The Partial Credit Model And Null Categories, M Wilson, Geoff Masters Feb 1993

The Partial Credit Model And Null Categories, M Wilson, Geoff Masters

Prof Geoff Masters AO

A category where the frequency of responses is zero, either for sampling or structural reasons, will be called anull category. One approach for ordered polytomous item response models is to downcode the categories (i.e., reduce the score of each category above the null category by one), thus altering the relationship between the substantive framework and the scoring scheme for items with null categories. It is discussed why this is often not a good idea, and a method for avoiding the problem is described for the partial credit model while maintaining the integrity of the original response framework. This solution is …

Textbook Treatments And Students’ Understanding Of Acceleration, G Dall’Alba, E Walsh, J Bowden, E Martin, Geoff Masters, P Ramsden, Andrew Stephanou Dec 1992

Textbook Treatments And Students’ Understanding Of Acceleration, G Dall’Alba, E Walsh, J Bowden, E Martin, Geoff Masters, P Ramsden, Andrew Stephanou

Prof Geoff Masters AO

A single science textbook often provides the syllabus for courses at upper secondary and tertiary levels, and may be used as a principal source of information or explanation. The research reported in this article challenges such practices. The ways in which the concept, acceleration, is treated in physics textbooks is compared with understandings of the concept demonstrated by final-year secondary (Year 12) and first-year university students. Some students' understandings are shown to be incomplete in ways that parallel misleading or inaccurate textbook treatments of the concept. In addition to misleading or inaccurate statements, the limitations of some textbook treatments of …

Implications For Higher Education Of A Competency-Based Approach To Education And Training, John Bowden, Geoff Masters Dec 1992

Implications For Higher Education Of A Competency-Based Approach To Education And Training, John Bowden, Geoff Masters

Prof Geoff Masters AO

This report presents a summary of the data collected by the project, and an analysis, using a view of competence through a relational model, of some of the issues that emerged. The authors suggest that universities, the professions, employers and the community have much to gain from the activities of the past few years concerned with the development of competency-based standards by the professions, although they do not believe that a full-blown competency-based approach to education will become dominant in university courses.

Reporting Research For Teachers: Students In The Senior Secondary Years, John Ainley, Michael Sheret Dec 1992

Reporting Research For Teachers: Students In The Senior Secondary Years, John Ainley, Michael Sheret

Dr John Ainley

Traditionally, until the 1970s, senior secondary schooling in Australia was restricted to a minority of each age group. This was particularly pronounced in the case of government schools. From that time, however, the proportion of each cohort staying at school beyond the compulsory years began to increase rapidly and, by the 1980s, retention patterns in secondary schools had changed dramatically. These changes were most marked in government secondary schools. In this article the authors report on a study conducted on a sample of government high schools in New South Wales, which examined the post compulsory educational experiences of a group …

Mediated Gender Differences In Reading Achievement Of 14 Year Old Students In 15 Educational Systems, Petra Lietz

Dr Petra Lietz

The present article focuses on the way in which student's gender operates through other student background variables to influence achievement in reading of 14-year-old students.

New Views Of Student Learning: Implications For Educational Measurement, Geoff Masters, R Mislevy Dec 1992

New Views Of Student Learning: Implications For Educational Measurement, Geoff Masters, R Mislevy

Prof Geoff Masters AO

Recent research in cognitive psychology has drawn attention to the important role that students' personal understandings and representations of subject matter play in the learning process. This chapter briefly reviews some of this research, and contrasts the kind of learning that results in an individual's changed conception or view of a phenomenon with the more passive, additive kind of learning assessed by most traditional achievement tests. To be consistent with a view of learning as an active, constructive process, educational tests are required that focus on key concepts in an area of learning, and that take into account the variety …

Physics Students' Understanding Of Relative Speed: A Phenomenographic Study, Eleanor Walsh, Gloria Dall'alba, John Bowden, Elaine Martin, Ference Marton, Geoff Masters, Paul Ramsden, Andrew Stephanou

Prof Geoff Masters AO

It is important that students of physics develop both quantitative and qualitative understanding of physical concepts and principles. Although accuracy and reliability in solving quantitative problems is necessary, a qualitative understanding is required in applying concepts and principles to new problems and in real-life situations. If students are not able to understand what underlies quantitative problem-solving procedures nor interpret the solution in physical terms, it is questionable whether they have developed an adequate understanding of physics. The research reported here is part of a larger phenomenographic study that is concerned with the assessment of physics students' understanding of some basic …

Participation In Science Courses In Senior Secondary School, John Ainley Dec 1992

Participation In Science Courses In Senior Secondary School, John Ainley

Dr John Ainley

In previous research, participation in science studies in senior secondary school has been related to both background characteristics of students and to earlier achievements and interests. This paper reports an investigation of participation in combinations of subjects in senior secondary schools in Australia which embody different science orientations. It shows that different combinations of factors shape participation in physical science' and 'biological and other science' types of course. Both are favoured by investigative interest but participation in a physical science course type is strongly associated with high levels of earlier school achievement in numeracy and gender whereas participation in a …

Reflections On The Value Of Vce For Young People Not Intending To Go To University, Jennifer Bryce Dec 1992

Reflections On The Value Of Vce For Young People Not Intending To Go To University, Jennifer Bryce

Dr Jennifer Bryce

This thesis investigates the experiences of eighteen young people who completed the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) in 1991 without intending to proceed to university. It examines their reasons for staying at school to complete VCE and their perceptions of the VCE year and its usefulness to them. This study was prompted by current changes in perceptions of the purpose of post compulsory education shown by government drives for high retention rates in Year 12 and moves for vocationally oriented competency based curricula. Such moves have implied a broader definition of VCE than its traditional role as a means of …

Lexical Development In Bilingual Infants And Toddlers: Comparison To Monolingual Norms, Barbara Zurer Pearson, Sylvia C. Fernandez, D.Kimbrough Oller Dec 1992

Lexical Development In Bilingual Infants And Toddlers: Comparison To Monolingual Norms, Barbara Zurer Pearson, Sylvia C. Fernandez, D.Kimbrough Oller

Barbara Zurer Pearson

This study compares lexical development in a sample of 25 simultaneous bilingual and 35 monolingual children for whom semilongitudinal data were collected between the ages of 8 and 30 months. A standardized parent report form, the MacArthur Communicative Development Inventory (1989), was used to assess the children's receptive and productive vocabulary in English and/or Spanish. A methodology was devised to assess the degree of overlap between the bilingual children's lexical knowledge in one language and their knowledge in the other. Using the measures presented here, there was no statistical basis for concluding that the bilingual children were slower to develop …
