‘Connecting The World Through Games’: Creating Shared Value In The Case Of Zynga’S Corporate Social Strategy, Laura Hartman, E. Mead, D. Christman, P. Werhane
Laura Hartman
When using cases to teach corporate strategy and ethical decision-making, the aim is demonstrate to students that leadership decision-making is at its most effective when all affected stakeholders are considered, from shareholders and employees, to the local, national, and global societies in which the company operates. This paper challenges the obstructive perception of many Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) advocates that the interests of private organizations in the alleviation of social problems should not be vested, but instead should originate from charitable purposes. We evaluate an alternative approach to the role of business in contributing to social progress - Creating Shared …

Beyond “Talent, Technology And Tolerance”: What Are The Lessons For Education In The Future?, Marie Parker Jenkins Prof., Patricia Mannix Mcnamara Dr.
Dr. Patricia Mannix McNamara
Richard Florida, an American theorist has argued that in the future we need to develop three things: Talent, Technology and Tolerance. Using this framework to inform our discussion, we examine key issues concerning policy and practice to support education for the future. This will be informed by perspectives drawing on British and Irish contexts and what these two States tell us about current issues. Global concerns over raising the academic attainment of all children for employability; responding to cultural diversity in the classroom; and having access to knowledge which informs young peoples choices are the three underpinning themes. We problematise …
Book Review Of "Culture, Curriculum, And Identity In Education" By H. Richard Milner (Ed.) (2010), New York, Palgrave Mcmilla., Edward Shizha
Book Review Of "Culture, Curriculum, And Identity In Education" By H. Richard Milner (Ed.) (2010), New York, Palgrave Mcmilla., Edward Shizha
Edward Shizha
Identity involves different facets of human self-definition and is unequivocally a vital element of individuals’ lives, especially in diverse societies. Culture and identity are intertwined. In education, culture in the curriculum plays a vital component in students’ identity formations. Supportive school environments provide socially, culturally and linguistically appropriate curricula that legitimize identity formations. Teachers and the curricula they teach are sources of identity formation. Every classroom encounter is largely dictated by the teacher’s role and the perception the teacher has of the students.

The Kodaly Method In The Twenty First Century, Sharon Lierse
The Kodaly Method In The Twenty First Century, Sharon Lierse
Dr. Sharon Lierse
Music methodologies provide educators with a defined curriculum which transpires students to a level of musical proficiency. They are often designed for young children and can be adapted to different cultures. The Kod_a_ly Method was developed in Hungary during the 1940s and is based on the premise that children should acquire music skills from an early age. It was first used in Hungarian schools and subsequently has been used in training institutions around the world. Since the implementation of the Kod_a_ly Method there have been many social, economic and political developments which have impacted arts and education. A group of …

The Interface Of Neoliberal Globalization, Science Education And Indigenous African Knowledges In Africa, Edward Shizha
The Interface Of Neoliberal Globalization, Science Education And Indigenous African Knowledges In Africa, Edward Shizha
Edward Shizha
In a globalized neo-colonial world, an insidious and often debilitating crisis of knowledge construction and legitimation does not only continue to undermine the local and indigenous knowledge systems, but it also perpetuates a neo-colonial and oppressive socio-cultural science educational system that debilitates the social and cultural identity of the indigenous African student. As Schissel and Wotherspoon (2003: vii) argue, "Educational relations are critical elements of our humanity and sociability." This paper explores the homogenizing effects of globalization and the oppressive forces of neo-colonialism that continue to work together to privilege "western-based scientific knowledge" at the expense of indigenous knowledge systems. …
The Biology Of Reality Testing - Implications For Cognitive Education, Neil Greenberg
The Biology Of Reality Testing - Implications For Cognitive Education, Neil Greenberg
Neil Greenberg
• This report explores the proposition that teaching effectiveness can be enhanced by accommodating the key differences between two complementary and deeply engrained modes of reality testing, each predominantly centered in different hemispheres of the brain. • (1) Correspondence involves “reality-testing” of a percept, the cerebral representation of an experience in the world. • (2) Coherence involves “textualizing”, that is, reality-testing of a percept by how easily it relates to previous and ongoing parallel and collateral experiences. • Confidence in the validity of any percept throughout development is related to the interplay of these key processes. • As organisms develop, …

