The Cost Of Caring: An Investigation In The Effects Of Teaching Traumatized Children In Urban Elementary Settings, Anthony C. Hill
The Cost Of Caring: An Investigation In The Effects Of Teaching Traumatized Children In Urban Elementary Settings, Anthony C. Hill
Open Access Dissertations
This study investigates the “the cost of caring” (Figley, 1995) for educators who teach and work with traumatized children; that is children who live in challenging social environments with ongoing stressors, such as family physical abuse, sexual assault, neglect, community violence, bereavement and loss issues, parental mental health and substance abuse, and homelessness. This study examines the theoretical framework of Secondary Traumatic Stress (STS). The phenomenon of STS has been investigated in depth for professionals, such as social workers, counselors/therapists, hotline/crisis workers, law enforcement officers, nurses, emergency medical technicians/paramedics, firefighters, and disaster relief workers (Bride et al, 2007). This study …
The Forgotten Voices Behind Designated Diversity Initiatives: Perspectives From Students Of Color Living In A Multicultural Residential Community, Kathy Sisneros
Open Access Dissertations
Colleges and universities have become increasingly diverse since Brown .v Board of Education requiring that institutions figure out how to manage a more racially diverse student body. Unfortunately, many predominantly White institutions (PWIs) continue to fall short in attending to the specific needs for students of color to feel included and supported. The primary purpose of this study is to learn more about how students of color experience and make meaning of cross-racial relationships in designated multicultural program. I intend to specifically focus on the experiences of students of color who have self-selected to live in a designated multicultural community. …
The Effects Of Multiple External Mandates On Curriculum, Pedagogy And Child Activity In The Preschool Classroom, Kathleen A. Strub-Richards
The Effects Of Multiple External Mandates On Curriculum, Pedagogy And Child Activity In The Preschool Classroom, Kathleen A. Strub-Richards
Open Access Dissertations
Within the last decade, the pressures of implementing state mandated early learning guidelines and meeting the requirements from federal, state and local agencies, have taken their toll on many preschool programs. In the present study, preschool programs were given a chance to voice their opinions about how curriculum standards and other external mandates were directly and indirectly influencing curriculum planning, teaching practices, and child activity. A brief survey was sent to 90 preschool directors in a region in Massachusetts, 28 directors completed this survey. A sample of nine directors, from the survey respondents, volunteered to be interviewed. In two separate …
A Process Of Becoming: U.S. Born African American And Black Women In The Process Of Liberation From Internalized Racism, Tanya Ovea Williams
A Process Of Becoming: U.S. Born African American And Black Women In The Process Of Liberation From Internalized Racism, Tanya Ovea Williams
Open Access Dissertations
Internalized racism is a contributing factor to the inability of African Americans to overcome racism. (Speight, 2007) Because this is a cognitive phenomenon over which individuals can have agency, it is important to study, understand, and seek out ways that African Americans are able to gain a liberatory perspective in the midst of a racist society. By using colonization psychology and post-traumatic slave psychology to define the phenomenon, and Jackson’s Black identity development model theory to ground and analyze participants’ process of liberation, this study used phenomenological in-depth interviewing to understand the experiences of African American and Black women who …
Is Working Together Worth It? Examining The Relationship Between The Quality Of Teacher Collaboration, Instruction, And Student Achievement, Mark Francis Zito
Is Working Together Worth It? Examining The Relationship Between The Quality Of Teacher Collaboration, Instruction, And Student Achievement, Mark Francis Zito
Open Access Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of a three-year Professional Learning Community (PLC) staff development initiative that took place in a suburban school district in Connecticut. An operational definition for PLCs was developed. This definition may prove beneficial for future research on PLCs. A comprehensive review of the current literature base was conducted, including the detailed examination of one earlier literature review (Vescio et al., 2008) and six empirical studies which examined the relationship between PLC-like initiatives and student performance. The present study builds upon the relevant literature base, specifically by attempting to determine the relationship …
Organizational Decision Making And Goal Setting In Out-Of-School-Time Programs, Jenny Rebecca Hemmingson
Organizational Decision Making And Goal Setting In Out-Of-School-Time Programs, Jenny Rebecca Hemmingson
Open Access Dissertations
Currently, there is a large body of research examining Out-of-School Time (OST) programs, the goals of these programs, and their reported impact on the youth they serve.
However, there is little evidence of research on how organizations determine which goals best fit the needs of the communities they serve. Concurrently, studies of how organizations put these goals into action are virtually non-existent in the literature.
This study examines how organizations in Massachusetts receiving federal 21st Century Community Learning Center funding make decisions about Out-of-School Time programming. Although the federal grant requirements and the Massachusetts Department of Education impose some uniformity …

