Building Target Language Oral Skills Through Drama, Chamkaur Gill Dec 1994

Building Target Language Oral Skills Through Drama, Chamkaur Gill

Chamkaur Gill

Extract:  When learners start a target language (TL) course, they are normally ".....quite unprepared for the challenge of a foreign language situation, full of self-doubt.." (Dougill 1987: 146). They feel a sense of unease and uncertainty as they wrestle with the new sounds and structures. They find it difficult to convey messages in the same spontaneous fashion that they can in their own languages. As they stutter and stammer in the foreign language (FL), it is natural for them to experience a sense of failure, thus resulting in a loss of confidence.

Cross-Language Synonyms In The Lexicons Of Bilingual Infants: One Language Or Two?, Barbara Zurer Pearson, Sylvia C. Fernandez, D.Kimbrough Oller

This study tests the widely-cited claim from Volterra & Taeschner (1978), which is reinforced by Clark's Principle of Contrast (1987), that young simultaneous bilingual children reject cross-language synonyms in their earliest lexicons. The rejection of translation equivalents is taken by Volterra & Taeschner as support for the idea that the bilingual child possesses a single-language system which includes elements from both languages. We examine first the accuracy of the empirical claim and then its adequacy as support for the argument that bilingual children do not have independent lexical systems in each language. The vocabularies of 27 developing bilinguals were recorded …

The Heinz Electronic Library Interactive On-Line System (Helios): Building A Digital Archive Using Imaging, Ocr, And Natural Language Processing Technologies, Gabrielle Michalek

Gabrielle Michalek

In February 1994, Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) embarked on an ambitious project to convert one million pages of the congressional papers of Senator John Heinz (R-PA) into digital format and to provide access to these papers through innovative information retrieval software developed at CMU. Named in memory of the late Senator, the Heinz Electronic Library Interactive Online System (HELIOS) supports full-page digital images and it utilizes natural language processing (NLP) technology to search large quantities of unstructured text. HELIOS will allow researchers to access the Heinz papers through the campus network as well as through the Internet. Over one million …

Comparative Education In North America: The Search For Other Through The Escape From Self?, Irving Epstein Dec 1994

Comparative Education In North America: The Search For Other Through The Escape From Self?, Irving Epstein

Irving Epstein

Few would argue with the contention that comparative education is at a crossroads. Not unlike the traditional social science fields, the social foundations sub-disciplines generally and comparative education in particular, have suffered as a result of general trends that have affected North American academic discourse and practice: increased disciplinary specialisation within the context of growing university corporatism, and in the 1990s, downsizing. For inherently generalist fields such as comparative education, these pressures have heightened prospects for their programmatic reduction or even elimination [1]. At the same time, they have encouraged a healthy introspection regarding current purpose and future goals [2]. …

Theory And Practice On Preparing Human Resource Development Professionals, John A. Henschke Edd

John A. Henschke

Theory and practice in college and university academic programs preparing Human Resource Development (HRD) Professional Practitioners have seldom been addressed in the same places or times. This paper clarifies the terms, theory, practice, academic program, learning, learning organization; traces some history of the issues; provides a case illustration of how an HRD professional prepared in a program advocating a supportive connection between theory and practice, modeled that in his own professional career and developed support within the university setting.

Developing A Mentoring Program Improvement Evaluation Model, John A. Henschke Edd Dec 1994

Developing A Mentoring Program Improvement Evaluation Model, John A. Henschke Edd

John A. Henschke

Formal adult teacher model mentoring programs tend to have a predictable set of elements: policies, mentor selection procedures, mentor training activities, mentor role expectations, mentor-adult teacher matching, and secondary development relationships. Mentoring is an individualized, long-term, teaching/learning relationship between two people used to accomplish a variety of purposes. Yet, little evaluation has been conducted to determine its results, or the effectiveness of the current process, with an eye to making program improvements. The purpose of this qualitative research study was to: develop a program improvement model for an adult teacher mentoring program; apply the model to a formal adult teacher …
