The Voltammetry Of C84 Isomers, Mark Anderson, Harry Dorn, Steven Stevenson, Susanne Dana
The Voltammetry Of C84 Isomers, Mark Anderson, Harry Dorn, Steven Stevenson, Susanne Dana
Mark R. Anderson
The square-wave voltammetry of isolated isomers of C84 is reported. Based on their relative abundance, the isomers are assumed to have D2 and D2d symmetry. The D2 isomer has four reversible reductions at −0.65, −0.98, −1.34, and −1.75 V versus Fc/Fc+ prior to electrolyte decomposition. This behavior is consistent with previous reports, and is similar to the voltammetry of C60 and C70 (e.g. sequential reductions spaced at slightly increasing intervals). The D2d isomer has five reversible reductions at −0.46, −0.77, −1.58, −1.98, and −2.27 V versus Fc/Fc+ prior to the onset of electrolyte decomposition. The large potential difference separating the …

Does Community College Versus Four-Year College Attendance Influence Students' Educational Plans?, Ernest T. Pascarella, Marcia Edison, Amaury Nora, Linda Serra Hagedorn, Patrick T. Terenzini
Linda Serra Hagedorn
In this study researchers tested the hypothesis that community college attendance lowers students' precollege plans to obtain a bachelor of arts degree. In the presence of controls for precollege plans, other background factors, and college academic and nonacademic experiences, community college students initially planning to obtain a bachelor of arts degree were between 20% and 31% more likely than similar four-year college students to lower their plans below a bachelor of arts degree by the end of the second year of college.

Campaigns Against Gender Violence (1977-1993), Professor Vibhuti Patel
Professor Vibhuti Patel
The women's movement in India launched campaigns against rape, domestic violence, sexism in advertisements as well as against state repression during caste and communal riots in the early eighties. Before that, during the postemergency period of 1977-1980, small groups of women's rights activists in Hyderabad, Bombay, Delhi and Madras had started taking up individual cases of custodial rape, deaths of-housewives under mysterious circumstances and excesses by the state enforcement machinery during caste/communal riots which had increased in number and intensity of violence. The mass of poor women involved in the struggles of the tribal people, the industrial working classes and …

Currently, Economics is an elective school subject in all States and Territories. In Queensland, only students in Year 11 and 12 have the possibility to study Economics. The major aim of the Economic Literacy Survey - Queensland 1998 was to assess Economic literacy levels of students at the senior secondary school throughout Queensland. The target group, thus, comprised students from both Year 11 and 12. The Economic Literacy Survey built on last year's Economic Literacy Pilot Study conducted in schools throughout Central Queensland. Piloting served to validate the various questionnaires for students, teachers and schools participating in the survey. Performance …

Autocrine Hepatocyte Growth Factor Provides A Local Mechanism For Promoting Axonal Growth, X. Yang, J. Toma, S. Bamji, Daniel Belliveau, J. Kohn, M. Park, F. Miller
Daniel J. Belliveau
In this report, we describe a novel local mechanism necessary for optimal axonal growth that involves hepatocyte growth factor (HGF). Sympathetic neurons of the superior cervical ganglion coexpress bioactive HGF and its receptor, the Met tyrosine kinase, both in vivo and in vitro. Exogenous HGF selectively promotes the growth but not survival of cultured sympathetic neurons; the magnitude of this growth effect is similar to that observed with exogenous NGF. Conversely, HGF antibodies that inhibit endogenous HGF decrease sympathetic neuron growth but have no effect on survival. This autocrine HGF is required locally by sympathetic axons for optimal growth, as …
Understanding Interest Group Involvement In The Process Of Educational Governance, Abe Feuerstein
Understanding Interest Group Involvement In The Process Of Educational Governance, Abe Feuerstein
Abe Feuerstein
Public schools in America are often at the center of heated controversy concerning values and interests. Buffeted from the left and the right, school boards and administrators struggle to create workable school policies. Much of this conflict is related to the participation of powerful interest groups in the process of educational governance. These groups, composed of concerned business leaders, minorities, legislators, teachers, and taxpayers, play an increasingly important role in the representation and articulation of educational issues. The involvement of interest groups and the political nature of most decisions concerning the public schools necessitates the preparation of educational leaders able …

