Teaching Character Education To Students With Behavioral And Learning Disabilities Through Mentoring Relationships, Howard S. Muscott, Sara Talis O'Brien

Disabilities

Despite nation-wide efforts to implement character education programs in schools, there is no research that specifically examines the effectiveness of these programs on students with behavioral and learning disabilities. SO (Service-Learning Opportunities) prepared for citizenship, an inclusive after school program, was designed to enhance the character development of elementary students by teaching specific character traits including: (1) responsibility and self-control; (2) cooperation and teamwork; and (3) respect and appreciation of diversity through language arts and other activities. Correlates With Use Of Telecomputing Tools: K-12 Teachers' Beliefs And Demographics, Judith B. Harris, Neal Grandgenett

What can be determined about the demographic characteristics beliefs about teaching, degrees of innovativeness, and world views of classroom teachers and specialists who use Internet-based telecomputing tools? This study correlated data representing a year of online use with responses to questionnaire items about teacher beliefs and demographics for 558 respondents from a sample of 1,000 randomly selected Internet account holders on TENET, the statewide K-12 –educational telecomputing network in Texas. Results showed significant correlations among beliefs about teaching, personal perceptions of innovativeness, and world views; respondents who were more student-centered in their beliefs about teaching perceived themselves to be more …

Project Summaries

The 1998 Minnesota Graduation Rule defines what students should master during their school years. Going beyond paper-and-pencil tests, the rule requires students to demonstrate what they can do as well as what they know. As the rule has been developed, teachers and school districts have been scrambling to adjust their programs to address the individualized learning requirements that emphasize experiential, project-based learning.

A comprehensive, public university, the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) is located in the heart of Nebraska's largest city. Situated on 88.5 acres and surrounded by beautiful parks and residential neighborhoods, the University is easily accessed by three of Omaha's main arteries: Dodge Street, 72nd Street and 60th Street. The Peter Kiewit Institute of Information Science, Technology and Engineering will open in August 1999. The institute is located on a 70-acre parcel of land at 67th and Pacific streets. Each is connected to the interstate system circling Omaha.

Service-Learning For Preservice Teachers: Ethical Dilemmas For Practice, David M. Donahue

Service Learning, General

Increasingly in the United States, service-learning is being used to educate preservice teachers. Service varies greatly in its ethical foundation, however, and service-learning presents new teachers with a variety of dilemmas revealing the moral and political nature of teaching and service. This article presents one case of four preservice teachers writing curriculum as a service to a community agency hoping to promote service geared toward social justice among high school students. The case highlights ethical dilemmas faced by teachers in the process and illustrates the potential of service-learning to educate teachers for the moral imperative of their profession.

This pilot project, funded by the Ford Foundation, establishes Youth Act! For Human Rights initiatives in two locations (Washington D.C. and Vancouver, WA), conducts social justice activism training for young people within these communities, challenges youth to put their newly learned human rights education into action, and provides a vehicle, via community advocacy summits, for them to showcase the results of their human rights activism.

This curriculum is designed to give students the experience of developing, designing and obtaining financing to open and run their own business. This business is a coffee shop with Internet access that will be open to the general public. Students maintain various jobs to learn about management, operations, inventory, sales and customer service. Students participate in ongoing training focused on skills necessary for operating the coffee shop and for future jobs.
