Elaborating A Model Of Teacher Professional Growth, David Clarke, Hilary Hollingsworth Dec 2001

Elaborating A Model Of Teacher Professional Growth, David Clarke, Hilary Hollingsworth

Dr Hilary Hollingsworth

This paper details a model of teacher professional growth and relates the model to the research data on which the model is empirically founded. A key feature of the model is its inclusion of four analytic domains in close correspondence to those employed by Guskey (Educational Researcher 15(5), 1986) and others, but the model proposed in this paper identifies the specific mechanisms by which change in one domain is associated with change in another. The interconnected, non-linear structure of the model enabled the identification of particular “change sequences” and “growth networks”, giving recognition to the idiosyncratic and individual nature of …

Performance Feedback To Schools Of Students’ Year 12 Assessments : The Vce Data Project, Ross Turner, Ken Rowe, K Lane Dec 2001

Performance Feedback To Schools Of Students’ Year 12 Assessments : The Vce Data Project, Ross Turner, Ken Rowe, K Lane

Ross Turner

This chapter describes a current project conducted in Victoria, Australia, to engender within-school improvements in teaching, learning and student achievement via the provision of performance feedback data from the Year 12 Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) assessment program. With a key focus on improvement, the purpose of the VCE Data Project aims to assist schools to monitor the effectiveness of their within-school teaching and learning programs for students on up to 53 subjects in a given year, and over time. Within the context of a discussion of issues related to the responsible feedback of student performance data to schools for …

Dynamic Task Assignment In Server Farms: Better Performance By Task Grouping, Ling Tan, Z Tari Dec 2001

Dynamic Task Assignment In Server Farms: Better Performance By Task Grouping, Ling Tan, Z Tari

Dr Ling Tan

This paper describes a dynamic load balancing approach to distributed server farm systems. This approach overcomes the interference caused by non-negligible very-large tasks in the heavy-tailed distribution. First, a subset of tasks is allocated proportionally to the processing capability of participating servers by taking into account their remaining processing time. Later, tasks in the servers are processed in order of priority to optimise the system response time. The proposed load balancing algorithm also takes into account the information on server loads to avoid load imbalance caused by very large tasks. The experiments show that the mean waiting time and the …

A New Parallel Genetic Algorithm, Ling Tan, D Taniar, K Smith Dec 2001

A New Parallel Genetic Algorithm, Ling Tan, D Taniar, K Smith

Dr Ling Tan

One problem of propagating the globally fittest individual via neighbourhood evolution in both the island model and the cellular model of existing parallel genetic algorithms (PGAs) is that the migration of the globally best individual is delayed to non-adjacent processors. This may cause an inferior search in those sub-populations. The propagation delay of the globally best individual is proportional to the network distance between two processors. Delayed migration of the best individual in PGAs is an essential deviation from the sequential version of the genetic algorithm, in which the best individuals are always used to compete with other individuals. To …

Capability Versus Competency In Information Technology Education: Challenging The Learning Context For Lifelong Technological Literacy, Renata Phelps Dec 2001

Capability Versus Competency In Information Technology Education: Challenging The Learning Context For Lifelong Technological Literacy, Renata Phelps

Dr Renata Phelps

As Information Technology (IT) gains greater integration into the teaching and learning processes within all levels of education the capability of both teachers and students to embrace this ever-changing technology becomes essential. Traditional "training" approaches in relation to IT have tended to emphasise competency in specific computer skills. It is argued that a capability-based, rather than competency-based, approach to computer education may provide more significant and empowering learning outcomes for students. An action research project is reported which is investigating the effect of a metacognitive approach to learning and teaching on the self-efficacy and learning capability of students. Several cohorts …

The Role Of Metacognitive And Reflective Learning Processes In Developing Capable Computer Users, Renata Phelps, Allan Ellis, Stewart Hase Dec 2001

The Role Of Metacognitive And Reflective Learning Processes In Developing Capable Computer Users, Renata Phelps, Allan Ellis, Stewart Hase

Dr Renata Phelps

There is continued pressure for the application, and integration, of computer technologies into learning and teaching. For such innovations to be successfully implemented, students themselves must have the confidence, ability and willingness to engage with computer technology. In some disciplinary and professional contexts such as arts, humanities, social studies and education many adult learners are insecure and anxious regarding their ability to use, or to learn about, computer technology. Traditionally, competency-based, or skills-focussed training approaches have been utilised to assist inexperienced students to gain confidence with using computers. This paper argues that such approaches do not promote the development of …
