Modeling The Writing Assignment On Literature, Charlie Sweet, Hal Blythe Jan 2012

Modeling The Writing Assignment On Literature, Charlie Sweet, Hal Blythe

Hal Blythe

Charlie has been teaching his junior-level American Lit Survey II for 36 years, but last summer after reflecting on the course with Hal, he decided to try a new way of teaching students to write. He set up critical writing communities in his class and then he created one for himself in order to model a particular writing skill.

The Moral Dimension Of Children’S And Adolescents’ Conceptualisation Of Tolerance To Human Diversity, Rivka Witenberg Nov 2007

The Moral Dimension Of Children’S And Adolescents’ Conceptualisation Of Tolerance To Human Diversity, Rivka Witenberg

Rivka T Witenberg Dr

This study examined the kinds of justifications children and adolescents used to support tolerant and intolerant judgements about human diversity. For the tolerant responses, three main belief categories emerged, based on the beliefs that others should be treated fairly (fairness), empathetically (empathy) and that reason/logic ought to govern judgements (reasonableness). Fairness emerged as the most used belief to support tolerant judgements and the most commonly used combination of beliefs was found to be fairness/empathy, linking tolerance to moral reasoning, rules, and values. Specifically noticeable was that 6 to 7 year olds appealed to fairness more often in comparison ...

Assessment For Learning: An Outcomes-Based Approach To Enhance Learning, Ian R. Mcandrew, William Muldoon, Indra R. Sinka

Ian R. McAndrew

This paper draws on two case studies from UK universities to advance debate regarding assessment
strategies and methods in the ERAU Worldwide. It focuses on the use of summative and formative
assessment, the role of feedback, and the importance of learning outcomes for continuous academic
improvement. Findings from the first case study, with three cohorts of graduate students, show that,
where students are encouraged to learn from their mistakes via formative feedback, improvement is
more likely than when standard approaches to assessment are employed. The second case study
identifies one university's approach to changing the design, delivery and assessment ...

Self-Efficacy Of College Intermediate French Students: Relation To Achievement And Motivation, Nicole A. Mills, Frank Pajares, Carol Herron Aug 2007

Self-Efficacy Of College Intermediate French Students: Relation To Achievement And Motivation, Nicole A. Mills, Frank Pajares, Carol Herron

Nicole A Mills

The objective of this investigation was to examine the influence of self-efficacy and other motivational self-beliefs on the achievement of college intermediate French students (N = 303). Self-efficacy for self-regulation was a stronger predictor of intermediate French language achievement than were self-efficacy to obtain grades in French, French anxiety in reading and listening, and French learning self-concept. Students who perceived themselves as capable of using effective metacognitive strategies to monitor their academic work time effectively were more apt to experience academic success in intermediate French. Female students reported greater self-efficacy for self-regulation, interest, value, and enjoyment in learning about both the ...

Torsional Waveguide Density Sensor, Radek Glaser Aug 2007

Torsional Waveguide Density Sensor, Radek Glaser

Radek Glaser

As a part of National Science Foundation-Research for Undergraduates program, a torsional wave guide density sensor has been investigated in the Laboratory of Surface Science and Technology at the University Of Maine. This simple design uses torsional piezo-electric transducers to generate torsional mode in a long circular rod.
The non-circular portion of the wave guide allows for the measurement of different properties of fluids. Theory is presented from energy balance perspective and from the acoustic wave propagation approach. A series of experiments have been conducted with variety of liquids and gases. Several relationships have been verified and also new have ...

Navigating Religious Rights Of Teachers And Students, Samuel J. Smith Aug 2007

Navigating Religious Rights Of Teachers And Students, Samuel J. Smith

Samuel James Smith

Despite the notion that First Amendment rights are established, valued, and respected in the United States, there continues to be confusion in public schools that leads to legal conflict over issues associated with freedoms of speech and expression, especially as they relate to religious issues. Navigating the religious rights of teachers and students can be a precarious undertaking, as administrators’ decisions regarding the expression of religious beliefs continue to be highlighted in the media and many times are resolved in the court system at great expense to school districts. The purpose of this paper is to clarify religious rights issues ...

So You Want To Be A Leaders In Higher Education? Developing Leadership As Women (Professional Development Workshop), Susan R. Madsen

Susan R. Madsen

This insightful and innovative PDW will 1) describe some of the results of a qualitative research study on the leadership development of ten women university presidents, and 2) provide participants with an opportunity to engage in self-analysis and personal reflection. "Leadership" will be broadly framed as leading from a formal position (e.g., president, VP, dean, associate dean, department chair, or committee chair) as well as influencing without an official title or formal authority; therefore, conference attendees interested in influencing change at any level in higher education would benefit.

