The Office of Research, the College of Science and Technology, NSF-RISE and the NASA Center for Bionanotechnology and Environmental Research (CBER) provided summer research experiences for students on the campus of Texas Southern University. The 9-week 2014 program began with an orientation on June 2nd followed by engagement of students in research and scholarship with TSU faculty mentors. The research ranged from biological and technological innovations to artistic creations and scholarly inquiry with local and national implications in the respective fields. It is widely acknowledged that participation in mentored undergraduate research can provide students with benefits toward career choices and continuation with research and graduate careers. Most of the data on undergraduate research for African-American students is not derived from research programs at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU). Texas Southern University (TSU), in Houston, Texas is an HBCU with approximately 7,500 undergraduate students and here we report the evaluation of TSU’s 2012 summer program. Research activities for science, health, and technology majors will include hands-on basic research, laboratory technique, enrichment activities and field work as prescribed by the faculty and approved by the Office of Research. Research activities for students in the humanities, education, business, pre-law, social and behavioral sciences include formulating qualitative and mixed methods research questions, training in research methods, and hands-on experience towards the creation and use of such discipline-specific research tools as surveys, bibliographies, indices, and data series. Poster presentations are on August 6, 2012 and selected oral presentation on August 10, 2012.
