Cognitive Apprenticeships: An Instructional Design Review, Brent Wilson, Peggy Cole

This discussion of the relationship between two related disciplines--cognitive psychology and instructional design (ID)--characterizes instructional design as a more applied discipline, which concerns itself more with prescriptions and models for designing instruction, while instructional psychologists conduct empirical research on learning and instructional processes. It is posited that a problem-solving orientation to education is needed if schoo]s are to achieve substantial learning outcomes, and the concept of cognitive apprenticeships, which emphasize returning instruction to settings where worthwhile problems can be worked with and solved, is proposed as a possible solution to this problem. Multiple steps are necessary for a well-designed Promise-type scholarship program. Through multiple community visits, Upjohn Institute staff members will assess the need and capacity of the Hamilton, Canada community for such a scholarship. Based on those assessments, staff members will present a program design that takes into consideration such parameters as its universality, funding structure, geographic eligibility, academic supports, and management/administration of the program. The purpose of this project was to support the research and writing of a book assessing the value of place-based (“Promise”) scholarship programs. Since the first such program was announced in Kalamazoo in 2005, this model has been replicated to one degree or another in many different settings. Yet there have been only limited efforts to evaluate the impact of existing Promise programs and virtually no comparative work examining different approaches to designing and implementing place-based scholarships. The parameters of the program, such as student eligibility, eligible post-secondary institutions, and time frame, are currently under discussion by stakeholders in Rockford. In order to study whether universal college scholarships can reduce inequality in education, we study one aspect of the Kalamazoo Promise that resembles a “natural experiment.” We use the fact that the surprise announcement of the scholarship created a large change in expected college tuition costs that varied across different groups of students based on past enrollment decisions. Using a differences-in-differences analysis, we compare the outcomes of Promise-eligible students to ineligible students, before and after the Promise. Outcomes studied include college enrollment, whether the student has obtained a college degree, and after-college earnings. We use the economical and racial diversity …

The Upjohn Institute will oversee a multi-faceted research initiative assessing the impact of place-based scholarships on post-secondary attainment and local economic development. The project involves the development of an integrated database covering post-secondary enrollment and attainment in five Promise communities, a series of working papers based on this data by researchers in five Promise communities using a common analytical framework, and the development of a Web-based clearinghouse of promising practices for Promise communities that includes best-practices information on how to track the impact of Promise programs. Many universities use a center-based model to deliver services to students with disabilities. A hybrid service delivery model utilizing a center-based disability resource and faculty mentors was recently implemented in a large, public university in the Northwestern United States. Noticeable improvements observed to date include increased administrative support, positive collaborations with teaching center staff, and increased faculty awareness of resources for instructing students with disabilities.

Performance in tests of spoken language can be influenced by a wide range of features of both task and participants. This article hypothesises that there may be effects on performance attributable to an interaction of variables such as the task topic, the gender of the person presenting the topic and the gender of the candidate. In contrast to previous studies, which have examined speaking tests involving face-to-face interaction, this study considered the issue in a tape-mediated test delivered in a language laboratory, with no interlocutor present, but where stimulus material is presented by one or more speakers, one of whom …
