial archives, and the colonial records of the Caracas City Council, Consulado, and Venezuelan Intendancy, this dissertation highlights the enterprises of those who profited from sustaining the Spanish Empire in its frail and debilitated state. Whether they had prospered from or merely survived the commercial revolutions that shook the Atlantic World after 1789, all merchants and traders calculated the economic consequences of South American independence and encouraged their contemporaries to do so too.

The intent of this study was to explore constituent utilization of power and authority over time that led to systemic dysfunctions in the governance of intercollegiate athletics, and to examine the needs motivating the interested constituents, thus suggesting alternatives for reform. This study focused on secondary school counselors employed in public schools in the state of Virginia. It investigated the direction and strength of the relationship of level of moral development, locus of control, HIV knowledge and HIV attitudes.;Locus of control was measured by Rotter's Internal-External Locus of Control Scale (I-E Scale). The Defining Issues Test (DIT) was used to assess counselor level of moral development. An HIV questionnaire examined counselor attitudes and knowledge. In the field of education, instructional leaders must know the regulations governing the assessment, curriculum, and instruction of all students. An area of special concern is the regulations governing programs for students with disabilities. The purpose of this study was to examine the degree of success or failure of three Virginia community colleges to establish viable educational foundations and to identify the characteristics enabling them to do so.;Studying Virginia community colleges provided an opportunity to observe fund-raising efforts made in the state where government appropriations decreased the most (during the period 1990-94) and, therefore, had the greatest potential effect. Three colleges with distinctly different geographical locations might shed light on the impact of cultural/social/economic factors on philanthropy; and three institutions of differing sizes (small, medium, and large) might address an economic environment in which …
