This literature review addresses the topic of assessing students with the use of electronic portfolios. The purpose of the review is to document for educators the advantages of electronic portfolios, the media selection options, as well as implementation procedures. Electronic portfolios are an alternative authentic assessment method that invites active student learning and provides an opportunity for instructors to design assessment strategies based on desired student-learning outcomes.

Writing is a process. To assess this process, it needs to be described through qualitative techniques. Writing is a process. To assess involvement in a process, it needs to be described. Therefore, qualitative assessment needs to be applied. Portfolios, supported by other descriptive techniques, can be used not only to assess children's writing progress and instructional needs but to connect instruction and assessment. Writing portfolios were implemented into a fifth grade writing program as a means of qualitative assessment. The descriptive nature of portfolio assessment is the focus of this project, which describes the teacher's interaction with three I students during teacher-student conferences as writing collections were developed. The writing conferences consisted of the teacher and students collaboratively reflecting on student writing and setting goals for further writing activity and instructional sessions. Maintaining portfolios of students' writings has become a popular means of assessing both students' progress and program effectiveness in writing at the first-grade level. The strong relationship that exists between writing processes and reading processes indicates that writing portfolios may provide a productive source of information for a teacher in assessing first-grade students' progress in reading processes as well as in writing ability. One of the most positive trends occurring in large-scale assessment is the use of portfolio assessment. The purpose of this study was to determine if providing language arts students with the opportunity to be assessed by the portfolio method provides students with a greater understanding of their academic progress and to determine if a higher level of student self-efficacy exists when using the portfolio method instead of the traditional report card method of assessment.
