North-South University Research Partnerships In Latin America And The Caribbean, Gus Gregorutti, Nanette Svenson

Gus Gregorutti

Research productivity, alongside teaching and service, is a critical component of university output worldwide and a major determinant in global university rankings. Schools in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) have a weak record in this regard, but certain research programs scattered throughout the region’s universities are producing notable results. A number of these involve North-South partnerships, with one or more institutions from industrialized countries and one or more partner institutions from the LAC region. These endeavorsand the research they conduct and disseminate are the focus of this book. Much of the scholarly work on North-South research to date ...

Ranking & Adv Univ.Pdf, Gus Gregorutti

Gus Gregorutti

Adventist colleges and universities feel great pressure to attract more students in the ever-increasing competitive environment of higher education. As they seek to distinguish themselves through accreditations, awards and success of faculty, a new tool for showing a competitive edge has emerged: rankings. Various news outlets and websites rank US and international universities.
This article reviews these rankings and some of the implications for Adventist colleges and universities. Therefore, two basic questions guide this analysis. First, are rankings really measuring quality? And second, what should be the reaction to these trends to maintain and increase enrollment among Adventist institutions? Responding ...

Las Acreditaciones Y Su Impacto En Universidades Adventistas De Latinoamerica, Gustavo Gregorutti, Caterina Pavon, Nester Ramirez

Gus Gregorutti

Enriching Higher Education Training Through Values And Social Engagement, Gus Gregorutti Dec 2014

Enriching Higher Education Training Through Values And Social Engagement, Gus Gregorutti

Gus Gregorutti

The present study starts describing the relevance of university mission statements and how they have been interacting with the social demands throughout the history of higher education. This way, the recent development of a knowledge economy has strongly impacted universities that look for ways to produce and commercialize ideas (second and third missions). The increasing accreditation agencies and regional and international rankings have helped to reinforce these processes. This trend has created a situation where isomorphic mechanisms are pressing universities to align themselves with models that do not always fit a wide spectrum of them. In addition, this chapter underlines ...

Un Estudio Comparado Del Valor Económico Y Social De Dos Universidades Adventistas, Gus Gregorutti

Gus Gregorutti

This study seeks to understand the key factors that contribute to
the successful continuation of the food industries of two Adventist
universities in Colombia and Peru. These factories have been contributing
socially and economically through employment opportunities
for students from lower social strata. The study gathered data from
a series of interviews with managers of both factories. The results
showed that the success of continuity and contribution is related
to efficient administrative relations between universities and factories
and a culture of innovation that seeks to have the best human
resources to adapt to markets. Respondents also expressed some
concerns for ...

Private Univ In Lta .Pdf, Gus Gregorutti

Gus Gregorutti

Along with teaching and service, research is one of the main missions of a university. Over the last 30 years, innovation resulting from scientific and technological development is prompting the creation of new bridges between the academia and the productive sector. As a result, through research, universities find alternatives to positively impact the society, generate alternative sources of revenue, and gain more prestige. Thus, research productivity has become a more defining characteristic than an option for universities in the twenty-first century. All over the world, state and private universities intensively look for ways to generate new knowledge and technologies that ...

Buscando Modelos Alternativos Para La Gestión Universitaria Latinoamericana, Gus Gregorutti

Gus Gregorutti

Gus Gregorutti

Mejorando La Relación Entre La Universidad Y La Comunidad: El Caso De La Universidad De Montemorelos, Gus Gregorutti, Zeno Charles-Marcel

Gus Gregorutti

The idea of the university in Latin America has been strongly influenced by European
models that were perpetuated since the arrival of the colonizers. As a result, the
university activity was conceived in special places where students learned about
certain topics and then return to the real world. In recent years, there has been a
growing concern in various groups of scholars and public leaders for the relevance
of the impact that universities are having on their communities. This study focuses
on Montemorelos University and its impact on the surrounding communities. This
study also reveals examples of how community involvement ...

Gus Gregorutti

This is a qualitative study done in a private university in the city of Monterrey, Northern Mexico. With a sample of 50 professors, department directors, students, and employees, within communication and journalism programs, this paper sought to unveil perceptions regarding the impact self-assessments and accreditations had on these two programs. Particularly, it was researched whether they believed these processes impacted their quality. Although accreditation was regarded as important, faculty members and employers believed that certified assessments did not produce significant changes over the way teaching and classes are conducted. Students showed high levels of misinformation about benefits and purposes of ...

Alternative Models Of Funding Higher Education: Past And Present Trends, Gus Gregorutti

Gus Gregorutti

The present study is built around the following general research question: why is Adventist higher education in a tight budget? This is approached using a comparative time frame analysis of past and present needs and characteristics affecting funding tertiary education. The main idea throughout this paper is that the different funding systems are setting up models of Adventist higher education that aren’t always the best fit for the institutional ideology and organization. Possible alternatives to shift into a more suitable funding system are provided and discusses as well.

La Universidad Confesional Y Los Nuevos Modelos De Universidades: ¿Es Posible Mantener La Identidad?, Gus Gregorutti

Gus Gregorutti

This study presents the dynamic relationship between the different mission statements
and their impact on university’s models. The excessive promotion of the
production of knowledge, as the central paradigm for higher education, has produced
unbalances in universities. Religious affiliated institutions needs to reposition
themself with their characteristics to offering an education that includes all
three existing missions, but adds a fourth one as a way of enriching training. This
new mission purpose that centers on the development of wisdom, it is not only
useful for religious affiliated universities, but also for all kind of higher education
models. Toward the ...

Producción Intelectual En Pequeñas Universidades Privadas Latinoamericanas: Una Situación Paradójica, Gus Gregorutti

Gus Gregorutti

Gus Gregorutti

The exponential growth of private higher education in Mexico,
especially over the last 30 years, has also raised questions about
the level of quality offered by some of the professional oriented
graduate programs. In order to know how these universities handle
quality, this paper collected opinions from four academic administrators
interviewed in three private universities in the State of
Nuevo Leon, Mexico. Their points of view expressed concerns
around the parameters used by Conacyt to assess quality among
professional oriented graduate programs. The major areas of disagreement
were related to assumptions dealing with the production
of knowledge and the requirements ...

La Producción Intelectual En Las Universidades Privadas Venezolanas, Gus Gregorutti Dec 2008

La Producción Intelectual En Las Universidades Privadas Venezolanas, Gus Gregorutti

Gus Gregorutti

Over the last 30 years, throughout the Latin America region, there has been an increasing
number of private higher education institutions. This trend has brought both some
tensions with the existing and dominant models of tertiary education and, from the other
side, the new governmental demands to allow these new players to be fully recognized
in society. One of these requirements is research productivity as a defining feature for
higher education. Venezuela is not an exception. Governments are asking private
universities to produce knowledge in order to be accredited and recognized within the
national system of universities. However, many of ...
