Journal of Student Engagement: Education Matters

Welcome to the 2014 volume of the Journal of Student Engagement: Education matters. These are changing times at the University of Wollongong (UOW), with a new faculty structure and outside factors and policies contributing to uncertainty about where everyone fits and what their role will be. This is particularly the case in the newly rebranded ‘School of Education’, with Adrian Piccoli’s (NSW Minister for Education) divisive decision to enforce Band 5 entry requirements for new undergraduate pre-service teachers, with expected impacts for both enrolments and sustainability of education programs in NSW.

Social Exclusion: Cultural Dissonance Between Travellers And Non-Travellers In British Secondary Schools, Sarah Harding Jan 2014

Social Exclusion: Cultural Dissonance Between Travellers And Non-Travellers In British Secondary Schools, Sarah Harding

Journal of Student Engagement: Education Matters

The British government aims to provide education for all and meet every student’s basic learning needs. The school system is the main avenue for educating pupils in Britain, but it is based on dominant cultures in the UK and does not always enable pupils from subordinate cultures to learn and develop their principles and values, especially students from Romani backgrounds. Such practices could lead to social exclusion. This paper looks at the cultural dissonance between Travellers and non-Travellers in British secondary schools. It analyses cultural discord between Traveller and non-Traveller pedagogies, traditions, behaviour, beliefs, expectations and values. The discordance could …

Assessing What Students Know: Effects Of Assessment Type On Spelling Performance And Relation To Working Memory, Alysha M. Calleia, Steven J. Howard Jan 2014

Assessing What Students Know: Effects Of Assessment Type On Spelling Performance And Relation To Working Memory, Alysha M. Calleia, Steven J. Howard

Journal of Student Engagement: Education Matters

A central objective of educational assessment is to maximise the accuracy (validity) and consistency (reliability) of the methods used to assess students’ competencies. Different tests, however, often employ different methods of assessing the same domain-specific skills (e.g., spelling). As a result, questions have arisen concerning the legitimacy of using these various modes interchangeably as a proxy for students’ abilities. To investigate the merit of these contentions, this study examined university students’ spelling performance across three commonly employed test modalities (i.e., dictation, error correction, proofreading). To further examine whether these test types vary in the cognitive load they place on test …

Catalytic Teaching: A Teaching Equation Transfers To Enhanced Student Learning, Claire Rogerson, Gerard Chomicz Jan 2014

Catalytic Teaching: A Teaching Equation Transfers To Enhanced Student Learning, Claire Rogerson, Gerard Chomicz

Journal of Student Engagement: Education Matters

This paper proposes that the teaching equation – where students, their levels of engagement and motivation create lifelong learners – is achieved with catalytic teaching approaches. Positive teaching practices are integral to the effective running of everyday classrooms, with teacher–student relationships important to the overall emotional and cognitive development of students. Three practical approaches are proposed, to implement aspects of the teaching equation for enhanced student learning. Using catalytic teaching ensures all students have access to positive teaching practices, leading to better student emotional and learning outcomes.

Addressing Giftedness In Lbote Student Populations: Issues In Identification, Professional Development And Home–School Partnerships, Georgia Harris Jan 2014

Addressing Giftedness In Lbote Student Populations: Issues In Identification, Professional Development And Home–School Partnerships, Georgia Harris

Journal of Student Engagement: Education Matters

The 1972 Marland Report stated that gifted education services were often not made available to various sub-populations of students, despite the fact that gifted students are found across all cultural groups. The underrepresentation of these minority students in gifted education programs has been recognised in the literature for several years, however, only recently has serious attention been given to the inclusion of Language Background other than English (LBOTE) and English Language Learners (ELLs) in gifted education programs. This paper will address giftedness in LBOTE student populations through exploring the issues of identification, professional development and nurturing home–school partnerships to support …

The Importance Of Teacher–Student Relationships, As Explored Through The Lens Of The Nsw Quality Teaching Model, Lauren Liberante Jan 2012

The Importance Of Teacher–Student Relationships, As Explored Through The Lens Of The Nsw Quality Teaching Model, Lauren Liberante

Journal of Student Engagement: Education Matters

This paper aims to address the importance of supportive teacher–student interactions within the learning environment. This will be explored through the three elements of the NSW Quality Teaching Model; Intellectual Quality, Quality Learning Environment and Significance. The paper will further observe the influences of gender on the teacher–student relationship, as well as the impact that this relationship has on student academic outcomes and behaviour. Teacher–student relationships have been found to have immeasurable effects on students’ learning and their schooling experience. This paper examines the ways in which educators should plan to improve their interactions with students, in order to allow …
