Many ESL learners exhibit diffidence in situations where they are required to speak in English. They retreat into their shells because of the threat of embarrassment and a loss of face which are consequences of making errors in grammar and pronunciation. One effective method of inducing them to speak is drama. By putting them in imaginary situations and creating make-believe identities, teachers can give them incentives to participate in oral interaction, thereby increasing the quantity of speech produced and providing increased practice in speaking in the target language. Ten non-English-speaking-background students of Bond University were observed to identify the effects of drama on oral English. Over a period of twelve weeks (two hours per week), elements of their oral English communication were measured. The weeks were divided into four lots of three weeks each, with the first three weeks made up entirely of communicative non-drama-based (CNDB) lessons, weeks four to six comprising only communicative drama-based (CDB) methodology, weeks seven to nine reverting to CNDB methodology, and the final three weeks being made up of CDB strategies again. The focus of this paper is on the use of drama in English-language learning. It discusses the writer's use of drama techniques in teaching his language-learners at Bond University, Australia. The writer presents the advantages of drama over traditional teaching methodology and discusses the characteristics of learners and teachers involved in the application of such techniques. Throughout the paper, reference is made to the findings and philosophies of researchers and practitioners associated with the use of drama strategies. It concludes with the suggestion that the relevant authorities should recognise drama as an innovative strategy and consider raising its profile.

This paper will discuss the problems facing overseas-Asian students who study law in Western universities and will deal with how drama can help improve their English-language oral-communication skills. A profile of the average student belonging to a high-context, relational culture will be provided with the aim of showing why such a student needs full-on immersion in oral English. Extract:  When learners start a target language (TL) course, they are normally ".....quite unprepared for the challenge of a foreign language situation, full of self-doubt.." (Dougill 1987: 146). They feel a sense of unease and uncertainty as they wrestle with the new sounds and structures. They find it difficult to convey messages in the same spontaneous fashion that they can in their own languages. As they stutter and stammer in the foreign language (FL), it is natural for them to experience a sense of failure, thus resulting in a loss of confidence.
