The Wall Of Silence: Disrupting Kairotic Spaces, Victoria Jaye
The Wall Of Silence: Disrupting Kairotic Spaces, Victoria Jaye
Writing Center Analysis Papers
Every class has a balance of kairotic space where teachers have power and students accept that power within the confining space of the classroom. Power defines our world as well as our relationships to one another; without power there is no control which can be key to governing a classroom. Disruption of this power dynamic can open dialogue between teachers and students that might not have existed otherwise because students feel confined to the strictures binding their power creating a wall of silence. Using brainstorming and reflecting as well as peer tutoring, I experimented with breaking down the wall of …
The Picture Of Smartphones At School Is Not A Dire One And The Picture Of Student Competence Is A Bright One, Victor R. Lee
The Picture Of Smartphones At School Is Not A Dire One And The Picture Of Student Competence Is A Bright One, Victor R. Lee
Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications
In the United States, where I am based, one would get the impression that smartphones are a dangerous drug. Adults worry about smartphone addiction, the correlation of depression with smartphone usage, and an excess amount of screen time (e.g., Elhai, Levine, Dvorak, & Hall, 2016; Duke & Montag, 2017; Škařupová, Ólafsson, & Blinka, 2017). News headlines appear about technology moguls who will not allow their own children to have their own mobile device despite they themselves being the leaders in smartphone products and services. This then evokes guilt and causes anxiety for all the other American adults who are not …
Alabama And Mississippi: A Case Study In School Trust Land Management, John Morgan Maynes
Alabama And Mississippi: A Case Study In School Trust Land Management, John Morgan Maynes
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
School trust lands are an enormous, yet often overlooked resource for public education. In some states, they have the potential to fund public education in an entirely tax-free manner, and they contribute tax-free funding for schools in many states. Before the Constitution of the United States was written, Congress established a system for granting lands to support common schools. However, there is a gap in the scholarly discourse about this legacy. Souder and Fairfax (1996) noted in their comprehensive work on school trust lands that “other than noting the initial grant to Ohio, most texts ignore the remaining details surrounding …

High School And University Student Test Performance In The Study Of Human Growth And Development: A Concurrent Enrollment Study, Harold O. Monson
High School And University Student Test Performance In The Study Of Human Growth And Development: A Concurrent Enrollment Study, Harold O. Monson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Concurrent enrollment of high school students in college classes is becoming more common but it has not been clear if high school students can learn the material as well as college students. This study examined high-school and college students' learning by exposing them to the same text, a similar lesson plan, and the same test questions, while controlling for demographic, attitudinal, and experiential variables. Two questions were addressed: (a) Was there a practical difference between high school and college students in their ability to learn the material; and (b) was there a difference in the way they learned the material? …

Home/School/Community Factors Which Compete With Time High School Students Spend On Homework, John A. Sadler
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Home/school/community factors of student jobs, extracurricular activities, church activities, community activities, family activities, and television watching were examined to determine the relationship between these factors and the time students spent on homework. Two hundred forty-seven high school students were used as subjects. A student time log and questionnaire were developed and used to collect the data. Eight students were closely examined through case studies. When time spent on homework was correlated with time spent at a job, the results were strongly negative (r = -.89). Time spent on homework was moderately correlated (r= + .46) with time …
The Effects Of Incidental Teaching On The Generalized Use Of Social Amenities At School By A Mildly Handicapped Adolescent, L. K. Oswald, Benjamin Lignugaris / Kraft, R. West
The Effects Of Incidental Teaching On The Generalized Use Of Social Amenities At School By A Mildly Handicapped Adolescent, L. K. Oswald, Benjamin Lignugaris / Kraft, R. West
Special Education and Rehabilitation Counseling Faculty Publications
Recently, researchers have begun exploring the effects of incidental teaching on the acquisition of socially appropriate behavior by handicapped children and adults. The results of these investigations suggest that incidental teaching may facilitate the generalization of newly trained social skills. This study used incidental teaching procedures to teach a 16-year-old mildly handicapped student to use social amenities in a resource classroom. In addition, generalization was assessed to another resource classroom and to an art classroom. The results of the study indicated that the student increased his use of social amenities in the training setting. Moreover, directions to use thank you …

