The Effect Of An Intensive Writing Instruction Assessment Preparation Program On Student Writing Proficiency, Edward J. Bennett
The Effect Of An Intensive Writing Instruction Assessment Preparation Program On Student Writing Proficiency, Edward J. Bennett
Student Work
An intensive writing instruction and assessment preparation program was evaluated to determine its effectiveness in helping students improve their performance on a standardized statewide writing assessment. Following the six-week program, pretest to posttest gains made by 8th-grade students ( N = 74) revealed significant improvement in writing performance on the statewide assessment. As reflected by subject test scores, the control group of 8th-grade students (N = 86) also demonstrated significant pretest to posttest gains. Although posttest statewide writing assessment scores were significant for both groups, Norm Referenced Normal Curve Equivalent posttest measures dipped significantly for both groups. However, the achievement …

Higher Education
In 1994, during a tour of the then-new natural sciences building- a $43 million teaching and research complex fully equipped with the latest in technology and instrumentation for chemistry and geology courses-a member of the Buffalo Public Schools Board of Education asked, "How can the community [that paid for it] have access to this teaching and research equipment?" That question triggered the effort reported here - a program to better link teaching and research to community service.

Service Learning In Medical Education: Project Description And Evaluation, Nicole J. Borges, Paul J. Hartung
Service Learning In Medical Education: Project Description And Evaluation, Nicole J. Borges, Paul J. Hartung
Service Learning, General
Although medical education has long recognized the importance of community service, most medical schools have not formally nor fully incorporated service learning into their curricula. To address this problem, we describe the initial design, development, implementation, and evaluation of a service-learning project within a first-year medical school course. Medical students (eight women, eight men) screened clients of a community agency for high blood pressure and educated them about the effects of hypertension on health. Results of the project indicated significant increases in students' attitudes, knowledge, and skills related to community health, resources, and service. Infusing medical education with service-learning activities …

Concurrent/dual enrollment programs at postsecondary educational institutions have rapidly proliferated across the country during the last several years with wide variations in the structure and composition of such programs. Having recently completed a pilot phase of its first dual enrollment program, the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) has enjoyed great success due to a relatively unique partnership formed between the university and Omaha area school districts.

The Development And Validation Of The Elementary School Ethical Climate Index, Kay Anne Keiser, Laura E. Schulte
Educational Leadership Faculty Publications
The purposes of this study were to develop and validate an instrument that measures the ethical climate of elementary schools. To create the Elementary School Ethical Climate Index (ESECI), we adapted the ethical climate index for middle and high schools. The ESECI assesses student and teacher interactions and relationships through the application of five ethical principles: respect for autonomy, nonmaleficence, beneficence, justice, and fidelity (Kitchener, 1984, 1985). To provide evidence of the ESECI’s reliability and validity we distributed the ESECI to the students and teachers/staff at one urban elementary school in a Midwestern city. There was a significant difference in …
