These are primarily first years and the objective is to bring them into the community and for them to think about tourism in this context. The aim of the study was to explore the views and experiences of students in a Social Science department in an institute of higher education. All undergraduate students were surveyed using a structured questionnaire. 258 valid questionnaire were returned and analysed to ascertain students’ opinions on the purpose of assessment, how prepared they felt for assessments, their experiences and views of formative feedback and their reactions to grades. This assessment is the oral component of the language module. The assessment takes place in small groups throughout the module instead of one on one at the end of the module. This helps students who are often very nervous in the traditional oral and it also allows them to improve as they engage in a number of small assessments. As they discuss issues in a group they benefit from peer knowledge and experience.

This assessment on e-tourism asks students to evaluate the e-tourism strategies of a particular destination. Students are broken into groups of 4-5 and all have to participate in all tasks. The wiki style allows the lecturer to see exactly who is contributing to what extent. It also encourages collaboration and students like it as it is something new.
