Technical Problem Based E-Language Instruction For Vocational Students, Eleni Papantoniou, Thanasis Hadzilacos Jan 2016

Technical Problem Based E-Language Instruction For Vocational Students, Eleni Papantoniou, Thanasis Hadzilacos

Eleni Papantoniou

We discuss an intervention in mother language instruction in a Greek Vocational Lyceum combining Web 2.0 tools with electronic writing pedagogy. During a full school year (2012-13), forty six 11th grade students with typically low literacy skills participated, randomly separated in control and experimental group. The latter systematically dealt with Technical Problem Solving and completed online (Edmodo) increasingly complex writing tasks. Encouraged to reflect on and solve technical problems, they activated language skills for communicating their solutions through the synthesis of technical text-genres. Meanwhile the control group followed the conventional teaching method using the usual literary texts. Pre and ...

Produkt-Orientierte Übersetzung: Weg Von Der Insel, Uwe Muegge Apr 2015

Produkt-Orientierte Übersetzung: Weg Von Der Insel, Uwe Muegge

Uwe Muegge

Geometry: Drawing From The Islamic Tradition, Carol Bier Jan 2015

Geometry: Drawing From The Islamic Tradition, Carol Bier

Carol Bier

Getting students involved in careful observation and analysis and encouraging their exploration of cultural forms of expression is an excellent means of introducing mathematical ideas. Geometric patterns abound in Islamic art and architecture. Exhibiting great ingenuity over the centuries, Muslim artists and craftsmen created beautiful patterns to adorn architectural monuments and exquisite objects. The Alhambra in Spain and the Taj Mahal in India offer the most famous examples of extraordinary patterns using brick and glazed tile, or carved and inlaid marble. Other examples of patterns are made using metal, wood, and fiber. Students may gain conceptual and theoretical understanding of ...

Using Self-Assessment Checklists To Make English Language Learners Self-Directed, Masoud Mahmoodi-Shahrebabaki Dec 2014

Using Self-Assessment Checklists To Make English Language Learners Self-Directed, Masoud Mahmoodi-Shahrebabaki

masoud mahmoodi-shahrebabaki

Self-directed learning (SDL) has recently gathered momentum among EFL/ESL researchers. Within the SDL framework, learners are responsible to monitor and evaluate their own learning. Student selfassessment can play a crucial role in helping learners become more dedicated and motivated. This study aimed at examining the role of filling out self-assessment checklists by 115 Iranian EFL learners over three successive semesters with reference to the role of gender and level of proficiency. Three classes filled out a standard weekly self-evaluation checklist while three corresponding classes passed the same courses simultaneously without filling out any checklist. The result showed that there ...

Teaching Translation Technology In The 21st Century, Uwe Muegge Sep 2014

Teaching Translation Technology In The 21st Century, Uwe Muegge

Uwe Muegge

The author's definition of 'technical translation' is pragmatic: Technical translation differs from literary translation in that in a technical translation project, all texts are linked with a product. The product-centric nature of technical translation projects requires that technical translation projects are processed in a translation memory system to ensure terminological and stylistic consistency, among other things.

The desire to create automatons is a familiar theme in human history, and during the age of the Enlightenment mechanical automatons became not only an “emblem of the cosmos”, but a symbol of man’s confidence that he would unlock nature’s greatest mysteries and fully harness her power. And yet only a century later, automatons had begun to represent human repression and servitude, a theme later picked up by writers of science fiction. Man’s confidence undeterred, the endgame of the modern scientific and technological mindset, or MSTM, seems to be increasingly coming into view with the rise of ...

Teaching Localization: 6 Practices That Make A Difference (Part Ii), Uwe Muegge Feb 2014

Teaching Localization: 6 Practices That Make A Difference (Part Ii), Uwe Muegge

Uwe Muegge

Translation memory (TM) systems have become commonplace in today’s translation courses – sometimes for the wrong reasons. If students are told that the only reason for using a translation memory is to leverage previous translations, these students will not use a TM system for non-repetitive texts. That teaching approach might also be frustrating for students who start with an empty translation memory, as these students may not get any immediate benefit from using TM technology. If, however, students are introduced to the translation memory as a quality assurance tool, the return on investment is instant.

Educating Prisoners Of Tradition: Visual Narratives Of Afghan Women On Social Media, Esmaeil Zeiny Jan 2014

Educating Prisoners Of Tradition: Visual Narratives Of Afghan Women On Social Media, Esmaeil Zeiny

Esmaeil Zeiny

More than a decade after the US-led intervention of Afghanistan, traditional and tribal customs still play a significant role in the everyday lives of people, especially women. History has proven that women have been playing a significant role in shaping the course of Afghanistan but unfortunately, they are always subjected to different degrees of force by patriarchy and traditions. By examining the historical perspective of women’s status in Afghanistan and by analyzing two Youtube documentaries on women’s imprisonment, we argue that 12 years after the US-led intervention, women are still suffering from traditional and tribal laws. This paper ...