Science Boot Camp For Librarians – A Five Campus Collaboration., Naka J. Ishii, Elizabeth Winiarz, Marion Muskiewicz
Naka J Ishii
Presentation at the ACRL New England Chapter annual conference, 13 May 2011 with with Marion Muskiewicz (UMass Lowell) and Elizabeth Winiarz (UMass Dartmouth) on the inception and collaborative creation of an annual "boot camp" for science librarians. This inexpensive and intensive program covers 3 science subjects over 2.5 days to bring librarians up to speed on these topics. Usually, one faculty member gives an overview of the field, and another describes a current research area. This event also provides librarians with an informal way to network and enjoy each other's company.
Beyond School Inputs And Resources: An Assessment Of The Effects Of Program Intervention On Learning Achievement In Rebep Schools In Sierra Leone, Aiah As Mbayo
Open Access Dissertations
The EFA conference in Dakar 2000 ushered in new momentum for ensuring universal access to education and advocacy for improved educational quality in all aspects (UNESCO, 2000). While significant progress has been made in expanding access in sub-Saharan Africa, particularly for girls, efforts to ensure improved educational quality in terms of learning, have not matched the drive for universal educational access. Rather, educational quality in most countries in sub-Saharan Africa has been seriously compromised by rapid expansion given the limited resources.
In many attempts to ensure the delivery of quality education in developing countries, the thrust of delivery strategies has …

How The Chameleon Overcame Its Complex: Engage And The Formation Of A Prefigurative Social Movement, Philip W. Mangis
How The Chameleon Overcame Its Complex: Engage And The Formation Of A Prefigurative Social Movement, Philip W. Mangis
Master's Capstone Projects
U.S. students who participate in justice-oriented study abroad programs face great challenges reintegrating to life in the United States. In addition to working through culture shock, these students ultimately confront the dilemma of putting into practice a newfound transformed worldview that runs counter to hegemonic norms. Faced with the challenge of negotiating this dissonance, students can choose to blend in and conform to the status quo while struggling internally with their un-actualized perspective transformation – like a chameleon with a complex – or they can find ways to resist assimilation by acting on their transformation and taking action in the …
Atlas Program Profile Analysis Framework Data From: Adult Transitions Longitudinal Study, Laura Gluck
Atlas Program Profile Analysis Framework Data From: Adult Transitions Longitudinal Study, Laura Gluck
Master's Capstone Projects
This paper explores the theoretical basis and past research exploring what helps adults to learn effectively in the Adult Basic Education (ABE) setting. Information on eleven ABE-to-college transition programs was compiled through the Adult Transitions Longitudinal Study (ATLAS) data collection. Statistical analyses of the resulting program-level variables were conducted to examine their effect on transition course participants’ college outcomes. Four of the twelve variables analyzed were found to significantly impact the likelihood of participants enrolling in college and successfully earning at least three credits: 1) whether the program uses grades versus pass/fail marks; 2) whether the program has a documented …
Does Parenting Predict Child Relational Aggression?, Nastassja A. Marshall
Does Parenting Predict Child Relational Aggression?, Nastassja A. Marshall
Masters Theses 1911 - February 2014
Relational aggression is associated with significant psychosocial consequences for children including anxiety, depression, and delinquency. Few research studies have examined the relationship between parenting and childhood relational aggression. Furthermore, only one previous published investigation has examined the relationship between observed parenting and child relational aggression. The current study examined the relationship between six observed parenting factors (laxness, overreactivity, negative affect, disparagement, problem-solving, and positive emotional support) and teacher-reported relational aggression. Forty-six children, mainly of European-American and Puerto-Rican descent, between 7 and 10 years old (M = 8.29, SD = .75), participated in the study. Observational data from a discipline …
Subversive Representations Of Education In Francophone Novels Of The Colonial Maghreb, Whitney Bevill
Subversive Representations Of Education In Francophone Novels Of The Colonial Maghreb, Whitney Bevill
Masters Theses 1911 - February 2014
Much work exploring alterity and hybridity in the Maghreb ignores representations of education which confront seminal formative experiences, specifically education. French colonial education was problematic because it granted access to the colonizer’s culture, yet it also created a rupture in self-identity for Maghrebi students. In this thesis, I interrogate the literary representations of sites and sources of education by analyzing how these representations discuss the tension between formal French education and informal Maghrebi education.
My thesis begins with a historical overview of colonial education in the Maghreb. I then discuss literary methods of negotiating identity, contrasting Arab and Western autobiography …
Schoolyard Renovations In The Context Of Urban Greening: Insight From The Boston Schoolyard Initiative, Boston, Massachusetts, Katherine A. Tooke
Schoolyard Renovations In The Context Of Urban Greening: Insight From The Boston Schoolyard Initiative, Boston, Massachusetts, Katherine A. Tooke
Masters Theses 1911 - February 2014
Twenty years ago the public schoolyards in Boston, Massachusetts were in a deplorable state: most were entirely paved, seriously neglected and used predominantly for parking. Since 1995, the Boston Schoolyards Initiative (BSI) has worked to transform these spaces into vibrant environments of recreation and learning. Renovations typically include adding play structures, gardens, murals and seating that can engage children at recess or support an educational activity. Recent research has shown that BSI renovations have had a positive impact on student academic performance (Lopez, Jennings and Campbell, 2008), but little attention has yet focused on how these revived and greened spaces …

