Despite a rebound in enrollments, men of color and women remain underrepresented in computing. The literature indicates that student-student interaction and affinity for the computing major are important factors for retention of underrepresented groups in computing, and learning communities connect students with each other and faculty to improve collaboration, interaction, enthusiasm. Despite their long history and promise for addressing retention, computing-focused learning communities remain rare. Here we present an evaluation of a linked-courses learning community for men of color and women majoring in a development-focused area of computing. In this panel session, the relationship between computer science programs and information technology programs at universities that house both will be explored. People outside the computing disciplines often find the distinction between these programs confusing. The panelists, who have experience with both types of program, will discuss strategies for differentiating the programs in the eyes of administrators, for advising students into the correct program, and for maintaining focus and excellence in both computer science and information technology programs.

Incorporated into the session will be best practices in tutorial creation.

According to the National Center for Education Statistics, a student drops out of school every nine seconds, with Latino and African American students being disproportionately represented. A survey-based study conducted with a diverse group of college students regarding experiences with their former high school counselor revealed evidence-based interventions that could be implemented with Latino and African American students to promote college attainment. This session will provide you with the knowledge to address impediments that Latino and African American students encounter and how to promote college access. Discussion and sharing information about various school counselor practices will be encouraged.

Previous work has shown that factors such as student engagement and involvement can impact progress for computer science majors. One promising approach for improving student engagement is learning communities, which have a long history in academia but are relatively uncommon in computing. In this article we describe a linked-courses learning community for women and men of color majoring in development-focused computing degrees. We provide logistical information about the first offering of the learning community and assess the effectiveness of the community via a student survey. What if libraries across Oregon shared a repository of how-to instructional videos and tutorials? What if patron questions like, “How do I download an eBook?” could be answered by a slick two-minute video that any library using the same eBook platform could embed at the point-of-need? With an eye towards design thinking, performance support, instructional design, creative collaboration, and technology wrangling, these are the questions that we’ll address in this active discussion. Together, we’ll envision what instructional content could best be shared among Oregon libraries and how point-of-need resources could support library patrons at all different types of libraries.

This session focuses on digital collections at the University of Dayton Libraries and how it has evolved from using a stand-alone digital asset management system (CONTENTdm) to a flexible, robust, open-access institutional repository solution hosted by Berkley Electronic Press (Bepress). We share our trials and errors from our first digitization initiatives that began in 2006, to the launch of our first digital collection using CONTENTdm in 2010, to the implementation of our IR, eCommons, in 2013. Student success in an introductory programing course is crucial, both because it influences retention and because student attitudes and habits in a first course can have a lasting impact on student success in computer science as a field. In this paper we present results about student attitudes and habits before and after a CS1 class. Statistically significant attitude differences were found in three areas: students were less likely to report they were good at programming, more likely to agree they are challenged by programming problems they can't understand immediately, and are less likely to report that computer science allows them …

This presentation on The Corporate Shell Game identifies for the first time the hardening of the corporate shell. It provides compelling evidence that shell-hardening pushes and disguises the way that corporations and agents commit large-scale wrongdoing, and it traces the contributing legal streams that protect the agents who engage in this behavior. The only way to combat widespread frauds that inflict damage on the public is for the corporate shell to become less opaque.
