Graduate Research Papers

In a time where the stakes are high and pressures from the federal and . state government are mandating that all students are to achieve and no child is to be left behind, school improvement needs to be at the forefront of education in the state of Iowa. "Student achievement is the cornerstone of the success of principals, and teachers are a key factor in the area of student performance" (Zepeda, 2004, p.12). Unfortunately, there is not one catchall solution to school improvement; the solution is unique to the school setting and the students it serves. As a result, it …

The use of personality type information about student affairs graduate students is , interesting to speculate about. A graduate program could identify what populations of students it is attracting for enrollment. Such information could allow them to adjust their recruitment techniques in order to attract a more diverse student body. Understanding the personality types of students in the classroom would provide insight into the most effective instruction techniques. Personality type information could also be helpful for advisors to use in assisting students with selecting electives and practicum or internship experiences that complement their type. Graduate students could learn more about …

Baby Boomer Parents : Challenges With Their Increasing Involvement, Deborah E. Kosina

Graduate Research Papers

As the children of boomers move through education system, there is an increasing parental involvement in the college student's experience. This is the result of a combination of factors, including the increasingly higher cost of attendance, boomer parents' own experiences in higher education, societal trends to extend adolescence, and student issues today that can sometimes be life-threatening.

While this parental involvement can blur the lines of just who the institution is educating and responsible to – student or parent – administrators would be wise to acknowledge this participation and develop well-defined and consistent policy regarding it. As Murray (1999) pointed …

Beer Before Liquor, Or Liquor Before Beer : A Research Review Of Binge Drinking Escalation In Greek-Letter Societies On College Campuses Today, Thomas M. O'Shea

Graduate Research Papers

In 1990 college presidents rated college student alcohol abuse as the problem that gave them the greatest concern (Boyer, 1990). However, one specific college campus population that seems to be more likely to binge drink is those students affiliated with the National Fraternities and Sororities.

The purpose of this paper is: • To focus on and define the concept of binge drinking • To establish specific data that show that binge drinking is a problem with fraternity and sorority members • To research and suggest possible solutions that college administrators may use to combat the binge drinking problem on their …

Are Black Colleges Necessary?, Mark B. Longley Jan 2001

Are Black Colleges Necessary?, Mark B. Longley

Graduate Research Papers

Black colleges have a vital role in the lives of young people and the black community as a whole. They are not vanguards of segregation, but of black culture and black life. Though they are not the most up-to-date technologically, or offer the most magnificent campuses, or accumulate large endowments, they are the most successful in educating black students, doing it with minimal resources. I suggest other institutions study the techniques of HBCUs in order to educate all young people, particularly other minority groups such as Latinos and Native Americans. Our communities, states, and federal governments as well as corporations …

Diversity In The College Curriculum : Overview Of The Literature, Ruben J. Carrion

Graduate Research Papers

The colleges and universities in the United States that have adopted a proactive commitment to diversity in the curriculum have done so because they understand how their central mission is linked with the future of a diverse society. They are aware that, in the new millennium, most new jobs in the economy require a postsecondary education, and women and racial/ethnic minorities compose a majority of the workforce. One result of this awareness is the transformation taking place at many institutions that links diversity in the curriculum with the development of new teaching practices and learning practices.

This review of the …

Tenure Impediments For Women Professors, Mary A. Traetow Jan 2000

Tenure Impediments For Women Professors, Mary A. Traetow

Graduate Research Papers

Women have long been struggling for equality in the tenured ranks of academia. The rigid tenure system has historically sanctioned rules for all who wish to enter. Research into this persistent inequity has focused on the "chilly" structure of universities (Blum, 1991) and on the question of women's ability to produce scholarship (Cole & Zuckerman, 1987). However, gender related issues as possible impeding factors for women professors seeking tenure have not been researched fully. The research focus is on how women's issues can be detrimental to the tenure climb of women professors. The paper will begin with a literature review …

The Ethics Of Intimate Student-Faculty Relationships, Brian Craig Steinberg Jan 1999

The Ethics Of Intimate Student-Faculty Relationships, Brian Craig Steinberg

Graduate Research Papers

What are the ethics behind intimate student-faculty relationships in higher education? Should such relationships be allowed? Can they be legally controlled? Should there be a penalty for faculty and students who engage in these relationships? Consenting romantic and/or sexual relationships between faculty and student, or between student services professional and student, although usually not expressly forbidden, are generally deemed unwise (Cahn, 1986). According to Svinicki (1994), codes of ethics for most professional associations forbid "professional-client" sexual relationships. In an educational institution, the professor-student and student affairs professional-student relationships are thus such "professional-client" relationships. The respect and trust accorded a professor …

Aids Education On College Campuses, Lauretta A. Dienberg Jan 1998

Aids Education On College Campuses, Lauretta A. Dienberg

Graduate Research Papers

Many researchers have examined the issue of college students and AIDS. Most have come to the same conclusion, that students know how to protect themselves but don't see AIDS as personal threat to their lives. As colleges become more diverse and more students are able to attend college, these issues probably will become more complex. Coupled with diversity issues, AIDS has now become known as a chronic rather than deadly disease, as a result of progress made toward treating AIDS and through early detection.
