Returning for another year of school at Science Hill Academy, Shelbyville, Kentucky, she writes of her roommates and clothing purchases, asks about various family members, and warns that her tuition should be paid before she leaves school, noting the headmistress’s criticism that “Mississippians never paid their debts when they could help it.” She also expresses concern for her recently widowed mother’s emotional and physical health.
