We discuss an intervention in mother language instruction in a Greek Vocational Lyceum combining Web 2.0 tools with electronic writing pedagogy. During a full school year (2012-13), forty six 11th grade students with typically low literacy skills participated, randomly separated in control and experimental group. The latter systematically dealt with Technical Problem Solving and completed online (Edmodo) increasingly complex writing tasks. Encouraged to reflect on and solve technical problems, they activated language skills for communicating their solutions through the synthesis of technical text-genres. The Adoption Of The Monarch Room As An Alternative To Suspension And Expulsion In Addressing School Discipline Issues Among Court-Involved Youth, Angelique G. Day

Suspension/expulsion is commonly used in schools, yet these practices can adversely affect students’ education well-being and do not improve student behavior. This study assesses the impact of the Monarch Room (MR) intervention, a trauma-informed alternative to school discipline suspension/expulsion policies, among a sample of 719 court-involved girls placed in residential care and enrolled in a public, chartered strict discipline academy over a three year period. MR use significantly decreased reliance on suspension/expulsion in addressing problematic behavior. School mobility and race were significant predictors of MR use, while school absences were not. Implications for policy and practice are also offered.

The study was conducted in the department of the English University of Gujrat during Spring- 2012 semester. A question paper was designed to check the aptitude of the intermediate students of population 25. There were three sections; Grammar, vocabulary and reading comprehension, in the question paper. Section: A (Grammar) was proved valid with 84.33 % of validity. The validity of Section: B (vocabulary) and Section C (reading comprehension) were 91.64 % and 52.00 respectively. As a whole, the validity of all the questions was 75.99 %. Thus, the designed aptitude test may be considered reliable.

This mixed methods study investigated the practice of outcomes assessment at master’s programs in library and information studies accredited by the American Library Association in the United States and Canada. Determining how well a student will perform in a course based on their prior knowledge of the course material and other factors may help determine student placement and the need for remedial instruction. This poster presents work on the creation of an expert system that attempts to predict a student’s performance based on a pre-evaluation test and responses to background preparation questions. College and university high-impact practice (HIP) courses involve students in intensive values-focused learning inside and/ or outside of the traditional classroom environment. Much research has documented that participation in HIPs increases student retention and graduation rates. Experiential-learning theory suggests that students acquire knowledge through hands-on learning environments, and aspiring journalists need a setting where they can experience science — its process(es) as well as how to report empirical findings. Researchers utilized pre/post questionnaires, field-notebook evaluation, and focus-group analysis as methods to assess an interdisciplinary, experiential course that combined science and media undergraduates. Results revealed students valued procedural over fact-based knowledge. Students also indicated increased perceived confidence—even when they answered questions incorrectly.

Earlier publications have shown that the number of references as well as the number of received citations are field-dependent. Consequently, a long reference list may lead to more citations. The purpose of this article is to study the concrete relationship between number of references and citation counts. This article tries to find an answer for the concrete case of Malaysian highly cited papers and Malaysian review papers. Malaysian paper is a paper with at least one Malaysian affiliation. This study investigated trends in research collaborative network among Tanzanian institutions of higher learning. The study focused primarily on online journals based on the fact that they can be easily accessed and stored as compared to print media. It employed a concept analysis design because it didn’t make use of field-based study. It used convenience sampling to get 118 online Journals authored by educators in Tanzanian institutions of higher learning. This preliminary research provides the psychometric properties of three instruments that assess school staff perceptions of student behavior (TPSB), awareness of trauma (TTS), and responses to student behavior (TRSB). Validity and reliability were established for these measures using a sample of 26 school staff members. Cronbach’s alpha internal consistency coefficient for the TPSB resulted in α = 0.83 for both its “acting out” and “shutting down” subscales. The TTS had α = 0.91. TRSB resulted in α = 0.79 for the “acting out” subscale and α = 0.81 for the “shutting down” subscale. These measures may be useful in evaluating …

This literature review covers journal articles reporting early childhood education (ECE) research in Australia and New Zealand in the past 10 years and it has found that: (1) Nearly half of the articles lacked child-related data with an explicit or implied justification, while less than one-tenth failed to include child-related data with no justification; (2) Over one-third of the articles addressed the voice of the child, while less than one-tenth included child-related data for assessment purpose. This poster presents an overview of ongoing work in the Computer Science Department to assess the learning oc-curring in multiple undergraduate courses in an analytical manner which will facilitate semester-to-semester and in-stitution-to-institution comparisons. It describes the types of assessments created (which are course-specific based on ACM model content areas identified as covered by the instructor), their use, data analysis and the conclu-sions which can be drawn.
