The Effect Of Dietary Sulfur On The Metabolism Of Long Chain Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids, Mei Fung Chen Aug 1988

The Effect Of Dietary Sulfur On The Metabolism Of Long Chain Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids, Mei Fung Chen

Doctoral Dissertations

The test hypothesis of this investigation was that methionine-supplemented diets could possibly interfere with the metabolism of polyunsaturated fatty acids, thereby altering the biosynthesis of the active metabolites, prostanoids, and the profiles of tissue phospholipids. The postulated mechanism of action for this dietary regimen would be to increase the tissue concentration of the active methyl donor, S-Adenosyl-methionine (SAM) which is also called an activated methionine. SAM is a potent inhibitor of the cycloaxygenase enzyme which is important for the synthesis of biologically active prostanoids.

The results demonstrated that liver microsomes from rats fed the methionine-supplemented diet had a statistically significant …

A Survey Of Health Risk Factors Among Tennessee Adolescents: Ninth And Twelfth Graders, Deborah Ann Fortune Aug 1988

A Survey Of Health Risk Factors Among Tennessee Adolescents: Ninth And Twelfth Graders, Deborah Ann Fortune

Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to identify health risk factors for teens attending selected Tennessee public schools as either ninth or twelfth graders during the school year 1986-1987 and to provide baseline data for future school health education programs in Tennessee.

The data were collected using a computerized health risk appraisal questionnaire. The sample consisted of 1,348 ninth and twelfth grade students from seven selected Tennessee public schools across the state. Of the 1,348 students, 720 were ninth graders and 628 were twelfth graders. Descriptive statistics were used to obtain frequencies and percentages of the sample according to grade, …

A Relationship Between Vitamin B12, Folate, Ascorbic Acid, And Mercury Metabolism, Nancy Elizabeth Zorn Aug 1988

A Relationship Between Vitamin B12, Folate, Ascorbic Acid, And Mercury Metabolism, Nancy Elizabeth Zorn

Masters Theses

The effect of megadoses of vitamin B12, folate, and vitamin C on the in vivo methylation of mercuric chloride was studied in guinea pigs. The incorporation of high levels of vitamin B12, folate, and vitamin C resulted in a decrease in both inorganic mercury and methylmercury concentrations in all tissues except the lung and heart compared to controls. However, percent methylmercury levels tended to increase with vitamin treatments.

The addition of megadoses of vitamin B12 fed either singularly or in combination with the other vitamins resulted in increased methylmercury concentrations in the liver, spleen, and …

The Knoxville City Schools Proficiency Project: A Summary Analysis Of Three Years And Year-Three Results, Kathleen S. Puckett Aug 1988

The Knoxville City Schools Proficiency Project: A Summary Analysis Of Three Years And Year-Three Results, Kathleen S. Puckett

Masters Theses

The Knoxville City Schools (KCS) Proficiency Project was designed to help inner-city high school pupils improve their scores on the state proficiency test. Grade-nine pupils in lower achieving project high schools and grade-eight students from the corresponding middle schools were given intense treatment over a three-year period. Proficiency test scores for grade-nine students were analyzed each year and were compared to results in control high schools and to the scores of the total city high school population.

Project results showed steady, sustained improvement. By the end of year three, the average percent of pupils passing the state proficiency test in …

The Relationship Between The Frequency Of Occurrence Of Potentially Stressful Events And Their Overall Ranking By School Psychologists, With Exercise As A Moderating Variable, Harold Wayne Jernigan Jun 1988

The Relationship Between The Frequency Of Occurrence Of Potentially Stressful Events And Their Overall Ranking By School Psychologists, With Exercise As A Moderating Variable, Harold Wayne Jernigan

Doctoral Dissertations

The concept of stress and its relationship to events relevant to the profession of school psychology was investigated. The purpose of this descriptive study was to investigate the relationship between the relative frequency of stressful events related to school psychology and their overall ranking as to degree of stressfulness, with exercise considered as a moderating variable.

The survey research method was utilized. Surveys were mailed to a sample of 281 school psychologists, primarily within the state of Tennessee. The instrument included a modified version of Wise's (1985) School Psychologists and Stress Inventory which allowed each of 35 potentially stressful events …

Art, Science, Arete, Neil Greenberg

University Studies Interdisciplinary Publications

"In the process of institutionalizing and disciplining major human impulses, means and ends are often muddled. The methods most efficient for different endeavors are often profoundly different, some strictly empirical, some integrative, others reductionist. The goals, on the other hand, of fields so seemingly dissimilar as art and science, are found to be more strikingly similar the deeper one digs."

A Comparison Of Three Transfer Of Training Strategies In Inservice Adult Teacher Training, John A. Henschke Edd Jan 1988

A Comparison Of Three Transfer Of Training Strategies In Inservice Adult Teacher Training, John A. Henschke Edd

IACE Hall of Fame Repository

The need for effective inservice education for teachers in great. Often, inservice programs teach new knowledge and skills, but there is little carry over into teaching practice. The purpose of this study was to develop an effective inservice program in methods of teaching specific subject matter and to compare the effectiveness of four difference follow-up strategies: consultant coaching, team coaching, group meeting, and no follow-up. The major hypotheses tested were: teachers receiving training will demonstrate a significant increase in mean scores on a knowledge test and on a skill performance instrument when compared with a group of teachers not receiving …

Long Term Impact Evaluation Of Continuing Education Programs, John A. Henschke Edd

IACE Hall of Fame Repository

The information explosion in our technologically oriented society has brought with it a shortened time span of cultural and factual knowledge change in each succeeding decade. Thus, professionals constantly need continuing education programs which provide up-dated information and skill development in their respective fields to keep from becoming obsolete. However, a question remains for those who seek to serve those needs: How will the long term impact of these continuing education programs be measured, determined and evaluated? One continuing education program has sought to answer that major question. In 1975 some rural health care professionals originated a request to an …
