Assessment Of Educational Expectations, Outcomes And Benefits From Small Satellite Program Participation, Jeremy Straub, Ronald Marsh Aug 2014

Assessment Of Educational Expectations, Outcomes And Benefits From Small Satellite Program Participation, Jeremy Straub, Ronald Marsh

Jeremy Straub

This paper begins to characterize the educational outcomes that can be produced from student participation in a small spacecraft development program. We asked students what benefits they expected to receive from program participation and we asked them, at the end of the semester, what benefits they had received. We also characterized student performance through the use of post-participation Likert-like scale questions and the use of a widely-used questionnaire for assessing student research participation outcomes. We compare benefit expectation and attainment, characterize the level of benefits received across multiple types of participation and assess the effect of program participation on subject-specific …

Classroom Polling Software For Use With Mobile And Web-Based Devices, Nick Renford, Jeremy Straub, Scott Kerlin Apr 2014

Classroom Polling Software For Use With Mobile And Web-Based Devices, Nick Renford, Jeremy Straub, Scott Kerlin

Jeremy Straub

The goal of this project is to create an interface for Android, iOS, and Win-dows Phone smartphones, as well as a web interface that will act as a “clicker”. The instructors will be able to send out questions, and the students will be able to answer the questions, and get feedback if the instructor wants them to have it. The teacher can decide whether the feedback is instant or manually initiated, and what format the response will be, whether it includes the correct answer, and what type of chart, if any, indicating the most com-monly selected answer(s). There will be …

Towards An Analytical Framework For Evaluating Student Learning In Computer Science Courses, Jeremy Straub, Tom Stokke, Scott Kerlin Apr 2014

Towards An Analytical Framework For Evaluating Student Learning In Computer Science Courses, Jeremy Straub, Tom Stokke, Scott Kerlin

Jeremy Straub

This poster presents an overview of ongoing work in the Computer Science Department to assess the learning oc-curring in multiple undergraduate courses in an analytical manner which will facilitate semester-to-semester and in-stitution-to-institution comparisons. It describes the types of assessments created (which are course-specific based on ACM model content areas identified as covered by the instructor), their use, data analysis and the conclu-sions which can be drawn. Limited initial data is also pre-sented.

The Use Of The Roofsat For Computer Science And Engineering Education, Jeremy Straub, Ronald Marsh Mar 2014

The Use Of The Roofsat For Computer Science And Engineering Education, Jeremy Straub, Ronald Marsh

Jeremy Straub

This poster presents an overview of a tool that has been created to provide students with real-world experience in the design, development and operation of control and scientific mission software for a cyber-physical system. The ROOFSAT, developed at UND, is a low-cost analog for a small spacecraft (though in many ways these capabilities also enable similar UAV work). The ROOFSAT was constructed with approximately $1,500 generously provided by the John D. Odegard School of Aerospace Sciences out of commercially-available parts. It includes multiple cameras, a pan-tilt mount and the same space-qualified computer hardware which has been used on both spacecraft …

Teaching Localization: 6 Practices That Make A Difference (Part Ii), Uwe Muegge Feb 2014

Teaching Localization: 6 Practices That Make A Difference (Part Ii), Uwe Muegge

Uwe Muegge

Translation memory (TM) systems have become commonplace in today’s translation courses – sometimes for the wrong reasons. If students are told that the only reason for using a translation memory is to leverage previous translations, these students will not use a TM system for non-repetitive texts. That teaching approach might also be frustrating for students who start with an empty translation memory, as these students may not get any immediate benefit from using TM technology. If, however, students are introduced to the translation memory as a quality assurance tool, the return on investment is instant.

There Is The Need Of Technical & Entrepreneural Education In Africa To Produce Job Creators And Not Job Seekers, George E. Ekeha Jan 2014

There Is The Need Of Technical & Entrepreneural Education In Africa To Produce Job Creators And Not Job Seekers, George E. Ekeha

George E Ekeha

Education is the gateway to today's economic drive and therefore the various educational policies in Africa must be tailor made to help achieve the needed economic development. Many African countries are saddle with youth unemployment and these has variously culminated into violence demonstrations against governments across Africa. There are many schools across Africa who trained student as job-seekers and very few are equipped with the entrepreneurial skills and mindset to create employment for themselves and others in their communities. This article looks at the current educational standards in Ghana and its effects on the capabilities of young graduates to impact …

Extending And Accelerating Global Business-Education Partnerships, Dylan Kissane, John Farrell Jan 2014

Extending And Accelerating Global Business-Education Partnerships, Dylan Kissane, John Farrell

Dylan Kissane

Senior management in contemporary graduate business education must respond are the trends that are leaving a marked impact on the traditional business models of business schools. Key stakeholders in the business education ecosystem, including the students, the corporate employers and the business schools themselves, demand more of graduate education in order that their respective careers flourish, future employees have the requisite skills and experience, and business education institutions survive. Yet as in any system, survival is but a minimum requirement; successful programs seek not only to survive but to thrive, embracing the change that these three trends place on graduate …

Spiritual Development And Education: A Sequential Mixed-Methods Approach, Russell Yocum Jan 2014

Spiritual Development And Education: A Sequential Mixed-Methods Approach, Russell Yocum

Russell Yocum

Building upon autoethnographically generated data and Maslow’s writings, a Spiritual Needs=Motivation=Volition Framework was constructed and subsequently validated via a sequential mixed-methods research design. A Likert-type survey instrument was developed and distributed to 139 undergraduate student respondents to quantitatively describe the relationships between the components of the framework. Respondents whose survey answers indicated that spirituality played a role in their lives were then invited to participate in one-on-one and focus group interviews to further clarify the relationships of the framework components and help develop a more phenomenological understanding of spirituality and its intersection with education.