Colloids and Emulsions.
These materials are very common and are amenable to some nice demonstrations, yet are not part of the usual curriculum. Topics include surface tension (and why droplets are spherical; why shaving cream acts like a solid even though it's made of liquid and gas); Brownian motion and the microscopic origin of heat; the behavior of many particles (phase transitions, how colloidal particles can spontaneously order themselves – an accurate demonstration of how water molecules form ice crystals); what is inside everyday materials.

Gender, Work Time, And Care Responsibilities Among Faculty, Joya Misra, Jennifer H. Lundquist
Gender, Work Time, And Care Responsibilities Among Faculty, Joya Misra, Jennifer H. Lundquist
Dr. Jennifer H. Lundquist
This study explores how faculty at one research-intensive university spend their time on research, teaching, mentoring, and service, as well as housework, childcare, care for elders, and other long-term care. Drawing on surveys and focus group interviews with faculty, the article examines how gender is related to time spent on the different components of faculty work, as well as on housework and care. Findings show that many faculty report working more than 60 hours a week, with substantial time on weekends devoted to work. Finding balance between different kinds of work (research, teaching, mentoring, and service) is as difficult as …
Responding To “Innocent” Racism: Educating Teachers In Politically Reflexive And Dialogic Engagement In Local Communities, Fatima Pirbhai-Illich, Theresa Y. Austin, Patricia Paugh, Yvonne Farino
Responding To “Innocent” Racism: Educating Teachers In Politically Reflexive And Dialogic Engagement In Local Communities, Fatima Pirbhai-Illich, Theresa Y. Austin, Patricia Paugh, Yvonne Farino
Theresa Y. Austin
This article develops the construct of ―innocent racism‖ and argues for keeping questions of race central in teacher education. The authors report three cases in which they, teacher educators working within a school/university alliance, identified and addressed racism in their courses. We situate our analyses within antiracist research informed by Critical Race Theory (CRT) where the teacher education students and ourselves struggled to recognize and address racism. Critical episodes are reflectively analyzed to challenge both teacher educators‘ and teachers‘ beliefs. We demonstrate how race still matters because of the ways in which it intersects with our practices. Examples of struggles …
Revisiting Collaborative Boundaries-Pioneering Change In Perspectives And Relations Of Power, Francis Bangou, Theresa Y. Austin
Revisiting Collaborative Boundaries-Pioneering Change In Perspectives And Relations Of Power, Francis Bangou, Theresa Y. Austin
Theresa Y. Austin
In this article, we examine collaboration as a situated practice that defies a prescriptive definition mainly located in the interpersonal relations of professionals. We argue that collaboration does not merely depend upon “good” will or professionalism, rather interacts complexly with racial expectations that have been cultivated in institutions where racism is manifested in subtle ways. We use Critical Race Theory (Ladson-Billings & Tate, 1995) to examine how we as 2 different pairs of teacher educators in innovative programs in different sites faced racial tensions through our co-teaching experiences. Each racially diverse pair consisted of a more senior faculty member and …

Certifying Adult Education Staff And Faculty, Cristine Smith, R. Gomez
Center for International Education Faculty Publications
The Council for Advancement of Adult Literacy (CAAL) commissioned this paper to help inform a CAAL Roundtable in New York City in June 2010. It examines three broad questions: (1) What adult education “certification and credentialing” systems for teachers and staff are currently in use in the U.S. (in terms of standards, requirements, and mechanisms)? (2) What benefits could a comprehensive adult education certification system have—for learners, teachers, and institutions? And (3), based on current practice and understanding, what steps might be taken to further examine difficult issues and develop a comprehensive certification system if one is desired?
