Conceptual Understanding In History - How Do We Develop It?, Brian Doig, K Piper, Suzanne Mellor, Geoff Masters
Prof Geoff Masters AO
This is a reprint of the findings for history of a 1992 survey carried out by the Australian Council for Educational Research, published in 1994. It looked at 2900 students in Victorian schools at Years 5 and 9, and assessed their geographical, historical, cultural and political understandings based on a set of tasks. The reports of the findings for history teachers are dramatically important.

Changes In Reading Comprehension Across Cultures And Over Time, Petra Lietz
Changes In Reading Comprehension Across Cultures And Over Time, Petra Lietz
Dr Petra Lietz
Two internationally comparative studies of reading were conducted by the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA), namely the Reading Comprehension Study in 1970/71 and the Reading Literacy Study in 1990/91. Eight educational systems participated in both studies at the 14- year-old level, namely Belgium (French), Finland, Hungary, Italy, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Sweden, and the United States of America. The information on student, teacher, and school variables that were common to both studies provided the core evidence used for analysis in this thesis. The major results are described. A general factor, reasoning, could be identified as pertaining …

Students' Perception Of Learning In Biology 1, E Martens, Petra Lietz
Dr Petra Lietz
After collecting students' self-ratings on various study related tasks from 291 first year students enrolled in Biology in 1993, a theoretical model of the way in which (a) general student background factors such as sex, age and language at home and (b) particular factors concerned with students' learning and writing difficulties operate to influence end-of-year Biology results was developed. The proposed model was then tested using Partial Least Squares Path Analysis (PLSPATH) to examine the degree to which the theoretical model was an appropriate representation of the data. Results showed that university entrance score, gender, first year difficulties and learning …

Scale Economies In Australian Secondary Schools, Phil Mckenzie
Scale Economies In Australian Secondary Schools, Phil Mckenzie
Dr Phillip McKenzie
This paper reviews the evidence on the existence of scale economies in Australian secondary schools. The paper has three main sections: a description of the sizes of Australian secondary schools; an outline of the conceptual basis for estimations of scale economies; and a review of the empirical studies that have been conducted in Australia and overseas.

Cellular Localization Of Gap Junction Mrnas In Developing Rat Brain, Daniel Belliveau, C. Naus
Cellular Localization Of Gap Junction Mrnas In Developing Rat Brain, Daniel Belliveau, C. Naus
Daniel J. Belliveau
We investigated the developmental expression and cellular resolution of connexin32 and 43 mRNA in the rat brain using in situ hybridization. Utilizing 35S-labelled probes, in situ hybridization was performed on sections of embryonic day 20 and postnatal days 3, 10, 15, 30 and adult brain. Connexin32 mRNA was first detected in brainstem nuclei at postnatal day 3 and in the midbrain at postnatal day 15. The level of this message continued to increase to postnatal day 30 where the level of message reached a plateau or slightly decreased by adulthood. The distribution of signal included the medial vestibular nucleus, dorsal …

Using The Questionnaire On Teacher Interaction In The Professional Development Of Teachers., John Cresswell, D Fisher, B Fraser
Dr John Cresswell
For some time in Australia, the Schools Council of the National Board of Employment, Education and Training has been concerned with issues concerning the quality of teaching as evidenced through its reports on Teacher Quality: An Issues Paper (1989) and Australia's Teachers: An Agenda for the Next Decade (1990). These reports and others highlight the need for teachers to examine continually what they do in their classrooms. Most recently, teacher quality and the need for continued professional development of teachers has been the subject of ministerial statement. This report notes how the impact of, and responsibility for, effective implementation of …

Assessing Principals' Interpersonal Behaviour, John Cresswell, D Fisher
Dr John Cresswell
In the past 25 years much attention has been given to the development and use of instruments to assess the qualities of the classroom and school environment from the perspectives of students and teachers. This paper describes the development and validation of an instrument, the Principal Interaction Questionnaire, to measure principals' interpersonal behaviour in a school. The instrument was based on the Questionnaire on Teacher Interaction, which was first devised in The Netherlands and contains eight scales of measurement such as Leadership and Understanding. The questionnaire was sent to 60 schools throughout Australia where it was completed by the principal …