Role Analysis Of School Superintendents In Utah, Derwin Don Francom
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The purpose of the study was to determine how superintendents in the state of Utah perceived their role as superintendent. It focused on: (1) how superintendents perceived their role as superintendents, (2) what demands were affecting their role, (3) if superintendents in different-size school districts perceived their role differently, (4) how the superintendent-board relationship was viewed by the superintendents, and (5) what the superintendents considered to be the greatest problems facing them in Utah today.
A survey research design was used to collect the data from all 40 superintendents. For the purposes of analysis, the districts they represented were divided …

Status Of Junior High School Typing Programs In The State Of Utah, Jane Frances Blair
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
The following statement was made by Tonne, Popham, and Freeman in 1965:
With typewriting being offered in one-third of the junior high schools, with three-fourths of them starting this program within the last ten years, and with almost three-fourth of the schools reporting an increase in enrollment within the past year, it is obvious that a prospective typewriting teacher may well expect to find himself in a junior high school
Sanborn stated:
Personal-use typewriting belongs to the ninth grade, either in junior high school or in a four-year high school. Placed here, it not only affords the student the opportunity …

The purpose of this study was to evaluate a six week nutrition program in terms of its effect on nutrition knowledge and its effect on food practices and attitudes. A survey of the dietary food intake was also made. Fifth grade students in Granite School District, Salt Lake City, Utah, were the participants. A pretest and a postest were used to determine the effect of the program. The tests showed that cognitive knowledge increased in many areas, attitudes became more positive and there was little improvement in dietary intake. Dietary intake was low in fruits, vegetables and milk but adequate …
Instructional Costs In The School Of Graduate Studies At Utah State University, Evan N. Stevenson
Instructional Costs In The School Of Graduate Studies At Utah State University, Evan N. Stevenson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Institutions of higher learning are presently experiencing budget constraints unparalleled in recent times. The desire to reduce unnecessary expenditures has extended from administrators to the faculty and even to students. However, one of the greatest difficulties seems to be in identifying those specific areas where economies might be effected.
Business and industry have experienced the critical need for effective methods of analyzing their costs in order to survive in a competitive economy. Cost accounting techniques have been developed and have assisted in pinpointing both strengths and weaknesses. However, the administrator in higher education has been reluctant to accept similar approaches …

Comparison Of Attitudes Of Mothers And Fathers Toward Nursery School Education, Pamela Meals
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Attitudes of middle class mothers and fathers toward nursery school education were measured and compared. The subjects were parents of children who attended the Utah State University nursery school. A scale was developed to test parental attitudes. Attitudes toward nursery school education were definitely favorable. Comparison of attitudes expressed by mothers with those expressed by fathers revealed significant differences between the two groups, when the total number of responses of all scale items were considered together.
The total scale included 48 items comprising three subscales, which tested the following parental attitudes toward nursery school education: attitudes concerning a child's independence …
The Effect Of An Extended Music Curriculum On The Behavior Of Nursery School Children, Dorothy Ann Miller
The Effect Of An Extended Music Curriculum On The Behavior Of Nursery School Children, Dorothy Ann Miller
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The free play behavior of two of the Utah State University nursery school groups was observed and recorded according to the time sampling instrument devised to assess the musical activity of children. Twelve group music experiences, in addition to those of the regular curriculum, were presented to the experimental group while the control group received two such experiences.
Sex was found not to be a significant factor in the amount of musical activity; however, girls were slightly more active rhythmically than the boys. The children between 3 years 10 months and 4 years 4 months were the most active musically …

