Got Milk? A Beer's Law Experiment, Gregory A. Dilisi, Lori A. Dilisi, Colleen M. Winters

Gregory A. DiLisi

An experiment for testing the validity of Beer's law by measuring the amount of transmitted light that passes through different samples of milk is described. Milk samples are illuminated using a 5 mW diode laser operating at wavelengths of 660–680 nm, and the transmitted light is detected using a PASCO high-intensity light sensor. A plot of the values of transmitted light intensity against the fat concentration of the milk samples gives a reasonably linear graph for fat concentrations up to about 12 percent, above which Beer's law appears to break down.
