What follows is an attempt to document the Gender Issues in Development course in an effort to give those who wish to teach it a base from which to draw upon. The teaching of the course is an organic process, in which the roots remain similar (using a feminist analysis to look at development and education, looking at the interplay between theory and practice, including traditionally marginalized voices and knowledges, and acknowledging the wealth of knowledges about the development process available from class participants) while the branches are dependent upon facilitators expertise and interests.
Having taken the course in 1991 ...

The rate and extent of deforestation in the Philippines is phenomenal. It has been estimated that in 1934, 17 million hectares of the Philippines' 30 million hectares were covered in forest (Asian Development Bank, pp. 13-14.) This figure had dropped to 10.5 million by 1969, and by 1993 it stood at 5.7 million. If one looks at old growth forests, where there is the greatest diversity of animal, plant, and insect life, then the figures are even more stark: In 1934, there were 11 million hectares of old growth forest; in 1969, 4.7 million; and by 1993 ...

Basic and NonFormal Education Systems (BANFES) Project
There are no outstanding evaluation recommendations at Component II (NTTC), so I have chosen to report my work by logframe outputs, using the question and answer format developed by the Project Evaluation Office for conducting interviews and collecting data on initiatives which were not otherwise evaluated. The second section relates my work to the relevant contractual obligations. Finally, I attempt to summarize what has been accomplished, and to reflect on the current situation and possible directions for the future.
My work with BANFES in Lesotho covers the period beginning in September 1985 and concluding in February 1991. Throughout this period ...

Master's Capstone Projects
The objective of this project is to examine the negative effects of the current formal educational policy in Cape Verde and to recommend to the Ministry of Education some educational alternatives in order to deal with the out-of-school youth's problem in the country.
Problem: The Legal system places outside secondary school the young who are considered overage (16 years old and above) to get her/his first application.
actually and annually approximately one thousand young people leave middle school without possibility to pursue their secondary education. Generally, speaking, the out-of-school youths belong to the socially and economically disadvantaged population ...

An Evaluation Of Non-Formal Education In Ecuador, Donald A. Swanson
Non-Formal Education
A logical place to begin this study was to list objectives from the original contract. The University of Massachusetts/USAID contract for this Project had some explicit objectives and contractual agreements are briefly outlined here so that we have a common background for discussing merits of this project. They are:
- Create and field test a range of non-formal educational techniques using local institutions to implement and support these techniques in field situation.
- Develop a number of non-formal educational methodologies which are feasible for use by existing Ecuadorean institutions.
- Implement selected methodologies with institutions, including the Ministry of Education, with on-going ...
