Given the importance of effective teacher evaluation to successful teaching and learning, it is surprising that many of the research findings in this area are being ignored. Discredited procedures continue to survive and are even born again within reinvented systems of bureaucratic and managerial control This paper argues for an approach to teacher evaluation that reflects the findings of contemporary research. It falls into three parts. The first part reviews the relevant literature and distills some features and principles that underpin successful policy and practice. This report describes the views of graduates from Australian universities on their experience of postgraduate research. It focuses specifically on graduates who completed their courses of study in 2000 but also references the previous cohort of postgraduate research students. The Post-Graduate Research Experience Questionnaire enables graduates to express their degree of agreement or disagreement on the following facets of their courses : quality of supervision; intellectual climate of the department in which the respondent was based; development of skills; quality of the infrastructure provided by the university; the thesis examination process; and the clarity of goals and expectations.

The Third International Mathematics and Science Study- Repeat 1998/1999 (TIMSS) assessed the mathematics and science achievement of students in their second year of high school. In addition to achievement tests, extensive information was collected from students and teachers. Of the 38 countries that took part, the overall results in mathematics of eleven countries, including Australia were not statistically different. Following the TIMSS research model, this article examines the association between three levels of curriculum, the intended curriculum, the implemented and the attained curriculum. This article presents a broad view of issues related to faculty diversity. Headings include Demographics, The Growth of Faculty Diversity as an Ideal, and Barriers in the Academic Workplace. Race, ethnicity, and gender are the most common characteristics that institutions observe in order to measure faculty diversity. An even broader approach to faculty diversity involves age, socioeconomic background, national origin, sexual orientation, and diverse learning styles and opinions. Encouraging the entry of women into science-related careers remains problematic in the UK and Australia. Although recent initiatives have resulted in increased participation of girls in science-related subjects in schools, there remains a significant gender divide in entry to scientific programmes of study at post-compulsory and university levels. In this study, datasets for 13-year-old pupils in Australia and England taken from the Third International Maths and Science Survey (TIMSS) were used to derive path models that identify factors influencing the extent to which science-related careers were viewed as desirable by Australian and English pupils. State education departments have recently begun to improve their collection of student absence data, often to contribute to the development of performance standards for schools. In their chapter on numeracy, the authors begin by exploring the many terms used to describe the learning of mathematics by adults. They discuss the relationship between the terms "mathematics" and "numeracy" and explain why numeracy--making meaning with numbers and mathematical processes--is the term they chose for their overview. The subjects studied in the senior secondary years have a major influence upon subsequent educational and career options, and the choice of subjects has been seen as involving issues about equity between various social groups. Concern over equity in subject choice is expressed in relation to science because it is regarded as the basis for entry to many programs of professional education. This study investigates the VCE outcomes for Victorian Year 12 students by school sector and location, and the consequences for university selection. The key finding is that students in Victorian government schools are performing poorly at Year 12 level relative to their counterparts in the Catholic and other Independent schools. The overall median ENTER for Independent schools students was 84.20, compared with 69.65 for Catholic schools and 62.80 for government schools. The percentage of students who began Year 12 in 2000 and actually enrolled in a Victorian university in 2001 were 31% (Government), 48% (Catholic) and 60% (Independent).

It seems that 'case study' can mean very different things. The staunch positivists treat it warily as some kind of slippery, self-indulgent chat about one's personal experiences at a site. Others mistakenly equate 'case study' with all forms of qualitative inquiry. And some see it merely as a way of making a quantitative study more interesting, but when used appropriately, well-planned, with participants and researcher working a collaborative manner, case study can be a powerful means of investigation. A number of parameters must be specified for a data-mining algorithm. Default values of these parameters are given and generally accepted as ‘good’ estimates for any data set. However, data mining models are known to be data dependent, and so are for their parameters. Default values may be good estimates, but they are often not the best parameter values for a particular data set. A tuned set of parameter values is able to produce a data-mining model of better classification and higher prediction accuracy. However parameter search is known to be expensive.
