The goal of TIMSS is to provide comparative information about educational achievement across countries to improve teaching and learning in mathematics and science. A series of research studies was completed over 3 years to evaluate baccalaureate nursing students' transcultural self-efficacy following the completion of service-learning projects. A quantitative pilot study was completed in 2007 with a convenience sample of students (n=60) enrolled in a community health nursing course. Several clinical groups worked with local communities and one clinical group took part in a one-week program in Guatemala. The Transcultural Self-Efficacy Tool (TSET) was administered at the beginning and completion of the semester. A paired-samples t test demonstrated a significant increase for pre-test to post-test total and subscale scores. A follow-up field study was …

Situational Interest (SI) manifests as a direct result of an individual’s surroundings or environment and is comprised of triggered-SI, the initial arousing, and maintained-SI, long-term influence that translates into personal significance. With respect to multimedia learning environments, elements or principles of multimedia design have proven to increase both triggered-SI and maintained-SI. However, the question remains whether or not gender of an individual in such an environment has an impact on SI. This presentation examines the role of gender in learner preferences and proposes future research questions on the topic.

The ADDIE phases showcase the most important steps taken when designing and implementing instruction. Many scholars focus on the importance of employing a systematic approach to identify a performance gap and prescribe an instructional intervention. High School Exit Examinations: When Do Learning Effects Generalize?, John H. Bishop

This paper reviews international and domestic evidence on the effects of three types of high school exit exam systems: voluntary curriculum-based external exit exams, universal curriculum-based external exit exam systems and minimum competency tests that must be passed to receive a regular high school diploma. The nations and provinces that use Universal CBEEES (and typically teacher grades as well) to signal student achievement have significantly higher achievement levels and smaller differentials by family background than otherwise comparable jurisdictions that base high stakes decisions on voluntary college admissions tests and/or teacher grades.