Linguistic And Cultural Norms In Language Testing : A Case Study, Annie Brown, Tom Lumley
Linguistic And Cultural Norms In Language Testing : A Case Study, Annie Brown, Tom Lumley
Dr Tom Lumley
Users of English in Asia may not have the same need to aspire to a ' standard' form of English. It may be more appropriate for them to develop a communicative competence employing the sociolinguistic and cultural norms of the region. Taking such an approach in the development of tests of English proficiency involves rethinking basic assumptions. This paper considers these issues in the context of a test of English proficiency developed for use with English teachers in Indonesia
Assessment In Primary Schools, John Ainley
Assessment In Primary Schools, John Ainley
Dr John Ainley
This chapter focuses on one of the elements that has been brought to centre stage by restructuring processes, assessment. It discusses the breadth of evidence used by modern primary teachers to establish the extent to which student learning has occurred, including observations, portfolios, projects, and paper and pen testing. It argues that for assessment to inform teachers about student learning proper interpretation of the data must occur, which includes reference to other pupils' performances, whether or not specific criteria have been achieved or how this piece of work measures up to other work that the student has done. It discusses …

Opening Pathways From Education To Work, Marianne Durand-Drouhin, Phil Mckenzie, Richard Sweet

The participation rate in education has been rising in OECD countries in recent years. Yet, on average around a quarter of young people leave school without completing their upper- secondary education. Many of the obstacles young school-leavers face are caused by failure or under- achievement at school. On the principle that prevention is better than cure, the pathways to work and adult life would be improved by aiming government policy first and foremost at reducing failure levels at school. This article explores differences between the experiences of people with low levels of qualifications in different OECD countries.

Thematic Review Of The Transition From Initial Education To Working Life, Phil Mckenzie, Marianne Durand-Drouhin
Thematic Review Of The Transition From Initial Education To Working Life, Phil Mckenzie, Marianne Durand-Drouhin
Dr Phillip McKenzie
The transition to work is "a key stage in laying the basis for continuing progression in learning and work throughout adult life" and "remains a key policy issue" among OECD members. For one thing, training and education—while presenting youth with diverse pathways—often fail to motivate youth, leaving them unsure of how to benefit from such opportunities. Those at greatest risk against the labour market must be taking seriously into account, but the same has to be done with those who have chosen to follow a tertiary education pathway. The transition process is tending to become longer. It is also complex, …

Supporting Youth Pathways, Phil Mckenzie, Marianne Durand-Drouhin, Richard Sweet
Dr Phillip McKenzie
As ever greater value is placed on people's skills, knowledge and attitudes, the demand for learning and relearning over a lifetime is increasing. What are the current patterns of participation in education and other forms of learning, from infancy through adult years? What policy orientations have been adopted by governments to advance lifelong learning? To what extent do existing policies and practices take into account the new ways young people and adults will need to learn and the choices, interests, experiences and circumstances of learners themselves? These are some of the questions addressed in this new edition of Education Policy …

Science And Technology Studies And Education: An Introduction To The Special Issue, David Shutkin, Hank Bromley
David S. Shutkin
To introduce this special issue, the guest editors present an overview of the articles within the context of an introduction to science and technology studies (STS). STS scholarship addresses social, historical, and philosophical issues concerning the practices of science and technology, and the articles illustrate the emergence of STS ideas in the fields of educational technology and science education. The editors discuss different approaches within STS and situate the entire field within post-Enlightenment modernity. The representation of scientific and technological knowledge is a central concern in STS, and the editors critically examine efforts to fix the meaning of such knowledge.

David (Dave) Tout
By utilising on-line communication technology, The ANAMOL project aimed to address the problems of numeracy teachers who often work in isolated situations. Teachers from four states communicated both on a weekly basis using 'chat' technology, and irregularly via web- based discussion forum. Through these discussions, teaching materials were written, trialled, refined and published on a newly- developed website. This report documents the action research methodology used, the project outcomes and implications and recommendations for further on-line professional development.