Plan For Lakewood High School, Arthur Lang

Lakewood, New Jersey has a population approaching 100,000. It is perhaps the fasting growing and most vibrant city in the United States. Yet, its schools are in decline. No outsider, no professor of education, and no researcher will completely solve the problem. Lakewood is unique. The economic, political, and moral vitality of Lakewood, with its world renown for learning, is not at all focused on the Lakewood School District, but on its independent district, which is growing at a staggering eighteen percent annually. One thousand new homes are built and 2,000 babies are born each year to families who have …

Self-Study Leveraging: The Qpc Model For Comprehensive Academic Program Review., Jamie Comstock, Kathy Booker
Jayne Marie Comstock
The past twenty years have brought about a paradigm shift in higher education. During that time, we have changed our focus from what we want to teach to what students need to learn. The academy's position of unassailable authority has been usurped by public cries for transparency, accountability, quality assurance, and quality improvement. To cut expenses, and therefore deter the rising cost of postsecondary education, institutions have borrowed best business practices and started focusing on productivity, efficiency, and reallocating resources.

Language And Graffiti Of Exceptional Individuals In West Africa, Dr Williams Emeka Obiozor
Dr Williams Emeka Obiozor
This paper establishes the place of language and graffiti practiced by exceptional individuals in the interpretation of family values, the preservation of culture and traditional heritage of the Igbo community in Southeastern Nigeria. The paper also takes a cursory look at graffiti art and exceptionality in a time when the Igbo tradition and culture were highly respected, jealously guarded and deep-rooted in the heart and soul of its people. Graffiti creations by exceptional individuals transfer both oral and visual education to documented tradition; for societal knowledge and awareness, individual wisdom, expressions against repression, pride and recognition of Igbo language and …

The Cultural Approaches To Multiculturalism: Education Policy And Its Implications In Culture, Linda Margaret Broughton

The purpose of this discussion is to analyse three different European states in their approaches to education policy and culture. Each example of a national policy approach is considered separately, as an individual container (or thimble) with a distinct approach to policymaking and culture that is reflected through structure and content. At the same time, the discussion will analyse the comparative advantages of the separate systems in order to illustrate how one approach may address an issue that is problematic in another approach. The purpose of this discourse is to illustrate how a more comprehensive approach to culture in education …
Reflections On Educational Administration, Arthur Lang
Reflections On Educational Administration, Arthur Lang
Arthur Lang
I began my graduate studies in the spring, 2005 and finished in spring, 2007. Over those two and a half years, I have transformed my view of education. I have developed a vision and implemented changes in my own instruction. I learned what educators mean by change and have embraced its benefits. I realized that the school is not an isolated institution, but must seek outside support and enlist all members of the community. Most importantly, I learned that principals are not managers, but instructional leaders who lead by doing.

The No Child Left Behind Act [NCLB] mandates testing of all high school students in reading, mathematics and science. Schools that do not make progress in test scores will be subject to punitive and remedial actions. Schools have responded to the high stakes requirements by modifying the traditional curriculum. The purpose of this study is to determine how achievement measure by grade point earned in mathematics and language arts courses correlates to proficiency on the New Jersey High School proficiency Assessment (HSPA). Since data is not yet available the Science assessment, it has been left out of this study. A …

The success of organizations is the result of a combination of factors: financial, material and technological resources, logistics, and human capital.
These factors are put together to achieve the desired goals consistent with the corporate mission. In this context, firms are in constant seeking of the best individuals who will lead and carry out this journey to success. These individuals are expected to have special characteristics that ensure that their actions will turn out into positive results for the organization. These extraordinary individuals are the leaders.

Small Schools are schools within schools, autonomous of their district and the larger school building principal in which they reside. They are distinct from one another, focused and committed to equity. They are made up of an interdisciplinary team of teachers that share a few hundred or less students in common for instruction. Giving students an opportunity to engage in the construction industry in their home-town will integrate real-world skills into their study of mathematics and connect their lives to their schools and community, making achievment and graduation more meaningful.

The No Child Left Behind Act [NCLB] mandates testing of all high school students in reading and mathematics by school year 2005-06 and in science by school year 2007-08. Schools are required to make incremental increases in test scores in all students, including minority students, poor children, students with disabilities, and English language learners, setting one hundred percent proficiency as its goal by 2014. Schools that do not make progress in test scores will be subject to punitive and remedial actions.

This study has been undertaken as a project in an Educational Philosophy course. I decided to observe our department chair to learn how I too can properly teach my students to pass the New Jersey mandated High School Proficiency Test (HSPA). The results are a stunning documentation of how education is affected by the federal No Child Left Behind Act.
