Seniors Teach Others Real Intergenerational Experiences (S.T.O.R.I.E.)

Teacher Education Majors at the University of Northern Iowa are matched with senior adults residing at Western Home Communities. During their ten one-hour meetings, the students and residents are guided in their discussions by the book Gratitude: Affirming One Another through Stories (2013) written by UNI Emeritus Faculty, Dr. Len Froyen. Through conversations and stories, the seniors of both generations are enhancing their understanding, compassion and acceptance of each other. S.T.O.R.I.E. Time gives the seniors a chance to choose a story together that ...

Fifth Graders’ Creativity In Inventions With And Without Creative Articulation Instruction, Darcie K. Kress, Audrey C. Rule Nov 2017

Fifth Graders’ Creativity In Inventions With And Without Creative Articulation Instruction, Darcie K. Kress, Audrey C. Rule

Journal of STEM Arts, Crafts, and Constructions

Industry and authors of 21st Century Skill Frameworks are calling for student proficiency in creativity, problem-solving, innovation, collaboration, and communication skills. This project involved 13 fifth grade gifted students in inventing products for a specified audience with a set of given materials, time limit, and topic constraints. The complex, challenging project supports Next Generation Science Engineering Process Standard 3-5-ETS1-2 and applies concepts of plant and animal adaptations. The study had a counterbalanced, repeated measures design in which student made an initial invention during the pretest, then participated in two trials with one in the control condition and the other ...

Challenging Elementary Learners With Programmable Robots During Free Play And Direct Instruction, Kimberly S. Mccoy-Parker, Lindsey N. Paull, Audrey C. Rule, Sarah E. Montgomery

Journal of STEM Arts, Crafts, and Constructions

Computer programming skills are important to many current careers; teaching robot coding to elementary students can start a positive foundation for technological careers, develop problem-solving skills, and growth mindsets. This study, through a repeated measures design involving students in two classrooms at two widelyseparated grade levels (first graders aged 6-7 years and fifth graders aged 10-11 years), determined if allowing students to challenge themselves with coding exercises in the experimental condition resulted in greater learning and more positive attitudes than a more structured set of exercises provided by the teacher in the control condition. Background instruction in coding and using ...

Reading Nonfiction Science Literature With And Without Arts Integration Activities, Elizabeth Mccartney, Catherine Mochal, Victoria Boyd, Audrey C. Rule, Sarah E. Montgomery

Journal of STEM Arts, Crafts, and Constructions

This study explores the integration of the arts into the teaching of science nonfiction texts during literacy instruction. Sixty-one elementary students (15 second graders, 25 third graders, and 21 fifth graders) attending schools of differing socio-economic levels participated in this study. The study examined the effects of artsintegration on student content knowledge, engagement level, and attitudes toward learning regarding science nonfiction texts. Throughout the eight-week study, students experienced both the traditional no-arts control condition and the experimental arts-integration condition in two-week segments for different science topics. Both conditions employed literacy strategies to teach comprehension of science nonfiction texts. The resulting ...

Examining Natural Selection By Sketching And Making Models Of The Finches Of The Galapagos Islands, Phoebe J. Z. Pittman, Jolene K. Teske Nov 2017

Examining Natural Selection By Sketching And Making Models Of The Finches Of The Galapagos Islands, Phoebe J. Z. Pittman, Jolene K. Teske

Journal of STEM Arts, Crafts, and Constructions

This practical lesson describes how students in six eighth grade science classes participated in a lesson combining the National Core Arts Standards with the Next Generation Science Standards. The goal of the lesson was to provide visual representations of finch beak form and function so students could better understand genetic variation and how environmental pressures influence natural selection. Students sketched a finch with a large, medium, or small beak, corresponding to an experiment they had conducted with picking up different sizes of seeds with different sizes of binder clips. Using modeling with a variety of media, students created bird beaks ...

Cinematherapy In Gifted Education Identity Development: Integrating The Arts Through Stem-Themed Movies, Timothy C. Kangas, Michelle Cook, Audrey C. Rule Nov 2017

Cinematherapy In Gifted Education Identity Development: Integrating The Arts Through Stem-Themed Movies, Timothy C. Kangas, Michelle Cook, Audrey C. Rule

Journal of STEM Arts, Crafts, and Constructions

Gifted students, because of their advanced development compared to peers, have emotional needs that require differentiated education programs. Asynchronous social and emotional development of gifted students often leads to identity issues. Cinematherapy can be used to help gifted students explore their identities through analysis of the actions of gifted characters in films. This practical article suggests STEM-themed movies with characters facing challenges useful for gifted student identity development. The Autonomous Learners Model is used to classify gifted learners in the movies to assist teachers in matching movies to the needs of gifted learners. Tables of STEM-themed movies with gifted characters ...

Middle Level Preservice Teachers Experience A Natural History Arts-Integrated Interdisciplinary Thematic Unit, Carolyn A. Weber, Audrey C. Rule

Journal of STEM Arts, Crafts, and Constructions

Curricular demands and best practices for middle school require interdisciplinary units. Arts integration can provide motivation and a new pathway to learning. This unit focused on inquiry into the natural history of artifacts and rocks recovered from the exposed subsoil of an area near Cedar Falls, Iowa that had been bulldozed as part of subdivision development. The described unit involved preservice teachers in exploration of all subject areas (language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies) with arts-integrated projects (agate watercolor painting, stone tool graphing, acrylic polymer clay agate keyring making, and stone tool drawings). The content area activities for social ...

