Plan For Lakewood High School, Arthur Lang Apr 2009

Plan For Lakewood High School, Arthur Lang

Arthur Lang

Lakewood, New Jersey has a population approaching 100,000. It is perhaps the fasting growing and most vibrant city in the United States. Yet, its schools are in decline. No outsider, no professor of education, and no researcher will completely solve the problem. Lakewood is unique. The economic, political, and moral vitality of Lakewood, with its world renown for learning, is not at all focused on the Lakewood School District, but on its independent district, which is growing at a staggering eighteen percent annually. One thousand new homes are built and 2,000 babies are born each year to families who have …

Equality, Race And Gifted Education: An Egalitarian Critique Of Admission To New York City's Specialized High Schools, Steven V. Mazie Apr 2009

Equality, Race And Gifted Education: An Egalitarian Critique Of Admission To New York City's Specialized High Schools, Steven V. Mazie

Steven V. Mazie

Educational programs for gifted students face both philosophical and practical challenges from egalitarians. Some object that gifted schools inherently undermine a commitment to equality in education, while others observe that schools for talented students cater to privileged youth and effectively discriminate against disadvantaged minorities. This article taps into recent theorizing on equality to explore an illuminating case study: admissions policies at New York City’s so-called ‘specialized’ high schools. After dismissing less nuanced proposals on both ends of the spectrum, I draw upon Elizabeth Anderson’s theory of ‘democratic egalitarianism’ to argue that, while schools devoted to talented students could be seen …

Using The Read (Reference Effort Assessment Data) Scale© To Assess Reference Work, Maira Bundza Mar 2009

Using The Read (Reference Effort Assessment Data) Scale© To Assess Reference Work, Maira Bundza

Maira Bundza

Surveys have shown that librarians are not completely satisfied with the statistics used for reference services, so Bella Karr Gerlich at Dominican University developed the READ (Reference Effort Assessment Data) Scale, which has now been tested by 14 academic libraries. In October 2008 the Central Reference Department at Western Michigan University Libraries started using the READ Scale to record reference transactions. Instead of just writing down tick marks for each question answered, each question was rated on a six-point scale, based on the difficulty of the question and the time it took to answer. This low-tech tool was easy to …

Mexican Higher Education At A Crossroads: Topics For A New Agenda In Public Policies, Jesús F. Galaz-Fontes, Manuel Gil-Antón, Laura E. Padilla-González, Juan J. Sevilla-García, Jorge G. Martínez-Stack, José L. Arcos-Vega

Jesús Francisco Galaz Fontes

After a period of unregulated growth from the 1960s to the late 1980s, public Mexican higher education came to be perceived as a "disaster zone" by the federal government. Starting at that point, several public policies seeking to improve its quality, social pertinence, efficiency and equity have implemented. While impacting positively Mexican higher education in many respects, such policies have had unintended negative effects and, it is contended, they are currently having diminishing gains. This paper identifies six topics that the next generation of public policies should consider if public Mexican higher education is to evolve into a stage in …

Interdisciplinary Industrial Ecology Education: Recommendations For An Inclusive Pedagogical Model, Archana Sharma Mar 2009

Interdisciplinary Industrial Ecology Education: Recommendations For An Inclusive Pedagogical Model, Archana Sharma

Archana Sharma

Industrial ecology education is being developed and delivered predominantly within the domains of engineering and management. Such an approach could prove somewhat limiting to the broader goal developing the industrial ecology as an integrated knowledge base inclusive of diverse disciplines in contributing to sustainable development. This paper hypothesizes that industrial ecology could be optimally delivered across broader disciplines if it were to be delivered as a supplemental knowledge among disciplines that engage with sustainable development education. Based on this hypothesis, a pedagogical experiment is devised and presented here. The paper is descriptive, reflective and exploratory in approach; the challenges embedded …

Taxonomy Of Business Ethics Theories, Grace S. Thomson Feb 2009

Taxonomy Of Business Ethics Theories, Grace S. Thomson

Dr. Grace S. Thomson

An increasing interest on ethics in business has resulted in a fruitful production of scholarly research that provides business leaders and decision-makers with references to bridge theory and practice (Cherry, Lee, and Chien, 2003). For an effective application of business ethics theories, it is necessary to comprehend their domains, their external and internal logic, and the specific applications to the ethical issues under analysis (Wempe, 2008).

