Essay Writing Instructional Lexicon And Semantic Confusion, Amir Kalan Nov 2017

Essay Writing Instructional Lexicon And Semantic Confusion, Amir Kalan

Amir Kalan

“Introduction,” “body,” and “conclusion” are the most accessible words in the instructional lexicon for ESL writing teachers when they want to describe the structure of a typical five-paragraph persuasive or argumentative essay or its shorter variations for standardized tests such as TOEFL and IELTS. They are frequently employed to refer to the three tiers of the hamburger essay in textbooks, on classroom boards, and in YouTube tutorials.

Not surprisingly, English learners also might give you the same words if asked what the main components of an essay are. Like ESL teachers, students usually use the same terms or their equivalents …

Familiar Strangers: International Students In The U.S. Composition Course, Elena Lawrick, Fatima Esseili

Fatima Esseili

This chapter presents selected findings from our study of a well-established ESL writing program at a U.S. university with a large population of international undergraduate students. The study was conducted in all 13 writing sections. The instruments included demographic data from university registrars; one instructor survey, administered at the end of the semester; and two student surveys, one administered at the beginning of the semester and one at the end. The instructor survey response rate was 100% (13 teachers); the student survey response rates were 82.5% (161 students) and 88% (171 students), respectively.

The reported findings inform five areas: an …

School Aged Children : Visual Perception And Reversal Recognition Of Letters And Numbers Separately And In Context, Janet E. Richmond

Janet E Richmond PhD

Visual discrimination, spatial orientation, and recognition of letters and numbers in context are important issues in helping young students achieve good literacy and numeracy standards. Thus, measures of Visual Discrimination of Upper Case Letters (VDUCL), Visual Discrimination of Lower Case Letters (VDLCL), and Visual Discrimination of Numbers (VDN) as well as Spatial Orientation of Letter and Number Pairs (SOLNP), Form Constancy of Letters and Numbers (FCLNP), Letter and Number Sequencing (LNS), Figure Ground of Letters in Words FGLW) and Figure Ground Numbers in Calculations (FGNC) must be linear and uni-dimensional so that student weaknesses can be identified objectively. The Simple …

Electronic Journals, Prestige, And The Economics Of Academic Journal Publishing, Steven Tötösy De Zepetnek, Joshua Jia Mar 2014

Electronic Journals, Prestige, And The Economics Of Academic Journal Publishing, Steven Tötösy De Zepetnek, Joshua Jia

Tötösy de Zepetnek, Steven & Totosy de Zepetnek, Steven

In their article "Electronic Journals, Prestige, and the Economics of Academic Journal Publishing" Steven Tötösy de Zepetnek and Joshua Jia discuss the current state of the academic journal publishing industry. The current state of the industry is an oligopoly based on a double appropriation model where academics produce work for at no cost only to have publishers earn significant profit margins by selling the work back to academics. Publishers are able to do this given the price inelasticity and weak bargaining power of its main consumer, university libraries. Publishers' ability to increase prices is also supported by what the authors …

In his article "Nádas's A Book of Memories and Central European Journeys" Steven Tötösy de Zepetnek discusses theoretical, literary, political, social, etc., aspects of travel in Péter Nádas's novel. "Travel" in the novel represents both a conceptual and lived experience at a time when travel between the East and the West in Europe was restricted and when a person hailing from the "East" considered a journey to the West a complex and ideological matter. Further, the aspect of urbanity, that is, cultural and social spaces and the journey and what such entails in terms of ideology, points of origin, knowledge, …

Mothering And Literacies, Amanda Richey, Linda Evans Dec 2013

Mothering And Literacies, Amanda Richey, Linda Evans

Linda S. Evans

This collection explores the connections between mothering/motherhood and literacy as it is broadly defined. Literacy, in this case, encompasses reading/writing literacy as well as multimodal, new or digital, and contested multiliteracies that are socioculturally situated and contextually defined. Mothers are often the object of cultural and popular discourses on family literacy, as well as targets in international campaigns to increase literacy learning. There has been little scholarly attention paid to how mothers in diverse sociocultural contexts do literacy, or how literacies have been mediated or challenged by mothers and motherhood. By critically examining the connections between mothers and literacies, this …

Gains In Reading Comprehension And Attitudes Toward Reading Among Gifted And General Education Students In Title I Schools, Elizabeth Shaunessy-Dedrick, Linda Evans, Susan Homan, John Ferron, Myriam Lindo, Chunhua Cao, Eun Kyeng Baek

Linda S. Evans

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effects of a differentiated reading approach, the Schoolwide Enrichment Model-Reading (SEM-R) on reading comprehension and attitudes toward reading with heterogeneously-grouped grade four classes in urban Title I schools. The analyses were carried out in a multilevel modeling framework, so that the nesting of the students within schools could be taken into account. Findings indicate statistically different positive effects on both reading comprehension as assessed on the Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS) and attitudes toward reading as measured by the Elementary Reading Attitude Survey (ERAS). Implications for research with Title I …

Creative Activities For Teaching Language, Stephen A. Sadow Aug 2010

Creative Activities For Teaching Language, Stephen A. Sadow

Stephen Sadow

Creative Activities for Language Learning energizes students to think and to use language in new ways. By injecting humor whenever possible, motivation grows and develops. Used regularly, the group, pair, and single-person activities found here allows students to communicate on a vast array of subjects and try on an endless series of linguistic strategies. They combine the serious tasks with fanciful and creative thinking, self-disclosure and out-right silliness. The activities are also highly teacher-friendly. The groups are chosen, the topic explained, and the students converse until obliged to stop. Students talk, write and think creatively, all at the same time.

Building Target Language Oral Skills Through Drama, Chamkaur Gill Dec 1994

Building Target Language Oral Skills Through Drama, Chamkaur Gill

Chamkaur Gill

Extract:  When learners start a target language (TL) course, they are normally ".....quite unprepared for the challenge of a foreign language situation, full of self-doubt.." (Dougill 1987: 146). They feel a sense of unease and uncertainty as they wrestle with the new sounds and structures. They find it difficult to convey messages in the same spontaneous fashion that they can in their own languages. As they stutter and stammer in the foreign language (FL), it is natural for them to experience a sense of failure, thus resulting in a loss of confidence.
