This session will review the change in philosophy of higher education in the United States from being available only to those that could afford college to the open access and success agenda of today. The influence of the Land Grant colleges and now the community colleges to fulfill this philosophy will be presented. Using the high interest level of the Olympics as a theme, this Power Point begins with uncaptioned photographs representing different sports and scenes from the Olympics. Audience members are asked to talk in small groups and then share out about different ways that scene might be related to college and career readiness. When sharing out is completed with the last slide, the slides are repeated a second time, this time on auto-timer and with a caption that tells a story. A third transition, brings up one of the slides (providing students with the equipment) to segue into a training exercise.

This Power Point presentation accompanies the webinar that was conducted for attendees of the OSCA-NOSCA Workshops in the Winter/Spring of 2012 to provide an opportunity for further discussion of how the Eight Components and Parent/Family/Community Partnership materials that were received can be utilized to transform counseling practice and create a college-going culture in one's school/district/community. It provided time to share best practices, ask questions and share concerns and in general, more fully reflect on and digest the many topics that were introduced at the workshop.

At the Counselor Roundtable Session, held on Tuesday, January 24th at the Columbus Renaissance Hotel, attendees were presented, in no particular order, with a list of ten “Hot Topics” to discuss. In the interest of time, attendees voted for the five topics they were most interested in discussing and those are listed below the master list, in order of interest level. Each topic was discussed for only 10 minutes with participants suggesting strategies/solutions. When possible, the person providing the idea/resource is listed by name and school.
