Examining Factors That Explain Depression And Anxiety Among Transgender College Students, Amber M. Bennett

This mixed-methods study aimed to examine the relationship between transgender students’ mental health with their perceptions of belonging, social support, and overall campus climate. It was hypothesized that transgender college students who perceive a more inclusive campus climate, higher levels of perceived belongingness, and higher levels of social supports within their college environment will experience lower severity of anxiety and depression symptoms. 117 respondents were recruited via online platforms and through active membership in professional organizations. Depression and anxiety have been on the rise on college campuses. Reports indicate that more than a quarter of undergraduate students are suffering from mental health issues (Eisenberg & Ketchen Lipson, 2017). While it is likely that support for mental illness will always be needed, the science of positive psychology offers additional opportunities for improving mental health. Students from low-income families are not as likely as their more affluent peers to complete a baccalaureate degree. While other forces - including, but not limited to, prior academic preparation, academic integration, social integration, and engagement on campus - may influence a student's decision to persist or drop out of college, some students simply are not able to afford to pay tuition, fees, and living expenses.