The New Testament provides for all time marks an absolute teacher, even if have strictly historically, a teacher and a church willing to hear the Word of Life. Progress disciples from fishermen and publicans the Apostles and teacher of the world can be theoretized and implemented in an ordinary school. But all Christian schools the teaching is known and appreciated. Rethinking the Gospel values in a school that seems to have tot-gotten that Christ is the supreme Teacher is quite normal. Remapping Africa In The Global Space: Propositions For Change, Edward Shizha Jan 2014

Remapping Africa In The Global Space: Propositions For Change, Edward Shizha

Edward Shizha

What are the benefits and risks for Africa's participation in the globalisation nexus? Remapping Africa in the Global Space is a visionary and interdisciplinary volume that restores Africa's image using a multidisciplinary lens. It incorporates disciplines such as sociology, education, global studies, economics, development studies, political science and philosophy to explore and theorise Africa's reality in the global space and to deconstruct the misperceptions and narratives that often infantilise Africa's internal and international relations. The contributions to this volume are a hybrid of both 'outsider' and 'insider' perspectives that create a balanced critical discourse that can ...

Culture At Risk | Anthropological Evidence Of The 15 Intended Itaukei Tapa Cloth (Masi) Motifs Pre-Dating The Creation Of The Air Pacific/Fiji Airways Logo, Cresantia F. Koya Vaka'uta

Cresantia Frances Koya Vaka'uta

This short paper examines the history of Tapa (bark cloth) in order to show that the fifteen indigenous kesakesa designs (symbols) identified as trademark worthy by Air Pacific/Fiji Airways are a significant part of the cultural heritage of the iTaukei peoples of Fiji. It will also show that Tapa and the designs/motifs found within tapa are often shared cultural designs across the Pacific. The position taken is that all forms of cultural heritage expressions must remain the intellectual property of their indigenous owners from whom this knowledge, skills and art forms originate. The premise is that NO COMMERCIAL ...

Digital Self-Efficacy And Language Learning Enhancement In An Online Setting, Karim Hajhashemi, Alireza Shakaramia, Hassan Khajehei

Karim Hajhashemi

The importance of personal factors such as personality traits, learning strategies, self-esteem, and self-efficacy in the complicated task of language learning has been established for years. However, the introduction of computers, networks and their wide communication affordances, seem to impact many aspects of learning and teaching and particularly language learning and teaching. The storage place, manner, and magnitude of learning materials for example, have shifted from the human mind to portable digital storage places that consequently require different types of aggregation, retrieval, and usage of information. Noting the rapid communication of today through networking, ICT competency plays important roles with ...

Truth, Rhetoric, And Critical Thinking, Lajos L. Brons Nov 2013

Truth, Rhetoric, And Critical Thinking, Lajos L. Brons

Lajos Brons

Despite the extraordinary amount of attention critical thinking has received in the last few decades, the teaching and fostering of critical thinking in higher education is largely failing, and critical thinking has become an empty buzzword. However, given its importance as an aim of education, it needs to be “refilled”, but that is possible only after identifying the causes of the current failure, i.e. the obstacles to fostering critical thinking. Three such obstacles are identified in this paper, two actual and one hypothetical: (1) the lack of clarity and agreement about what critical thinking is, (2) current teaching practice ...

Emerging Views On Making: Fibre Graduates Reflect On Their Practice, Kathleen Morris Nov 2013

Emerging Views On Making: Fibre Graduates Reflect On Their Practice, Kathleen Morris

Kathleen Morris

This narrative research examines the ways in which craft is conceptualized from the perspective of five recent graduates from the Material Art and Design Fibre Program at a prominent Canadian art and design university. Recognizing the cultural currents that have excised acts of making, including Western de-industrialization and abundant access to offshore labour markets, this research looks at the role of maker within a new societal context. A nascent theoretical platform for craft, shaped by artists and academics, counters a dearth of voices that has characterized the field’s history. Here, craft is posited as a methodology, characterized by embodiment ...

Understanding Ill-Structured Engineering Ethics Problems Through A Collaborative Learning And Argument Visualization Approach, Michael H.G. Hoffmann, Jason Borenstein Feb 2013

Understanding Ill-Structured Engineering Ethics Problems Through A Collaborative Learning And Argument Visualization Approach, Michael H.G. Hoffmann, Jason Borenstein

Michael H.G. Hoffmann

As a committee of the National Academy of Engineering recognized, ethics education should foster the ability of students to analyze complex decision situations and ill-structured problems. Building on the NAE’s insights, we report about an innovative teaching approach that has two main features: first, it places the emphasis on deliberation and on self-directed, problem-based learning in small groups of students; and second, it focuses on understanding ill-structured problems. The first innovation is motivated by an abundance of scholarly research that supports the value of deliberative learning practices. The second results from a critique of the traditional case-study approach in ...

Travelling In Cuba, Fathi Habashi Feb 2013

Travelling In Cuba, Fathi Habashi

Fathi Habashi

Contact with Cuban scientists was established in 1986 when two researchers from Centro de Investigaciones para Industria Minero Metalurgica in Havana visited Laval University to get acquainted with research activities in the area of extractive metallurgy. This was followed in early 1987 by two more researchers from the same centre. Invitations were then received in late 1987, 1989, and 2008 to visit the nickel refineries in Cuba and to hold seminars at the University of Havana. The present report outlines these activities.
