Academic Leaders And Faculty Developers: Creating An Institutional Culture That Values Teaching, Mary Deane Sorcinelli, Norman D. Aitken

In recent years, a great deal has been said and written about the need to improve teaching in the academy, especially in large research universities. College presidents, national associations representing higher education, private foundations, and individual faculty scholars all have challenged faculty, chairs, deans, campus administrators, and faculty developers to work together to improve support for undergraduate teaching and learning (Bok, 1986; Bowen & Schuster, 1986; Boyer, 1987; Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, 1989; Diamond & Adam, 1993; Seldin & Associates, 1990). Despite such calls for collaborative efforts to improve undergraduate education, faculty developers still often feel alone …

A Khaldunian Perspective On The Dynamics Of Asiatic Societies, Syed Farid Alatas

During the last twenty years or so, scholars in the Third World began to become critical of what came to be known as the captive mind. The captive mind is uncritical and imitative in its approach to ideas and concepts from the West.' Discussions on the problem of mental captivity coincided with efforts to indigenous the social sciences in the post-war period when most of the Third World gained formal independence.
The Paradox Of Ideology, Justin Schwartz
The Paradox Of Ideology, Justin Schwartz
Justin Schwartz
A standard problem with the objectivity of social scientific theory in particular is that it is either self-referential, in which case it seems to undermine itself as ideology, or self-excepting, which seem pragmatically self-refuting. Using the example of Marx and his theory of ideology, I show how self-referential theories that include themselves in their scope of explanation can be objective. Ideology may be roughly defined as belief distorted by class interest. I show how Marx thought that natural science was informed by class interest but not therefore necessarily ideology. Capitalists have an interest in understanding the natural world (to a …
Functional Explanation And Metaphysical Individualism, Justin Schwartz
Functional Explanation And Metaphysical Individualism, Justin Schwartz
Justin Schwartz
A number of (present or former) analytical Marxists, such as Jon Elster, have argued that functional explanation has almost no place in the social sciences. (Although the discussion is framed in terms of a debate among analytical Marxists, the point is quite general, and Marxism is used for illustrative purposes.) Functional explanation accounts for what is to be explained by reference to its function; thus, sighted organism have eyes because eyes enable them to see. Elster and other critics of functional explanation argue that this pattern of explanation is inconsistent with "methodological individualism," the idea, as they understand it, that …

Strategic Planning: Key Environment Indicators For Pennsylvania, Carole A. George
Strategic Planning: Key Environment Indicators For Pennsylvania, Carole A. George
Carole A. George
Now that the State Board of Education has adopted new regulations requiring all school districts to develop a strategic plan, it seems useful to describe the role of demographic information in that planning process. This Pennsylvania Educational Policy Studies (PEPS) report provides a rationale for considering information regarding key environmental factors in the district's strategic planning process. The factors considered include those representing the family environment, the community, and the possible competition from non-public schools. This paper also describes ways in which Pennsylvania's school districts vary with respect to these demographic factors, and how the latest version of PEPS PC …

From Libertarianism To Egalitarianism, Justin Schwartz
From Libertarianism To Egalitarianism, Justin Schwartz
Justin Schwartz
A standard natural rights argument for libertarianism is based on the labor theory of property: the idea that I own my self and my labor, and so if I "mix" my own labor with something previously unowned or to which I have a have a right, I come to own the thing with which I have mixed by labor. This initially intuitively attractive idea is at the basis of the theories of property and the role of government of John Locke and Robert Nozick. Locke saw and Nozick agreed that fairness to others requires a proviso: that I leave "enough …

Cultural Influences And Reflective Practice: A Chicano Perspective, Heriberto Godina Phd
Heriberto Godina PhD
This review of research examines improving educational curriculum through reflective practice influenced by minority culture. Examples of Chicano and indigenous culture are cited. The implications of a poorly educated and growing minority group population indicate the need for reflective awareness in curriculum and challenges the established policies imposed by the majority culture. Reflective qualitative research, and holistic education is perceived to be a viable solution to the inadequate curriculum imposed upon minority culture.

Strategic Planning In Academe, Frank Cortez Flores
Strategic Planning In Academe, Frank Cortez Flores

American higher education has been in a state of transition and upheaval since the founding of Harvard College in 1636, which is generally credited with the beginning of higher education in America. However, in an era of rapidly accelerating change, higher educational institutions today are confronted with a crisis of purpose, erosion of traditional values, declining public support, increasing competition for scarce resources, demands for accountability and a struggle for survival. At no time in the history of American higher education has it been more important for decision makers in colleges and universities to understand the dynamics of strategic planning …

The Deanship: A Dimension Of Academic Leadership, Frank Cortez Flores

The description in the literature of effective academic leaders is that these leaders are trustworthy, have a clear vision of their school's future, and are able to inspire a shared vision among divergent individuals and groups (Bennis and Norris, 1985). According to Dibden (1968), academic deans are concerned with the effective functioning of an educational unit, promoting scholarship among faculty, facilitating the development of academic programs that expand the intellect of students, and managing the academic budget. A prime assumption of this brief study is, arguably, as the chief administrative officer in an academic program, the dean is essential to …
Fund Raising In American Higher Education, Frank Cortez Flores
Fund Raising In American Higher Education, Frank Cortez Flores
Frank Cortez Flores
Philanthropic support of American higher education has a long tradition and the largest portion of that philanthropy has historically been directed to private institutions. However, both public and private higher educational institutions are confronted with serious questions concerning their financial stability. These institutions are considering alternative sources of funds. Therefore, it is important to investigate and analyze methods of increasing philanthropy to American higher education.

Engaging The Spectrum: Civic Virtue And The Protection Of Student Voice In School-Sponsored Forums, Robert R.M. Verchick
Robert R.M. Verchick
This article suggests a new justification for protecting student speech that specifically addresses the need for free expression and inquiry in school- sponsored forums. Starting with the proposition that student speech prepares one for self-government, I suggest we re-define the kind of self-government to which we ask students to aspire. By recasting our conception of democracy in a way that highlights universal participation and group transformation, we will find a theory of government much closer to the values of group discovery and social reform.

As one aspect of a study on faculty career development, relations between work and life away from work were explored for one hundred and twelve faculty. Analyses focused on the degree to which experiences and/or feelings associated with work directly colored or "spilled over" to life outside of work and vice versa. Differences by gender and rank also were examined.

Commentary: The Role Of Intrapersonal Psychological Variables In Academic School Learning, Gregory J. Boyle
Commentary: The Role Of Intrapersonal Psychological Variables In Academic School Learning, Gregory J. Boyle
Gregory J. Boyle
Intellectual abilities may contribute up to 25% of the variance in measures of academic school learning. However, the role of intrapersonal variables other than cognitive ability (personality traits, motivational dynamic factors, transitory emotional states) has usually been considered as fairly trivial. Past research, to the contrary, suggests that under stressful conditions, the relative contribution of such intrapersonal factors may even become predominant in influencing achievement. When analyses are based on change scores rather than single-occasion measures (which include trait contamination variance), the influence of emotional states on learning is shown to be very significant indeed.
