The National Congress Of Black Faculty, Ronald W. Walters
The National Congress Of Black Faculty, Ronald W. Walters
Trotter Review
In recent years serious problems have arisen in the field of black higher education that have not been subject to systematic examination and corrective programming. These problems have magnified the necessity for a vehicle through which black faculty might be mobilized to contribute to the enhance ment of their own professional opportunities and thus make a significant impact upon black higher education in general. Some of these problems are discussed below.
Dynamics Of Minority Education: An Index To The Status Of Race And Ethnic Relations In The United States, James E. Blackwell
Dynamics Of Minority Education: An Index To The Status Of Race And Ethnic Relations In The United States, James E. Blackwell
Trotter Review
Throughout this century scholars and legal experts have devoted special attention to the issue of race and ethnicity as a determinant of life chances in the United States. Some of the more influential treatises in the social and behavioral sciences, many of which have become classics, addressed fundamental, derivative (and often more compelling) extensions of race and ethnicity. They focused on such topics as race-based group dominance, ethnic stratification, structural inequality based upon racial or ethnic identification, beliefs in inherent racial superiority and status privilege, class exploitation, the nature of prejudice, and the maintenance of power over groups defined as …
Writing Toward Understanding, Dianne Gregory
Writing Toward Understanding, Dianne Gregory
Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection
The author -- a writer and student of creativity -- sets out to record her creative process while writing a novel and then match it to prevailing creativity theory. However, in her process notes she finds none of the typical concerns of cognitive psychology, such as problem-finding, risk-taking, breaking set, and other heuristics. The three theorists -- Amabile, Perkins, and Howard -- who seemed impressive to the author as a student, turn irrelevant when she reads them through the eyes of a writer-storyteller. From the fatty flesh of her notes and unformed recollections, elements of the author’s own personal process …

The Search For A Massachusetts Chancellor: Autonomy And Politics In Higher Education, Richard A. Hogarty
The Search For A Massachusetts Chancellor: Autonomy And Politics In Higher Education, Richard A. Hogarty
New England Journal of Public Policy
Political scientists have not devoted much attention to the politics of higher education. Their reluctance is hard to explain since the material for study is close at hand and the subject offers ample research opportunities. The search for a chancellor conducted by the Massachusetts Board of Regents in 1986 aroused considerable public attention and controversy. This case study examines that controversy along with the tensions that arise when academic and political forces collide. Few searches in academia are perfect and none is a morality play. This one proved to be no exception. This article is an attempt to reconstruct the …

Literacy As A Source For Critical Consciousness Thought, Language, And Concept Of Self, Victoria Byerly
Literacy As A Source For Critical Consciousness Thought, Language, And Concept Of Self, Victoria Byerly
Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection
This thesis is a study of the complex interrelation between thought and language and the relevance of social and cultural influences on a mature critical concept of self. This study represents an effort to propose a curriculum for literacy that facilitates the restructuring of consciousness in the adult learner. The intent is to promote transformation of student apperception from that of internalized reactive powerlessness to proactive self-empowerment. It is an emancipatory theory of literacy with a corresponding transformative pedagogy that promotes the ability to name and define the relationship of self and environment, and one that engages learners to transform …

Introducing Aids Education In Connecticut Schools, William Sabella
Introducing Aids Education In Connecticut Schools, William Sabella
New England Journal of Public Policy
Most of the nation 's schoolchildren are not infected with the AIDS virus (HIV). Since AIDS is a preventable disease, no one need become infected. In order to protect themselves, everyone, including children, must understand exactly how HIV is and is not contracted. The message of prevention, however, is controversial, since it must include advice on safer sex and drug use.
In 1984, Connecticut was forced to face the issue of a child with HIV infection entering school. The state responded by creating guidelines for prevention of disease transmission in schools and by subsequently developing an AIDS curriculum. Obstacles to …

Dorchester: The Community Teaches, A Resource Book Of Information And Activities, Institute For Learning & Teaching, University Of Massachusetts Boston
Institute for Learning and Teaching Publications
We have prepared this manual of resources and activities so that Dorchester teachers and children can explore their community. We have done so in the belief that community studies can be a valuable addition to the curriculum. They involve children in thinking about and taking part in the affairs of their community. Through community studies, children in the process of becoming citizens can learn how to participate in and have an impact on their community. In this time of widespread apathy, despair, and resignation about community problems, education for citizenship is a top priority.
When children are learning about their …
