As a variation on game-based learning, we propose the concept of 'gameful learning' as a framework that encourages improvisation, playfulness, and social interaction, and which takes into account the unique contingencies of individual people and specific content. We describe gameful learning in terms of three elements: attitude, identity, and ignorance. Three cases of gameful learning are examined across diverse learning environments: a fourth grade science class studying matter, a secondary world history class studying the Middle Ages, and an educational technology graduate programme. Instructional technology plays a key role in many teaching reform efforts at the postsecondary level, yet evidence suggests that faculty adopt these technology-based innovations in a slow and inconsistent fashion. A key to improving these efforts is to understand local practice and use these insights to design more locally attuned interventions. This paper reports a study designed to increase the moral reasoning and multicultural competence of White students in a counselling internship. An intervention was conducted to determine the effectiveness of using a deliberate psychological education (DPE) approach that incorporated issues of cultural competence, oppression and diversity. This study attempted to discern if the DPE model could make a difference in the promotion of moral reasoning and multicultural competence of counsellor interns. This research involved an exploratory intervention to determine the effectiveness of using a deliberate psychological education (DPE) approach that incorporated issues of ethics, multicultural competence, oppression and diversity. This study reflects a national survey of 295 CACREP counselor educators regarding their understanding of and support for the 2009 CACREP standards revision. It also assessed respondents' opinions about the proposed number of program credits (48, 60, other) and internship hours (600, 900, other) based upon whether the community counseling and mental health counseling specialty tracks merge or remain separate. Results indicate a difference in opinions about the curricular changes that reflects a historic and continuing tension around counselor identity issues.

Professional school counselors must increasingly be prepared to work in more racially and ethnically diverse school settings. At the same time, most school counselor trainees continue to be from the dominant culture, raising the likelihood of culture clashes and ethical violations. This article describes the use of a computer version of a measure of ethical sensitivity to racial and gender intolerance, the Racial Ethical Sensitivity Test-Compact Disk (REST-CD; Sirin, Brabeck, Satiani, & Rogers-Serin, 2003) with school counselor interns. In this program evaluation article, the authors describe a model of new student orientation that focuses on inviting master's-level counseling students to embrace difference, especially regarding sexual orientation and gender identity/expression. A growing population of Hispanic immigrants to the United States means that helping professionals need to gain knowledge about specific issues affecting these groups. Stresses related to the immigration experience and minority status can influence the use of alcohol and illegal substances by Hispanic adolescents. Because the family is considered the preferred unit of treatment for this population, studies addressing approaches to engagement and treatment are reviewed, and two promising models are highlighted: the strategic structural systems engagement approach and the brief strategic family therapy model.

With the sharp rise in students who are English language learners (ELL), research on identifying and serving the needs of gifted and talented (GT) ELL students offers fertile ground for best practice guidelines. The current study describes GT/ELL identification practices based on an in-depth case study of one diverse school district in the Midwest. School personnel, parents, and students participated in separate semistructured group interviews about their experiences regarding GT/ELL identification. Growing concerns with suboptimal effort in pediatric populations have led clinicians to investigate the utility of symptom validity tests (SVT) among children and adolescents. Performance on the Test of Memory Malingering (TOMM) was analyzed among a clinical sample of individuals ranging in age from 5 through 16 years. The 101 patients were referred for a variety of learning, developmental, psychiatric, and neurological concerns. All children were administered the TOMM as part of a clinical neuropsychological evaluation. Within the sample, 4 patients did not meet the adult cutoff criteria for passing the TOMM. This mixed methods study focused on adolescents who rejected conventional singular racial/ethnic categorization by selecting multiple race/ethnicities or writing descriptions of “Other” racial/ethnic identities in response to a survey item asking them to identify their race/ethnicity. Written responses reflected eight distinct categories ranging from elaborative descriptions of conventional race categories to responses refusing the construct of race/ethnicity. Students’ endorsement of multiple or “Other” ethnicities, and the resultant categories, differed by gender, grade, school type, and school compositions. Findings support scholars’ concern that common conceptualizations of race may not capture the complexity of self-identified racial categories among youth.

The goal of this mixed-methods study was to explore the effect of gender on teachers' willingness to refer students to a gifted and talented program. Teachers (N = 28) were provided with one of two profiles (i.e., female or male) describing a gifted student. Results indicated that teachers' decisions for referral to gifted programs were significantly influenced by the student's gender; teachers were much less willing to refer a female student than an identically described male student to gifted programs. While clear guidelines and best practices exist for the assessment of autism spectrum disorders (ASD), little information is available about assessing for ASD in culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) populations. CLD populations might be misidentified and under-identified with ASD due to the assessment practices that we employ. Four autism diagnostic tools and six autism screeners were selected and evaluated for their cultural and linguistic responsiveness. Although the evaluation of ASD within CLD populations is highly complex, this study identified the need for improved autism assessment tools and practices.