Faculty And Male Student Athletes In Higher Education: Racial Differences In The Environmental Predictors Of Academic Achievement, Keith Harrison Jun 2007

Faculty And Male Student Athletes In Higher Education: Racial Differences In The Environmental Predictors Of Academic Achievement, Keith Harrison

Dr. C. Keith Harrison

Studies have examined the impact of environmental variables on academic achievement among student athletes in the revenue-generating sports of men’s basketball and football. However, while evidence concerning the positive impact of male student athlete and faculty interaction is virtually unequivocal, we are not certain whether the benefits accruing from particular types of interaction vary across different racial/ethnic groups. This study explores the relationship between male Black and White student athletes and faculty as well as the impact of specific forms of student athlete– faculty interaction on academic achievement. Data are drawn from the Cooperative Institutional Research Program’s ...

A total of 14 theories and models are synthesized in this work, organized in five tables with the same structure: Theories of capital structure; capital budgeting and cost of equity; asset valuation, financial behavior and international finances. Each table contains theories organized alphabetically with an indication of its germinal or current character. The description of the theory is accompanied by current examples of empirical research that updates or contradicts ...

Effects Of Item Positions On Their Difficulty And Discrimination : A Study In Pisa Science Data Across Test Language And Countries, Luc T. Le Jun 2007

Effects Of Item Positions On Their Difficulty And Discrimination : A Study In Pisa Science Data Across Test Language And Countries, Luc T. Le

Dr Luc Tu Le

This study was based on a four-cluster rotation design of 13 linked test booklets from PISA 2006 science data. It investigated effects of item positions on their difficulty and discrimination parameter estimates obtained from one and two parameter IRT Partial Credit models. The analyses were done separately for 57 test language groups from 53 countries with a total of about 340,000 students. The results revealed that for all of the test language groups the items tended to become more difficult when they were located later in the test. However, a high linear relationship between the item difficulty estimates by ...

Can You Hear Me Now? Pilot Study Of Classroom Recording Technologies, Elizabeth C. Scheyder, John Macdermott Jun 2007

Can You Hear Me Now? Pilot Study Of Classroom Recording Technologies, Elizabeth C. Scheyder, John Macdermott

Elizabeth C Scheyder

In recent semesters, we have piloted three low-cost ways to make classroom recordings: - Audio-only automated recording, where just the instructor's voice is captured in a large lecture hall with permanently installed hardware - Audio-only recording using a portable device, where instructor's and students' voices are captured around a seminar table in a small room - Audio recording plus screen-capture using Sympodium hardware, where a movie of screen activity, including PowerPoint, is created with a synchronized audio track of the instructor's voice.
We tracked the costs and labor involved with these technologies, and surveyed instructors and students both before and ...

Another Look At African Cultures Through Picture Books, Dorothy N. Bowen

Dorothy N. Bowen

I realized how difficult it is to describe what life is like for a child growing up in Africa when I was asked to make a presentation to two 6th grade classes. In the course of the presentation, I said, "Africa is not a country:' I had to smile to myself as I saw the shocked look on the face of a little girl sitting right in front of me. Her mouth dropped open and I knew that she thought I had made a very great error.

Plastic Presentation Of Control Data In Context-Awareness Environment, Anas Hariri, Johannes Petersen, Djilali Idoughi, Christophe Kolski

Professor Djilali IDOUGHI

The needs for re-adaptable presentations of supervision information are more necessary in the context-awareness environment whose environmental characteristics change frequently and the control data must be updated regularly into the Graphic User Interface (GUI), in order to provide efficiently to operators an accurate picture of the state of the system being supervised. The re-adaptation of GUI is necessary following each considerable changes in the context of use or in the measured data. We will suggest, in this paper, an approach that allows to generate GUI (in other word plastic GUI) capable to adapt dynamically at runtime to changeable context of ...

An Evaluation Of A Wiki Tutorial On Web Accessibility For Uc Irvine Web Programmers, Eric A. Kowalik Apr 2007

An Evaluation Of A Wiki Tutorial On Web Accessibility For Uc Irvine Web Programmers, Eric A. Kowalik

Eric A. Kowalik

Education is shifting from the real world classroom to a virtual Internet world where learning can occur at any time and any place. The development web sites and virtual learning environments ultimately fall to programmers who create the code, unfortunately many programmers have not been educated about the necessary steps that need to be taken to ensure the web sites they create are accessible to all learners, even those with disabilities. This project includes a review of literature on web accessibility and a collaborative web based training tutorial designed to educate programmers at the University of California, Irvine about web ...
