The Effects Of Two Homework Assessment Schemes On At-Risk Student Performance In College Algebra, Twyla Harris May 2008

The Effects Of Two Homework Assessment Schemes On At-Risk Student Performance In College Algebra, Twyla Harris

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This project is the result of a yearlong study documenting the comparative effectiveness of two homework assessment schemes. While both schemes assess completeness and accuracy, one scheme was more traditional and one was more nontraditional in nature. The more traditional method required students to complete homework assignments that were constructed from problems found in the textbook that accompanied the course. These assignments were monitored and were checked weekly for accuracy. The non-traditional method utilized the on-line assessment tool called Math XLR. The effectiveness of these two methods was compared through analysis of differences in student persistence on homework, student performance …

Science And Social Studies: The Forgotten Content, Samantha Slaughter Apr 2008

Science And Social Studies: The Forgotten Content, Samantha Slaughter

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Abstract The daily curriculum of many elementary schools lacks instructional time in the content areas of science and social studies. Many teachers insist that they do not have the time or training to cover these content areas on a daily basis. This project will illustrate that through proper planning, integration, and professional development, teachers can feel empowered to teach these content areas. The project includes a succinct explanation of how science and social studies can be included on a daily basis in the regular classroom setting, a detailed curriculum map, daily schedule, and four basic integrated units. The curriculum map …

Ella And Henry: A Standards Based Unit And Accompanying Novel, Virginia Harris Prather

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

My CE/T consists of a young adult novel appropriate for elementary students and an accompanying Standards Based Unit of Study (SBUS). An SBUS is an instructional plan for teaching and learning that addresses content areas in a meaningful way. As part of the SBUS, I am including lesson plans, essential questions, a calendar for teaching this four-week unit, all worksheets, writing prompts, and other activities to be used, and an annotated bibliography of related works. The nature of this project is creative, as I have designed a unit for use in the elementary classroom. It will cover material from various …

Using Student Response Systems In Economics And Finance Classes, Jean Snavely, Michelle Trawick

Finance Faculty Publications

Student response systems (clickers) offer the potential for student engagement and active learning in the classroom. Use of the technology can also help instructors identify areas of uncertainty and use student feedback to customize lectures. Earlier identification of problem areas for both student and instructor should lead to more efficient and effective use of class time and better learning outcomes. This presentation covers best practices in the use of clickers in introductory statistics and principles of managerial finance classes. Topics include how to use clickers, sample exercises, what has worked and what hasn’t worked from personal experience, how to produce …

The Videoconferencing Classroom: What Do Students Think?, Dr. Anthony Mark Doggett Jan 2008

The Videoconferencing Classroom: What Do Students Think?, Dr. Anthony Mark Doggett

Architectural and Manufacturing Sciences Faculty Publications

The advantages of video conferencing in educational institutions are well documented. Scholarly literature has indicated that videoconferencing technology reduces time and costs between remote locations, fill gaps in teaching services, increases training productivity, enables meetings that would not be possible due to prohibitive travel costs, and improves access to learning (Martin, 2005; Rose, Furner, Hall, Montgomery, Katsavras, & Clarke, 2000; Townes-Young & Ewing, 2005; West, 1999). However, there are few studies that analyze the effectiveness of videoconferencing from the student’s perspective. Videoconferencing technology is often touted as a method to connect with previously inaccessible student populations, but does it adequately …