3s2. Filling The Gap For English Language Learning From Underrepresented Language Students (Ell-Ul), Milan M'Enesti Nov 2017

3s2. Filling The Gap For English Language Learning From Underrepresented Language Students (Ell-Ul), Milan M'Enesti

Education Summit

Multicultural K-12 education in the U.S. is facing more cultural competence challenges. Even though, in the last decade, there is an increase of bicultural programs in public schools, a population of students coming from immigrated families are invisible to such programs: English Language Learners from locally Underrepresented Languages (ELL-UL). These students cannot be part of bilingual programs because there are not funds allocated for hiring bilingual teachers to cover a small number of students. Research shows that ELL students have either a high dropout rate or unsuccessful academic performance: ELL-ULs are the underserved part of this population of students ...

3c1. The Role Of Community Support In Navigating The Superintendency For African American Women, Francemise Kingsberry Nov 2017

3c1. The Role Of Community Support In Navigating The Superintendency For African American Women, Francemise Kingsberry

Education Summit

African American women are underrepresented in the superintendency (Angel, Killacky, & Johnson, 2013; Bynum & Young, 2015; Grogan, 2014; Kowalski, McCord, Petersen, Young, & Ellerson, 2011; Liang, Sottile, & Peters, 2016; Robicheau & Krull, 2016). In their journeys, they face barriers such as discrimination based on race and gender, negative stereotypes, and a lack of opportunity (Angel et al., 2013; Grogan, 2014; Kowalski et al., 2011; Liang et al., 2016). This phenomenological study (Glesne, 1999; Moustakas, 1994; van Manen, 1990) examines the barriers experienced by four African American women superintendents in a Southern state as well as the resiliency (Henderson & Milstein, 2003) strategies they employed to overcome the challenges they encountered en route to and within the superintendency. The purpose of this discourse is to highlight the role community support plays in the success of these superintendents to fill a ...

2d1. “You Can Be A Bridge”: Toward Cultural Citizenship In Elementary Classrooms, Noreen Naseem Rodriguez Nov 2017

2d1. “You Can Be A Bridge”: Toward Cultural Citizenship In Elementary Classrooms, Noreen Naseem Rodriguez

Education Summit

This paper examines how three Asian American elementary teachers' pedagogical decisions regarding the teaching of Asian American history were influenced by their understandings of citizenship and reveals how broader understandings of citizenship can result in more inclusive cultural citizenship education. The theoretical frame of Asian Critical Race Theory (AsianCrit) was essential to this examination as it centered the Asian American experience in the teachers' decision-making processes, asserting the significance of their common identity as Asian Americans in spite of their personal and professional differences. Through their work, the teachers (re)defined what it meant to be Asian American, to be ...

2x1. Uni Teacher Preparation: Iowa Principals’ Perceptions, Victoria Robinson, Mary Losch Nov 2017

2x1. Uni Teacher Preparation: Iowa Principals’ Perceptions, Victoria Robinson, Mary Losch

Education Summit

In Fall 2015, UNI researchers, teacher educators and College of Education leaders met to design an in-depth interview process to help teacher educators better understand what Iowa principals believe is important for teachers to know, be able to do and be like. This study is an example of how educators in pK-12 settings and higher education are looking for ways to support relationships between educators at all levels. The results of this study provide a variety of principals’ current thoughts about what should be important features of teacher education programs. Seven major themes emerged: Pedagogy; Content Knowledge; Relationships; Classroom Management ...

2s1. Re-Framing Master Narratives Of Dis/Ability Through An Emotion Lens: Sophia Cruz’S Ld Story At Her Intersections, David Hernandez-Saca Nov 2017

2s1. Re-Framing Master Narratives Of Dis/Ability Through An Emotion Lens: Sophia Cruz’S Ld Story At Her Intersections, David Hernandez-Saca

Education Summit

Learning disabilities (LD) researchers have produced a knowledge base about the academic side of LD. A gap exists concerning the experiences of individuals with LD, particularly their feeling-meaning-making about having LD. Based on a three-year qualitative study using critical ethnographic methods, I center Sophia Cruz's experiences with LD and the label. Sophia experienced the hegemony of smartness and disability micro-aggressions and voiced the idea that LD is a complex multifaceted construct. I discuss implications for the LD field. In addition, I provide tools for participants to improve their ability to work with historically marginalized team members and populations such ...

1c1. Students With An Edge: Community Partnerships That Support All Learners, Jill Janes, Kris Byam Nov 2017

1c1. Students With An Edge: Community Partnerships That Support All Learners, Jill Janes, Kris Byam

Education Summit

Today’s pK-12 students are preparing for a future workplace that is being written while they inhabit our classrooms. Educators, employers, and policymakers each have a stake in creating a global-ready workforce, yet each entity alone cannot effectively reach all learners. This session highlights an exemplar model for pK-12 work-based learning that engages all stakeholders in ongoing development of community- and industry-relevant learning experiences. The model encourages community-based career awareness and exploration in elementary grades with more advanced preparation and training in high school. A continuum of structure for accessing work-based learning experiences at the high school provides a culminating ...
