An Analysis Of Selected Factors Related To Predicting The Academic Success Of Black Students Attending Predominantly White Colleges, John Hair

Dissertations

In this study an analysis was conducted of the ways in which selected cognitive and demographic factors predicted whether black students were academically successful at a predominantly white (a) two year private business college, (b) two year public community college, and (c) public undergraduate/graduate university. The academic achievement of 266 black students enrolled between the fall terms of 1983-84 and 1984-85 were analyzed using analysis of variance techniques. The dependent variable was cumulative college GPA and the independent variables were (a) high school GPA, (b) college assessment tests, (c) sex, (d) type of curriculum enrolled in, (e) remedial course(s) taken, …

Gender And Assumptions Underpinning Research Among Doctoral Students, Eileen F. Stryker Dec 1986

Gender And Assumptions Underpinning Research Among Doctoral Students, Eileen F. Stryker

Dissertations

The doctoral experiences of women and men are distinguishable and different. Studies of these differences have not considered the relationship of gender to the content of the curriculum. Learning to conduct scientific research is central to doctoral study. Widely held notions of what constitutes legitimate science are challenged by those who study the relationship between gender and science. They suggest that the predominant view of science is based on a set of ontological and epistemological assumptions which are incompatible with women's experiences. Empirical studies in the psychology of science suggest that assumptions underpinning research are associated with gender and with …

The Influences Of Schooling, Job Experience, Information About Job Openings, Mentoring, Geographic Mobility, And Discrimination On The Selection Of College And University Presidents, Raymond D. Davis

Dissertations

The study was designed around an occupational-distribution model developed by Milner (1979) and adapted for the present study to include the factors: (a) years of schooling, (b) quality of education, (c) job experience, (d) information about openings and promotions, (e) geographical regions, and (f) deliberate discrimination. Twenty-five hypotheses, thought to be related to the adapted model, were developed and tested. A particular goal was to examine possible screening factors that may limit women and members of racial minority groups in securing higher education presidencies.

A survey questionnaire, mailed to the population of 1,227 persons, yielded 1,015 usable responses (for an …

Interaction Functions Of A Computer - Assisted Career Information And Guidance System: Macomb Community College, Joyce Kirkwood

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the possibility of whether interaction with a computer-assisted career information and guidance system is a function of the person's age, sex, or educational background. It further attempted to determine if there were differences in the career information needs of Macomb Community College students and those of the general Michigan Occupational Interest Survey (MOIS) user population of the Michigan Occupational Interest Coordinating Committee's study of 1980. Interviews were conducted for the purpose of finding some explanation of these differences. After tracing the development of career information expansion and reviewing current practices in the …

A Correlation Study Of Financial Planning Process Characteristics And Administrators' Perceptions Of Process Worth, Congruence, And Change In Selected Michigan Private Colleges, Gary Hammerberg Dec 1982

A Correlation Study Of Financial Planning Process Characteristics And Administrators' Perceptions Of Process Worth, Congruence, And Change In Selected Michigan Private Colleges, Gary Hammerberg

Dissertations

The need to study financial planning processes in institutions of higher education is demonstrated by the lack of information in the literature regarding perceptions of financial planning processes. During the current period of stress on educational institutions, an effective and efficient financial planning process can only be considered a benefit to the institution it serves.

Consequently, this investigation attempted to describe current financial planning prcesses in a selected number of private colleges within Michigan and to evaluate their financial planning processes as perceived by their administrators. This was done by identifying attitudes regarding the worth (effectiveness and efficiency), change dimension, …

A Study To Determine The Relationship Between The Amount Of Innovation Present In An Organization And The Governance Structure Of The Organization, Patricia M. Bauhs

Dissertations

As higher education administrators examine the applicability of management principles to education, the management of innovation comes into focus. This study was concentrated on the relationship between concern for innovation and other variables, namely: "Institutional Esprit," "Meeting Local Needs," "Self-Study and Planning," "Democratic Governance," and organization size. Relationships examined were based on perceptions of two groups--faculty and administrators--compared over a 12-year time period divided into two discrete, 6-year periods.

Ex post facto data from six systems (public universities, private universities, liberal arts colleges, state four-year colleges, community colleges, and private junior colleges) were purchased from the Educational Testing Service. Data …

A Study Of Financially Supportive And Financially Nonsupportive Alumni Of Los Angeles Baptist College, Richard Steven Koole

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine which variables (alumni characteristics) may influence the giving pattern of alumni to their alma mater. With American colleges facing a continuing need for funds, a clear understanding of factors which may influence alumni giving is vital.

A questionnaire was mailed to all of the alumni of Los Angeles Baptist College. After receiving responses from 54% of the alumni contacted, the data were analyzed to determine whether certain alumni characteristics affected whether an alumnus was a donor or nondonor. The 28 alumni characteristics studied were divided into five categories: (a) academic achievement, (b) …

Self-Esteem And Altruism Perceived As Motivational Factors For Alumni Giving, And Their Relationships To Various Donor Characteristics, Gerald Leonard Anderson

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate relationships between alumni donor characteristics and self-esteem and altruism with the assumption that donor self-esteem and altruism are related to alumni giving behavior. Eight donor characteristics perceived to represent a cross-section of donor characteristics having a direct or indirect relationship to either self-esteem, altruism, or both, in regard to philanthropy, were selected for study. Self-esteem and altruism were selected because they are perceived to represent factors that are paramount in motivation for giving.

A survey instrument consisting of two sections was developed. Section one provided information regarding donor characteristics which included gender, …

A Study Of Localism In A Regional State University, Raymond E. Alie

Dissertations

This study investigated a relationship suggested in the literature between the level of service which academic departments in former teachers' colleges render to the teacher-training function and the local or cosmopolitan role orientation of their faculties. Localism and cosmopolitanism are polar sets of role expectations toward which professors and other professionals might orient. Dimensions of the local-cosmopolitan concept are: level of loyalty to the employing organization, commitment to professional role skills, and the use of an inner or outer reference group.

A scale of local-cosmopolitanism was constructed for this investigation. Validity of the instrument was established by panel judgment and …

A Comparative Study Of Campus Environments At Three Church-Related Colleges, William K. Stob

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate, compare and contrast the perceptions and expectations of second-semester freshmen in regard to several aspects of the campus environment at three church-related liberal arts colleges in western Michigan.

The review of the literature traced the origins and the development of private church-related higher education and outlined some rationale for the continuation of pluralism in American higher education. The review further indicated that church-related higher education appears to be caught in a period of self-doubt and uncertainty. Some studies have been conducted to assess the condition of church related higher education in America …
