The Influence Of Human Support On The Effectiveness Of A Web And Mobile App-Based Multimodal Lifestyle Intervention Targeting Mental Health: A Randomised Comparative Study, Mel Renfrew, Darren Morton, Jason K. Morton, Jason Hinze, Peter Beamish, Geraldine Przybylko

Darren Morton

Introduction: There is a need for efficacious lifestyle interventions that promote the mental health and emotional wellness of both healthy and clinical cohorts. Evidence regarding the usefulness of adding human support (i.e. guidance) to improve the outcomes of web- and mobile app-based psychological interventions for clinical populations is mixed,1-3 however little is known about healthy cohorts.

Methods: 458 self-selected participants registered to join a 10-week, web- and mobile app-based, multimodal lifestyle intervention. The participants were randomised into three groups, differentiated by support mode: standard, who received automated emails only (S); standard plus personalised SMS messages (S+pSMS); standard ...

Openness To A Paradigm Shift In Medical Education Assessment – A Case Study, Elina Tor

Elina Tor

Background – In 2017 the School of Medicine Fremantle (SoMF) began moving towards a paradigm shift to optimise the learning and decision functions of assessments.
Methods – Consistent with best practice of first doing, then watching and thinking, a multi-year (2017 – 2020) action research project has been in place alongside the staged roll-out of programmatic assessment for learning (PA) framework in the SoMF since 2017. The aim of the action research is to authentically construct theories of action to account for ongoing reflection on experience.  The focus of this presentation is to use the SoMF context to further understanding of the nature ...

Using Institutional Repositories To Promote Scholarly Development And Undergraduate Research, Mary George, Kayla Siddell Mar 2019

Using Institutional Repositories To Promote Scholarly Development And Undergraduate Research, Mary George, Kayla Siddell

Mary George

Employers have long been discouraged by the number of undergraduate students graduating without being adequately prepared to achieve their professional goals such as a career or graduate school.  Hands-on experiences along with research and scholarship opportunities contribute to scholarly development and can increase an undergraduate student’s career options and will better prepare them for graduate school. Many students struggle with scholarly development, viewing their work as homework rather than scholarship and often do not view themselves as scholars. Providing preservation and access of undergraduate work in an institutional repositories can help to alleviate these problem by archiving and promoting ...

Scorm Modules For Il Instruction And Assessment, Eric A. Kowalik Mar 2019

Scorm Modules For Il Instruction And Assessment, Eric A. Kowalik

Eric A. Kowalik

Rapid e-learning programs such as Articulate Storyline make it possible to develop highly interactive sharable content object reference model (SCORM) packages without advanced programming knowledge. These SCORM packages can be loaded into most learning management systems (LMS) and allow librarians to better gauge students' information literacy competency and create flipped instruction opportunities to allow for better use of valuable in-class time. Learn about the development, implementation, and evaluation of these SCORM packages, then join us in helping to improve them by downloading the open source packages from the project GitHub site - http://marquetterml.github.io/information-literacy-modules/.

Educators are amongst a population at risk for exposure to secondary trauma because they have contact with young adults who may have or currently experiencing hardships such as mental health issues, relationship abuse, or financial insecurity. However, despite the vulnerability of educators to secondary trauma, little research has focused on this population or preventative techniques that might mitigate the effects of secondary trauma to educators. A faculty cohort was selected to identify levels of exposure and coping strategies used to navigate classroom and one and one interactions with students. In this presentation participants the results from this semester long faculty ...

Academic Libraries And Autism Spectrum Disorder (Asd): How Do We Help?, Gerard Shea, Sebastian Derry Dec 2018

Academic Libraries And Autism Spectrum Disorder (Asd): How Do We Help?, Gerard Shea, Sebastian Derry

Gerard Shea

Current research indicates 1 in 59 children in the United States has Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). As a result of the increased prevalence of ASD, a larger number of higher functioning ASD students are now participating in higher education. This potentially disruptive trend could impact academic libraries. The service values of librarianship require creating inclusive and accessible environments for college students with ASD. We will examine how the American with Disabilities Act concerns academic libraries regarding providing access and services to students with ASD. Attendees will learn how outreach initiatives by academic libraries can help ASD students succeed in college.

Engaging Undergraduate Students In Planetary Science Research For Parabolic Flights, Gillian Gomer, Adrienne Dove, Seamus Anderson, Jeffery Jorges, Alexandra Yates

Gillian Gomer

Microgravity investigations are key to understanding the behavior or regolith, or dusty granular material, that is ubiquitous on planetary surfaces. We see features on other planets that resemble avalanches and landslides seen here on Earth, while eroded craters and so-called ponds (smooth level dusty deposits at the bottom of some craters) reveal the action of various regolith flow mechanisms. The SLOPEs experiment was designed by an undergraduate group to address questions on the statics and dynamics of granular matter on the surfaces of small Solar System bodies, including a) the flow behavior of granular material along slopes (landslides and avalanches ...

Infographics And Visual Literacy: Teaching Evaluative Criteria To Increase Critical Thinking, Dana S. Thompson Jun 2018

Infographics And Visual Literacy: Teaching Evaluative Criteria To Increase Critical Thinking, Dana S. Thompson

Dana Statton Thompson

Infographics, as one type of visual information, are becoming more and more prevalent online, especially on social media sites. Because of the prolific nature of these sites, and the fact that 86% of 18-29 year olds use at least one social media site (Pew Research Center, 2017), it’s important to know how well college students understand infographics. Exploring the findings of a pre- and post-questionnaire given to two journalism classes found that students do not independently evaluate infographics. However, by utilizing best practices when creating an infographic assignment, it is possible to teach students how to think critically about ...

How Early Learning Interventions Respond To Diverse International Contexts: A Scoping Review, Jen Jackson, Kashfee Ahmed, Toby Carslake

Toby Carslake

As the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) generate increasing interest in quality early childhood interventions, a challenge remains in identifying which programs achieve outcomes for children in diverse international contexts. This paper focuses on programs to support children's learning: one of the three components of holistic child development identified in the SDGs. The paper presents findings from a scoping review of recent research on interventions to support children's learning in economically developing countries. Building on Rao, Sun, Chen and Ip's 2017 systematic review of the effectiveness of such interventions, it explores in greater detail what can be ...
