At the University of the Pacific, we are using the SAILS (Standardized Assessment of Information Literacy Skills) Test to assess undergraduate students’ information literacy skills and to see how they have changed over time. Rapid e-learning programs such as Articulate Storyline make it possible to develop highly interactive sharable content object reference model (SCORM) packages without advanced programming knowledge. These SCORM packages can be loaded into most learning management systems (LMS) and allow librarians to better gauge students' information literacy competency and create flipped instruction opportunities to allow for better use of valuable in-class time. At the end of each semester, composition instructors at the University of Dayton (UD) collected portfolios of student writing for the annual program assessment, encouraging their students to return the following semester to pick up their folders of work. Despite the proliferation of residency programs, institutes, and scholar- ships designed to increase the numbers of African American and other academic librarians of color, academic librarianship, in contrast to the American population, continues to lacks racial diversity. According to the American Library Association’s most recent Diversity Counts report, credentialed academic librarians are 86.1% white. African Americans make up 12.6% of the American population, but only account for 5.4% of credentialed academic librarians.

The Humboldt State University Library decided to redesign library instruction and programming; we hoped to make our offerings more scalable and engaging for our students. To that end, we cultivated campus partnerships and designed a workshop program to motivate students to participate in co-curricular learning. Implementing a successful drop-in workshop program is challenging; many librarians have experience with poorly attended drop-in workshops, inadequate campus support, and insufficient student interest. Experiences Of Academic Librarians Serving As Interim Library Leaders, Kathy M. Irwin, Susann Devries

Using a mixed-methods approach, the researchers explored the experiences of 108 academic librarians who served as interim library leaders at U.S. institutions of higher education between 2012 and 2017. Statistical analysis showed no associations between gender, type of institution, or degree-granting level with the duration of interim service or whether a respondent applied for or was hired as the permanent leader. The authors provide recommendations for future interim library leaders and the university executives who appoint them. Serving as an interim library leader can be a once-in-a lifetime opportunity well worth the experience.

Current research indicates 1 in 59 children in the United States has Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). As a result of the increased prevalence of ASD, a larger number of higher functioning ASD students are now participating in higher education. This potentially disruptive trend could impact academic libraries. The service values of librarianship require creating inclusive and accessible environments for college students with ASD. We will examine how the American with Disabilities Act concerns academic libraries regarding providing access and services to students with ASD. UNO’s Chancellor’s Commission for the Status of Women (CCSW) has been at the forefront of inclusion of all genders since the 1970’s. Recently, CCSW has extensively re-evaluated UNO’s campus climate and has submitted an action plan to the Chancellor to improve the status of women students, faculty, and staff. This presentation will focus on CCSW’s renewed and energetic efforts in the last several years to make UNO more gender-inclusive in our physical spaces, work environments, leadership roles, and campus policies.