This document presents a taxonomy of 11 ethical theories applied to business ethics that incorporate grounded theory and conceptual frameworks. As a basis for the construction of this taxonomy, the selection of the theories …

Aspiring To A Continuous Learning Ethic: Building Authentic Learning Communities For Faculty And Administration, William C. Frick, Joseph A. Polizzi, J. Edward Frick

Joseph A Polizzi Ph.D

An intentional, active and self-regulated approach to professional growth results in improved instruction and higher levels of student achievement over time. School systems that aspire to a continuous learning ethic socialize educators to act on the assumption that all students and all educators are capable of learning and reaching high standards. This article explores the emergence of the notion of a continuous learning ethic within sustainable educational reform, and the experiences of three school districts in introducing, nurturing and building collaborative learning for teachers, student-teachers and administrators. The central phenomenon explored in this article is the powerful role that sustained …

Do L2 Proficiency And L1 Reading Strategies Affect Persian Efl Learners’ Use Of Englishreading Strategies? Threshold Hypothesis Revisited, Mohammad Rahimi, Firooz Sadighi, Zahra Alimorad

Zahra Alimorad

Research in the area of reading comprehension strategies (RCSs) suggests that not all learners use these strategies in the same fashion and that various factors affect the type and frequency of the strategies used by second/foreign language learners. This study attempted to investigate the effect of two factors, namely, L2 proficiency and L1 reading strategies on the use of FL semantic and syntactic RCSs of Iranian university EFL learners. To this end, data were gathered form ninetyseven Persian learners. Results of the study indicated that L2 proficiency did not have any significant effect on the use of L2 semantic and …

Race, Interest Convergence, And Transfer Outcomes For Black Male Student Athletes, Shaun R. Harper, Ph.D.

Shaun R. Harper, Ph.D.

The purpose of this article is to consider the mutual benefits that could accrue for Black male student-athletes and the community colleges they attend if transfer rates to four-year institutions were strengthened. Critical Race Theory, specifically the Interest Convergence tenet, is introduced and used for explanatory sensemaking throughout the chapter.

Race-Conscious Student Engagement Practices And The Equitable Distribution Of Enriching Educational Experiences, Shaun R. Harper, Ph.D. Jan 2009

Race-Conscious Student Engagement Practices And The Equitable Distribution Of Enriching Educational Experiences, Shaun R. Harper, Ph.D.

Shaun R. Harper, Ph.D.

In this article, race-conscious student engagement is offered as an effective approach to narrowing racialized achievement disparities among college students, while simultaneously improving the experiences and outcomes of racial minority undergraduates. This version of student engagement is defined, and the mutual benefits it confers to students, educators, and predominantly white institutions are described in the article. But first, current racial gaps in the engagement of undergraduates are illuminated and discussed.

Access And Equity For African American Students In Higher Education: A Critical Race Historical Analysis Of Policy Efforts, Shaun R. Harper, Ph.D., Lori D. Patton, Ph.D., Ontario S. Wooden, Ph.D.

Shaun R. Harper, Ph.D.

Policies that have affected enrollments and degree attainment rates for African American students throughout the lifespan of higher education are analyzed in this article. Historically noteworthy progressive steps toward access and equity are juxtaposed with recent indicators of regression. Critical Race Theory is employed as an analytical framework for understanding how white supremacy and racist ideologies have shaped and undermined various policy efforts.

Niggers No More: A Critical Race Counternarrative On Black Male Student Achievement At Predominantly White Colleges And Universities, Shaun R. Harper, Ph.D. Jan 2009

Niggers No More: A Critical Race Counternarrative On Black Male Student Achievement At Predominantly White Colleges And Universities, Shaun R. Harper, Ph.D.

Shaun R. Harper, Ph.D.

A methodological approach popularized by critical race theorists is used in this article to oppose dominant discourse concerning the social and educational status of Black men in America. Specifically, this counternarrative on student achievement was derived from face-to-face individual interviews with 143 Black male undergraduates at 30 predominantly White colleges and universities across the USA. Exemplified via five composites constructed from the overall sample are resistant responses to subordination and racist stereotyping; confrontations with the cyclical reproduction of low expectations for Black male leadership and achievement; and an industrious rejection of what I refer to throughout the article as ‘niggering’. …

Die Opvoedkundige Waarde Van Woordeboeke : Voorstelle Vir Woordeboekonderrig In Suid-Afrika, Michele Van Der Merwe Jan 2009

Die Opvoedkundige Waarde Van Woordeboeke : Voorstelle Vir Woordeboekonderrig In Suid-Afrika, Michele Van Der Merwe

Michele Van Der Merwe

Self-Study Leveraging: The Qpc Model For Comprehensive Academic Program Review., Jamie Comstock, Kathy Booker Jan 2009

Self-Study Leveraging: The Qpc Model For Comprehensive Academic Program Review., Jamie Comstock, Kathy Booker

Jayne Marie Comstock

The past twenty years have brought about a paradigm shift in higher education. During that time, we have changed our focus from what we want to teach to what students need to learn. The academy's position of unassailable authority has been usurped by public cries for transparency, accountability, quality assurance, and quality improvement. To cut expenses, and therefore deter the rising cost of postsecondary education, institutions have borrowed best business practices and started focusing on productivity, efficiency, and reallocating resources.
