How are collections processed and presented in regards to race and ethnicity? What is not collected and why? Who gets to say what is worth collecting? Operating from three distinct but interlocking perspectives, we will discuss our experiences navigating collection development and collection development policies as a Black woman archivist, a White woman anti-racist public librarian, and a Black woman academic librarian. We will look at the ways in which Black women as collections professionals face invisibility, coded language, and increased mental and emotional labor while operating in a profession that is 85.2% White. Feminism has faced criticism since its inception. However, if you believe in advocacy of women's rights on the basis of the equity, then there should be no concern. Nonetheless, the feminist movement one could make the argument the movement failed women because the narrative benefits only some women. Thus, there is strong need for intersectional feminism calling for more inclusion.  Intersectional feminism no longer have to choose between issues related to sex. The earliest call for this action was Sojourner Truth’s rebuke Ain’t I a Woman. This call for action is even more present as women’s issues are still inequitable. …

The Effect Of A Computing-Focused Linked-Courses Learning Community On Minority And Female Students, Amber Settle, James Doyle, Theresa Steinbach

While enrollments in computing degrees and courses have grown rapidly in the past decade, both female and minority male students remain underrepresented in computing programs. This makes recruitment and retention of these populations a continuing concern. Affinity for a major is connected to student retention, and learning communities have proven effective for this purpose. We present an evaluation of a three-year linked-courses learning community in which we measure pre- to post-quarter changes in student attitudes and resource utilization. We find that participants in the learning community are significantly more likely to report being a part of a group of programmers …

Librarians at LMU conducted information literacy workshops to engage students with meaningful current news outlets and news stories from all political ideologies as a part of a campus-wide teach-in on Inauguration Day 2017. Although the term “social justice” itself is commonly attributed to a 19th century Catholic theologian, the concept of social justice and imperatives to work toward its realization are integral to virtually all religious and spiritual traditions. Religious traditions have historically shaped institutions and power relationships in profound ways and continue to do so alongside the rise of the “nones” (those with no religious affiliation). Moreover, the complex interplay between religious and other cultural, racial, ethnic, lingual, political, and economic forces render a critical social analysis that leaves out religious factors woefully incomplete. During the 2015–16 academic year, over 4000 international students studied at Iowa State University (ISU), representing 11 percent of the overall student population. This presentation will address how international students, the neglected minority, experience daily microaggressions on campus. We will further analyze how these experiences may impact their overall satisfaction of the university. Further, we will conclude with implications and suggestions on how to promote cultural awareness and inclusiveness for international students.

In this program, the authors will address the considerations, challenges, and opportunities inherent in scaling information literacy instruction including threshold concepts to a large-scale program, specifically within a university setting but transferrable to multiple contexts. The speakers will address the flipped approach for library instruction in a First-Year Writing program as well as their expanded role in developing a new curriculum for the program. Throughout both processes, incorporating the threshold concepts of the ACRL Framework was a priority. What is vicarious trauma?  Vicarious trauma is a response to the continued exposure to secondary traumatic content (Figely, 2002). The difference between burnout or compassion fatigue is they can be addressed with time off or rest; however, vicarious trauma needs to be handled through coping skills and stress management.  If not addressed, vicarious trauma can have adverse impacts to a person’s cognition, self-perception, and empathetic engagement (McCann & Pearlman, 1990). Additionally, vicarious negatively impacts job satisfaction. The results of the study found for every increase in vicarious trauma, there was a decrease in job satisfaction.
