A Beautiful Mind: Black Male Intellectual Identity And Hip Hop Culture, Toby S. Jenkins May 2011

A Beautiful Mind: Black Male Intellectual Identity And Hip Hop Culture, Toby S. Jenkins

Toby S Jenkins

In a field like hip-hop, where written and verbal communication are the two primary forms of work production, the mind or intellect of the artist should be viewed as the very thing responsible for success. However, unlike other writing-intense fields, the mind of hip-hop artists is often the least valued and least lauded trait. Hip-hop artists, whether they realize it or not, have more to offer. They are more than the things that they possess. They are writers. They are thinkers. This article examines intellectualism in hip-hop music—its presence, shortcomings, and ultimate value.

Writing And The World Of Work: An Integrative Learning Community Model At A Two-Year Institution, Michael J. Stebleton, Nicholas Nownes

Michael J. Stebleton

Learning community (LC) programs continue to proliferate across college campuses as a strategy to engage and retain students. Although evidence exists to suggest increased levels of social engagement among LC participants, there is an ongoing debate about the impact on student academic engagement and intellectual development. This article describes a learning community effort at a community college between an English composition faculty member and a faculty counselor who teaches a life-career planning course. A primary objective of this collaboration was to promote deeper student integrative learning. Students in the LC engaged in the process through writing, reflection, and self-assessment based …

The Social Network film can serve as a helpful tool for student affairs educators to facilitate learning around issues related to student development theory and practice. Cognitive Effects Of Argument Visualization Tools, Michael H.G. Hoffmann Jan 2011

Cognitive Effects Of Argument Visualization Tools, Michael H.G. Hoffmann

Michael H.G. Hoffmann

External representations play a crucial role in learning. At the same time, cognitive load theory suggests that the possibility of learning depends on limited resources of the working memory and on cognitive load imposed by instructional design and representation tools. Both these observations motivate a critical look at Computer-Supported Argument Visualization (CSAV) tools that are supposed to facilitate learning. This paper uses cognitive load theory to compare the cognitive efficacy of RationaleTM 2 and AGORA.

Metalurgia Extractiva Y Política Nacional, Fathi Habashi Jan 2011

Metalurgia Extractiva Y Política Nacional, Fathi Habashi

Fathi Habashi

Should a country export its mineral wealth in form of concentrates or should it locally treat its ores to produce metals as final products? In the past centuries pyrometallurgy was the only route to extract metals from ores and this required a large capital investment many countries could not afford to raise. This situation encouraged marketing of concentrates. Today, metallurgists have the option to use the hydrometallurgical route to process ores and concentrates at a reasonable capital investment. This opened the way to the possibility of processing ores locally. When need arises to increase production new units can be added …

Then both groups enjoyed a series of similar instructions except that the students in experimental group were required to express their own opinions about and …
