Management educators today face the continuing challenge of designing courses so that optimal transfer of learning occurs between the classroom and workplace. Researchers (e.g., Knowles, Holton, & Swanson, 1998; Merriam & Caffarella, 1999) have agreed that many adult learners do not effectively remember and transfer learning when taught by traditional teaching and learning pedagogies (e.g., lecture). Service-learning is a relatively new pedagogy which uses service activities to support traditional teaching methods, giving students a better understanding and ability to remember and carry out functions/skills taught in class. Although its use in an HRD course has rarely been reported in the literature, the teaching methods appear to be ideal for instilling in students the skills and/or traits necessary to be successful in HRD (e.g., intellectual versatility, adult learning insight, and industry understanding).

Academic service-learning is a relatively new pedagogy that uses service activities to support traditional teaching methods, giving students a better understanding and ability to remember and carry out functions/skills taught in class. Although its use in human resource development courses has rarely been reported in the literature, preliminary research appears to suggest that academic service-learning would be an ideal teaching method for instilling in students the skills and/or traits necessary to be successful in human resource development (e.g., intellectual versatility, adult learning insight, and industry understanding).