A Comparative Study Of 8th And 9th Grade Algebra Students At Clayton Junior High School, Steven Spencer Terry
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
With the inclusion of algebra in the eighth grade in the curricula of Clayton Junior High School there has been created a need for some means of identifying students who are likely to be successful in algebra at this level. For the most part, it has only involved, in the past, advising students with very low grades in arithemetic not to take algebra.
A Description Of Change In School Expenditures In The San Juan School District From 1951 To 1965 And An Analysis Of Student Achievement During The Same Period, Kenneth B. Maughan
A Description Of Change In School Expenditures In The San Juan School District From 1951 To 1965 And An Analysis Of Student Achievement During The Same Period, Kenneth B. Maughan
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The setting for this longitudinal cost-quality study was unique insofar as it provided the rare opportunity to involve a district that had undergone a "rags to riches" transition during the past decade.
The purpose of the study was twofold: (1) To report changes in the "learning opportunities" that were brought about as a result of money. (2) To determine if the per pupil expenditure level had any influence on the learning opportunities of pupils in the San Juan School District, as measured by the achievement gains on the California Achievement Test.
Three hypotheses were tested, all of which hypothesized that …
A Study Of The Extent To Which Further Consolidation Is Feasible And Desirable Within Selected County School Districts In Utah, Walter D. Talbot
A Study Of The Extent To Which Further Consolidation Is Feasible And Desirable Within Selected County School Districts In Utah, Walter D. Talbot
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Under the mandator consolidation act of 1915, the county-unit school district in Utah had its beginning (10). Although, through this consolidation movement, many small school districts were combined into larger ones, the elimination of the small districts did not, necessarily, provide for the elimination of the small schools. Due to several factors including distance, poor communication and transportation facilities, and a strong desire on the part of the people who lived in small communities for a voice in school matters, the consolidation of school attendance areas did not keep pace with school district reorganization.
With the improvement of highways and …
An Evaluation Of The Differences Among Lower, Middle And Upper Socio-Economic Groups In The Sixth Grades In The Ogden City Schools With Regard To Scholastic Achievement, Milton Kendrick
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
There are some inadequacies in our American way of life. One of these is the inadequate help and attention given to the problem of children who become shackled with their lower class environment with little or no desire or incentive to rise above this. The major challenge to any teacher is the ability to stimulate and inspire children to achieve or succeed. There are different degrees of achievement. For one child, great achievement is not the same as for another. The realization of this prompted the decision to see what differences in achievement exist among the three main socio-economic classes. …
Parent Education In A Cooperative Nursery School, Owen William Cahoon
Parent Education In A Cooperative Nursery School, Owen William Cahoon
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Parent education has existed for as long as one parent has attempted to help another, and for as long as we have records. To what extent it has served its purpose has not been fully established. Only the future will fully tell how successful parent education programs have been among those who participated in them, because the final measure of success of a parent education program is the degree to which it contributes to effective family relationships and to favorable growth and development of children in the home.
Parent education sometimes is defined as the use of educational techniques to …
Differences In Frustration Reactions Of Nursery School Children, Sharon Marshall
Differences In Frustration Reactions Of Nursery School Children, Sharon Marshall
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The study of frustration has been of interest to various people including psychiatrists, psychologists, and educators for a number of years. These people have been interested in frustration because the complexity of our modern life has involved so many frustrating experiences. Frustration has been defined by Dollard (8, p. 7) as "an interference with the occurrence of an instigated goal response at its proper time." Ruch (21, p. 151) defined frustration as "the denial or thwarting by some obstacle which lies between a need and its goal." These two definitions are in essence identical. The average person has many obstacles …
Differential Responses Of Student Teachers To Children In Nursery School, Carroll Carman Lambert
Differential Responses Of Student Teachers To Children In Nursery School, Carroll Carman Lambert
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
For some time the writer has observed the keen, creative sensitivity with which children respond to their world. She has also observed, however, that many teachers and parents seem to be quite unaware of this sensitivity. An illustration of this lack of awareness is the following experience: One day a nursery school teacher had a painful headache; in fact, it was suggested that she go home for the remainder of the day. Instead of going home, however, she decided to stay, thinking that her headache would soon abate. The teacher was sitting on a chair observing the children, unaware that …
An Analysis Of The Differential Responses Of A Group Of Nursery School Children To A Variety Of Musical Presentations, Eva Louise Godfrey
An Analysis Of The Differential Responses Of A Group Of Nursery School Children To A Variety Of Musical Presentations, Eva Louise Godfrey
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The problem of what kinds of music provide the most meaning for the young child has long been a concern of the author. It arises not only out of close experience with young children, but also out of a concern for the responsibility of providing them with meaningful aesthetic experiences. From this background of experience the problem is not purely an academic one. Its first and ultimate concern is an experiential one. Because it arises out of this particular background, the analysis of the problem and its study is less concerned with academic and scientific validity than might otherwise have …
